Background
Orochimaru was Hiruzen Sarutobi’s disciple and originally cared about Konoha and his comrades. Witnessing Nawaki’s and Dan Katō’s deaths left him uncertain about his future. Later, watching Itachi’s exceptional talent deepened his dissatisfaction with the limits of ordinary effort and helped drive his obsession with bloodlines and secret techniques 235 243.
He fought alongside Jiraiya and Tsunade against Hanzō during the Second Shinobi World War. During his Konoha career, he completed 108 S-rank missions and 491 A-rank missions, establishing an extensive record before becoming a rogue ninja 95 152.
Personality
Orochimaru’s central ambitions are eternal life and mastery of every Ninjutsu. He regards a normal lifespan as insufficient to investigate the world’s mysteries and treats the human body as the key to understanding power 134 177.
His curiosity is inseparable from cruelty. He manipulates vulnerable people into serving him, experiments on captive subjects, and covets powerful bodies as replacements for his own. Kabuto’s recruitment and his attempts to possess Itachi and Sasuke illustrate this willingness to reduce people to useful resources 90 134 150 242.
Despite his appetite for discovery, he is patient and cautious. He protects his bases with traps, prepares escape routes and replacement vessels, and retreats when an opponent reveals an unfavorable counter. After his hands are sealed, Kabuto notices that he becomes markedly more conservative 90 150 207 243.
His rejection of Konoha remains contradictory. Although he attacks the village and speaks of severing old bonds, he later fights alongside the Sannin and summons the former Hokage during Konoha’s destruction 187 224 226 235.
Appearance
- Snake-like eyes and mannerisms: His eyes remain recognizable even after changing bodies. He frequently extends his tongue and licks his lips when intrigued or excited 94 153 182.
- Variable body: Living Corpse Reincarnation changes his physical appearance. One replacement vessel differs in height and hairstyle and initially has its face wrapped in bandages, exposing only the right eye 153.
- Serpentine transformations: He can elongate his neck, replace his legs with a snake’s body, and transform into an enormous eight-headed serpent 91 242 243.
Abilities & Skills
Snake Ninjutsu
- Hidden Shadow Snake Hands / Multiple Hidden Shadow Snake Hands: Sends snakes from his arm or sleeve to attack, restrain, or capture targets 91 128 150 242.
- Formation of Ten Thousand Snakes: Produces a rapidly multiplying mass of venomous snakes. Against Sasuke, the snakes also attack with Kusanagi Swords from their mouths 94 243.
- Giant snake summoning: Calls a massive python capable of destroying numerous human puppets with a tail sweep 94.
- Biological detection: Uses snakes to locate concealed people through senses beyond Chakra detection, exposing Aoki Tsuki’s surveillance 91.
Snake-Style Substitution and Cellular Control
- Body shedding: Escapes a damaged body by emerging from its mouth in a new one. The technique requires no hand seals if activated promptly 94 243.
- Reconnection and flexibility: Rejoins a body severed at the waist and stretches his neck to attack at unexpected angles 91.
- Survival applications: Uses substitution to escape fire, impalement, Obito’s absorption attempt, and the black flames protecting Sasuke 99 127 226 243.
- Underlying research: Controls cells by connecting Chakra with physical energy; his methods extend beyond simply reproducing Jūgo’s natural abilities 182.
Living Corpse Reincarnation
- Body transfer: Continues his existence by occupying another body, treating it as a vessel 153 154.
- Growth potential: Claims that a sufficiently perfect vessel can increase his strength 153.
- Mental cost: Vessel transfers deplete mental energy, reducing his ability to maintain peak combat strength and resist Genjutsu 167.
- Soul damage remains a limitation: Even after changing bodies, he must separately resolve the damage caused by the Reaper Death Seal 207 235.
Elemental Ninjutsu and Defensive Summoning
| Technique / Skill | Demonstrated use |
|---|---|
| Wind Release: Great Breakthrough | Disperses Aoki Tsuki’s Imperial Lightning Snake and helps break enemy defenses 91 100. |
| Water Release: Water Dragon Bullet Technique | Counters a combined enemy assault involving Fire Release 100. |
| Earth Release | Approaches targets underground, hides beneath the battlefield, and escapes through the earth 91 243. |
| Wood Release | Restrains Pain with vines and attacks Sasuke’s Susanoo with Thorn Prison Technique 226 243. |
| Rashomon / Triple Rashomon | Summons demonic gates as barriers against powerful attacks 91 243. |
| Chakra-nature mastery | Is explicitly described as having mastered all Chakra natures during his battle with Sasuke 243. |
Swordsmanship
- Matches Aoki Tsuki in close combat, with his experience initially giving him an advantage against Tsuki’s conventional techniques 91.
- Uses the Kusanagi Sword at close range and extends it over long distances for surprise attacks 91 94.
- Conceals Kusanagi inside the Eight-Headed Serpent’s tail to intercept Sasuke’s Totsuka Blade 243.
Impure World Reincarnation
- Reanimation: Summons deceased shinobi to fight, including the Third Kazekage and the first four Hokage 181 235.
- Early control weakness: The reanimated Third Kazekage breaks free through his own will, prompting Orochimaru to acknowledge that the technique needs refinement 181.
- Strategic use: Reanimates the former Hokage after releasing souls from the Shinigami, bringing major reinforcements into the battle for Konoha 235.
Eight Branches Technique
- An S-rank Kinjutsu and Orochimaru’s strongest trump card, transforming him into a colossal white serpent with eight heads 243.
- Regenerates destroyed heads faster than Sasuke can eliminate them with successive Susanoo arrows 243.
- Uses corrosive venom to damage Susanoo and coils around it to crush it 243.
- Cannot regenerate heads sealed by the Totsuka Blade, forcing Orochimaru to abandon the fight 243.
Research, Intelligence, and Senjutsu
- Cell and bloodline research: Studies Jūgo, Kimimaro’s Shikotsumyaku, Cursed Seals, and White Zetsu’s unusual cellular composition 147 167 182.
- White Zetsu cultivation: Develops a stock of clones for experimentation and prepares a clone as a replacement vessel 215 235.
- Mental training: Acquires and masters Aoki Tsuki’s Secret Mind Technique 182 207.
- Senjutsu limitation: Passes Ryūchi Cave’s trial but refuses the White Snake Sage’s Chakra injection because of its risks. He instead pursues Jūgo’s abilities and develops the Cursed Seal; he still cannot master Senjutsu by the time Akatsuki has gathered seven Tailed Beasts 167 207.
- Intelligence network: Maintains his own sources and uses Kabuto’s infiltration of Konoha to acquire sensitive Anbu operational plans 91 134.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Kusanagi Sword — A weapon Orochimaru calls a divine sword; he stores it inside his body and uses its extended reach for surprise attacks 91 94.
- “Vacant” / “Void” ring — His Akatsuki ring. After Itachi cuts off his left arm, he preserves the severed hand with the ring still on its little finger as a reminder of his humiliation 94 153.
- Akatsuki cloak — A black cloak patterned with red clouds, supplied by Konan upon his admission 94.
- Shinigami mask — Obtained from the Uzumaki Clan Mask Storage Temple and used to release the sealed souls, including the portions belonging to his arms 235.
- Research scrolls and trapped archives — Places desirable material on sealing, summoning, and forbidden techniques in his bases to tempt intruders into traps 90.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Establishing Otogakure and Joining Akatsuki
Overburdened by research and outside assignments, Orochimaru recruits Kabuto through manipulation and gives him a base in the Land of Earth. He also reaches an agreement with the Land of Rice Fields’ daimyō and secretly establishes Otogakure, gathering subordinates to support his work 89 90.
After discovering that Aoki Tsuki has monitored him for half a year, he confronts and fights Tsuki, then asks him to convey a request to join Akatsuki. While they are occupied, Obito and Zetsu search and burn his laboratory; Orochimaru mistakenly holds Tsuki responsible 90 91.
Pain tests him through a battle with Sasori. Orochimaru survives Sasori’s attacks and attempts to seize Pain’s Rinnegan, only to be repelled. He is nevertheless admitted, receives his ring and cloak, and is assigned to Sasori despite both men objecting 94.
Partnership with Sasori and Research Exchanges
His partnership with Sasori combines effective battlefield coordination with deep mutual distrust. During an assassination mission, Shisui pursues Orochimaru into Sasori’s fight against Sunagakure’s Anti-Puppet Squad. Sasori suspects Orochimaru of arranging his predicament, though the supplied account does not establish that accusation as fact 98 99 100.
Orochimaru becomes an important source of intelligence and forbidden knowledge for Aoki Tsuki. He supplies Kabuto’s stolen Anbu plans when Konoha threatens Akatsuki’s network, then trades Impure World Reincarnation for a White Zetsu Clone 134 139.
Itachi’s Rejection and Defection
Having made his reincarnation technique usable, Orochimaru deduces that Akatsuki intends to acquire the Tailed Beasts and prepares to leave. Before departing, he tries to obtain Itachi’s body. Itachi traps him in Genjutsu and severs his left arm; Kabuto intervenes to secure their escape 147 150.
Akatsuki subsequently announces his defection. Pain postpones pursuit because capturing him would demand substantial resources, while Sasori remains eager for revenge. Orochimaru changes vessels and continues dealing privately with Tsuki 152 153 154.
Attack on Konoha
Orochimaru arranges a joint attack with Sunagakure and invites Tsuki to participate personally. Their preparations also produce another exchange: Orochimaru supplies cell-control technology in return for a Secret Mind Technique, with both deliberately withholding later or more complete material 177 182.
During the Chunin Exams, he turns his attention from Itachi to Sasuke as a prospective vessel. The attack leaves Orochimaru’s hands disabled by the Third Hokage’s sealing technique. He seeks Tsunade’s help and prepares a cultivated Zetsu body as another option 185 187 188.
Akatsuki’s War and the Return of the Hokage
While training Sasuke, Orochimaru waits to see what Akatsuki’s collection of the Tailed Beasts will produce. He initially tells Tsuki that he has no interest in intervening in the coming war 195 207 215.
He nevertheless appears in Konoha and joins Jiraiya and Tsunade against Pain, insisting that his interest lies in the Rinnegan. Their cooperation fails to overcome the Six Paths, and Pain sends him flying with Shinra Tensei 224 226.
As the Ten-Tails devastates the battlefield, Orochimaru restores his sealed arm power, enters a White Zetsu vessel, and reanimates the first four Hokage. Their arrival interrupts another Tailed Beast Bomb attack 235.
Final Attempt to Possess Sasuke
After Sasuke’s battle and Mangekyō awakening, Orochimaru attacks while he is exhausted. He survives Itachi’s protective black flames and nearly overwhelms Sasuke with the Eight Branches Technique. The Totsuka Blade seals the serpent’s heads, however, forcing him to escape underground 242 243.
He survives the conflict and later discusses peace and time with Tsuki as Akatsuki disbands and Tsuki prepares to return to Amegakure 252.
Relationships
- Kabuto — Assistant, spy, and research collaborator. Initially manipulated into service, he later shares Orochimaru’s ambitions closely enough that their relationship is described as a partnership. Orochimaru’s declining strength eventually prompts him to consider independent safeguards 90 134 150 207.
- Aoki Tsuki — Former observer, occasional opponent, and recurring trading partner. Their cooperation rests on useful exchanges rather than complete trust 91 139 167 182.
- Sasori — Unwilling Akatsuki partner and later pursuer. Their smooth combat coordination does not overcome Sasori’s resentment and suspicions of betrayal 94 99 100 152 181.
- Itachi Uchiha — Desired vessel and a source of lasting humiliation. Itachi defeats his possession attempt, and later protections left to Sasuke thwart him again 150 153 243.
- Sasuke Uchiha — Student and intended future vessel. Orochimaru invests instruction, medicines, weapons, facilities, and personal sparring in him because he regards Sasuke’s growth as an investment in his own future body 195 243.
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Former teacher who seals the soul portions associated with Orochimaru’s arms. Orochimaru later releases and reanimates him 187 235.
- Jiraiya and Tsunade — Fellow Sannin and former comrades. They reluctantly reunite against Pain despite Orochimaru’s attack on Konoha 224 226.
- Pain — Former Akatsuki leader and target of Orochimaru’s desire for the Rinnegan. Orochimaru first attempts to steal his eyes during recruitment and later fights him in Konoha 94 226.
- Obito and Zetsu — Adversarial sources of both danger and research opportunities. Obito attempts to absorb him and warns him away from Zetsu, whose cells Orochimaru continues studying and cultivating 127 128 147 215.
