Background / History
Transmigration and Cultivation
Lin Yi entered the world before Huo Yuhao’s birth, while the Tang Sect had not yet been displaced by the Iron Blood Sect. His memories of the original story directed him toward opportunities including the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well, Ten-Thousand-Year Profound Ice Marrow, and Gold of Life 1 5.
He deliberately changed events that obstructed his growth while leaving unrelated developments alone. Preserving the broad course of the original story protected the foreknowledge he intended to use if ordinary cultivation failed to secure him a path to godhood 11.
Conflict with the Sea God
His first harvest at the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well prompted Tang San to send Clear Sky Sect pursuers after him. As a seven-ring Soul Sage, Lin Yi killed both a Soul Emperor and the sect’s level 96 master, leading Tang San to intervene personally through the Sea God’s power 9.
The Sea God pierced his body with the Sea God Trident, but Lin Yi resurrected elsewhere through his Heaven and Earth Chess Game. Surviving the encounter exhausted the foundation he had accumulated for more than a decade and shattered his seven red rings. He subsequently cultivated in hiding and concealed himself by merging with heaven and earth 9 10 12.
Failed Divine Inheritances
After reaching Limit Douluo, Lin Yi spent ten years searching the continent for a divine inheritance. He cultivated his spatial attribute extensively and forcibly located the God of Space’s inheritance site, yet received no trial at all. He also investigated other inheritances and considered damaged godhoods before abandoning the possibility of inheritance 1 11 20.
The birth of the child of fortune signaled the beginning of Tang San’s expected plans. Lin Yi therefore committed to his alternative: use the world as a chessboard, defeat a God King’s arrangements, and ascend through the momentum of that victory 1 11.
Appearance
- Clothing: Usually wears flowing green, azure, or cyan robes 1 13 34.
- Eyes: His gaze is compared to a deep starry sky; a chessboard is reflected in his eyes when he senses an unusual fluctuation 1 7.
- Bearing: Often stands with his hands behind his back, maintaining a composed posture even after costly battles 1 13.
- Martial Soul manifestations: Chessboard spaces, intertwined Black and White Energies, and a silvery human figure that shifts into a world-like board 5 9 29.
Personality
Lin Yi is self-reliant and determined to become a god without submitting to another deity. His refusal to accept repeated rejection eventually turns his search for an inheritance into a direct challenge against a God King’s control of the world 1 11.
His apparent boldness rests on extensive preparation. He stockpiles resurrection resources, studies his opponents, and preserves useful events rather than changing history indiscriminately. After Tang San’s first attack, he becomes particularly cautious about concealing his presence 10 11 12.
He is also ruthless when pursuing survival or advancement. He threatens Tian Meng into sacrificing himself, pressures Ning Yuan into withdrawing his sect from war, and feels no guilt about retaliating against the earlier Tang San—or potentially Tang Wulin—for his present enemy’s actions 15 35 41.
Abilities & Skills
Chess Martial Soul and Heaven and Earth Chess Game
Lin Yi’s cultivation links his body, Martial Soul, and surrounding world through the concept of a chessboard 5 11.
- Human-body chessboard: Interweaves his meridians, blood, and flesh to draw out his potential 5.
- World integration: Merges with heaven and earth to conceal his presence, inspect his surroundings, and locate hidden spaces 10 20.
- Ascension ritual: Uses selected people and world events as pieces in a contest against Tang San’s arrangements 1 11.
- Strategic flexibility: Can cultivate pieces on either side of a conflict without personally becoming one of those pieces 22 30.
Spatial Manipulation and Concealment
His spatial cultivation reaches the pinnacle of the Soul Master world and enables movement, defense, and hidden observation 11 13.
- Travels hundreds of meters in a step and crosses more than half the Sun Moon Empire in no more than half an hour 20 27.
- Evades Mingdu’s detection systems and spiritual searches by merging with the environment 1 10.
- Can remain undetected by divine consciousness, although direct visual observation is a separate matter 10.
- Uses an opponent’s attacks to sever surrounding space from its plane and fuse it with his chessboard, allowing the resulting realm to absorb damage 13.
Resurrection
Lin Yi can reconstruct himself through a prepared foundation and the power of heaven and earth 11 12.
- A prepared resurrection site allows rapid recovery of Soul Power, vitality, and spiritual power 12.
- Random-location resurrection is possible but more dangerous and lacks the same prepared recovery resources 12.
- Repeated revival consumes accumulated foundation and can severely damage his Soul Rings 12 13.
- Against the Evil Emperor, he fights without bringing his physical body, incorporating its power into his resurrection preparations instead 12.
Spirit Ascension and Soul Beast Transformation
After obtaining his Martial Soul Avatar, Lin Yi reverses his human form and experiences Soul Beast cultivation, raising his existing rings to hundred-thousand-year quality 7.
- Raising the rings’ essence does not supply all their required energy; he must subsequently replenish the shortfall through cultivation 9.
- During the Evil Emperor hunt, he exploits Soul Beast sacrifice and heavenly tribulation rules to temporarily push the beast across the eight-hundred-thousand-year threshold 14.
- He strengthens the Evil Emperor’s ring with Tian Meng’s compatible mental reserves while retaining his ninth ring as a pure fallback against possible corruption 19.
Seal the Game and Return to Play
His Spiritual Domain freezes a point in space-time, returns to an earlier moment, permits limited changes, and then restores the present 43.
- Collects the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well’s treasures before Tang San’s divine sense clone can emerge 42.
- Changes involving powerful figures’ predetermined fates impose a heavy burden and may break the domain; moving treasures carries comparatively little cost 43.
- Combines the domain with long-distance teleportation immediately before time returns to normal 43.
- Can theoretically escape an opponent who also reverses time, but activation intervals still create opportunities for interception 43.
Black and White Energies
Lin Yi uses Soul Power-guided Black and White Energies to support chosen pieces 29 31.
- Gives Wang Xin a medium through which he can rebuild his unstable cultivation foundation 29.
- Cannot directly remove Wang Xin’s accumulated medicinal toxins; Wang Xin must expel them through meditation 29.
- Can transmit the energies remotely without revealing himself, as demonstrated with the Huang brothers and Yu Mengdi 31 36.
- Awakens villagers’ Martial Souls while searching for promising recruits 31.
Emergency Teleportation
Lin Yi develops a life-saving method with reference to the Great Sumeru Hammer’s Ring Detonation technique 15.
- Shatters eight Soul Rings to compress a teleportation skill’s preparation time 15.
- Uses Tian Meng’s spiritual power to escape Di Tian and the other Ferocious Beasts 15.
- Recovers the shattered rings after completing his ninth-ring fusion 17.
Heavenly Screen Interaction
The Heavenly Screen is an external phenomenon whose arrival surprises Lin Yi, rather than a technique he deliberately summons 1 11.
- Lets him perceive the projected footage and audience comments 1.
- Provides control over delayed broadcasting, playback speed, and pauses in projection 24 27 28 37.
- Labels people he chooses as pieces with golden characters 28 30.
- Restricts cross-era exchanges about history, cultivation, and the Divine Realm, preserving part of his information advantage 34.
- Generates faith and Merit through its audiences and the changes he causes in their eras 21 41 46.
Equipment / Items
- Gold of Life: Obtained from a sinister carving knife after its evil power dissipates; its origin survives later depletion, though it has recovered only seventy percent by Chapter 8 5 8.
- Ten-Thousand-Year Profound Ice Marrow: Stored from the mysterious ice cavern and later fed to Tian Meng, who can absorb it despite Lin Yi lacking the ice attribute 5 19.
- Cold-Qi storage Soul Tool: Commissioned from a Level 7 Soul Engineer to carry Far North ambient Qi and resist the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well’s poisonous flowers during his first visit 41.
- Spirit and Immortal Herbs: Harvests the valley’s remaining treasures on his return, including both a mature Lovesick Heartbreak Red and another that has not yet taken form 42.
- Extraterrestrial Meteoric Iron sword: Gives this weapon to Ji Juechen 27.
Relationships
- Tang San / Sea God — Principal enemy. Repeatedly attempts to kill Lin Yi; Lin Yi retaliates by challenging his plans and exposing damaging information about him to Douluo I 9 14 38 39.
- Tian Meng — Coerced sacrificial partner and source of his ninth ring. Supplies spiritual power and compatible reserves, but resists surrendering his own origin 15 17 19.
- Evil Emperor — Target of his eighth-ring hunt. Lin Yi remains wary of the beast’s residual methods and potential possession attempts after absorption 14 19.
- Ji Juechen — A young talent he identifies in Mingdu and supports with an Extraterrestrial Meteoric Iron sword 10 27.
- Xiao Hongchen and Meng Hongchen — Sun Moon talents whose future development he considers changing to obstruct Tang San’s plans 3 7 10.
- Wang Xin — Recruited Soul Engineer. Lin Yi recognizes his squandered potential and helps him begin repairing his foundation 27 28 29.
- Three Ghosts of the Huang Family — Three Soul Engineer brothers selected as pieces and supported remotely 31.
- Xiao Huo — Nine-year-old with Innate Full Soul Power whom Lin Yi supports in hopes of influencing the next generation 31.
- Yu Mengdi — Young Angel Martial Soul user he strengthens, hoping she will kill more Evil Soul Masters rather than fight for the Sun Moon Empire 36.
- Ning Yuan — Sect leader he pressures into sealing the Nine Treasures Glazed Tile Sect away from the coming war 34 35.
- Snow Empress — Approaches her in the Extreme North and has Tian Meng explain his god-creation plan 44 45.
- Yun Ming — Cross-era viewer who defends his early achievements and later praises the ambition of his chess game despite his hostility toward the Sea God 3 24.
- Yu Xiaogang — Persistent critic who dismisses his Martial Soul and repeatedly disputes his achievements 1 3 13.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Evil Emperor Hunt
Lin Yi turns a seemingly unwinnable confrontation into a trap. He uses repeated deaths to guide the Evil Emperor’s attacks into separating a chessboard space, then sacrifices himself to briefly inflate the beast’s assessed cultivation. The resulting heavenly tribulation defeats the Evil Emperor without requiring Lin Yi to overcome its strongest techniques directly 12 13 14.
Tang San attacks again during the ring absorption, but Lin Yi has prepared to use the ring’s energy for resurrection. He survives and later advances toward his ninth ring 14.
Establishing the Chess Game
Lin Yi chooses the Sun Moon Empire because he considers its eventual victory over the Douluo Three Kingdoms overwhelmingly likely. He avoids disrupting its royal succession unnecessarily, instead gathering talents and neutralizing potential opposition 1 11 24.
His placements extend beyond Sun Moon territory. He supports Xiao Huo and Yu Mengdi, while forcing the Nine Treasures Glazed Tile Sect to remain outside the coming war, offering it a chance to seek influence after unification 31 35 36.
Influencing Douluo I
The Heavenly Screen allows Lin Yi to identify the earlier Tang San shortly after his Martial Soul awakening. He exposes Tang San’s outsider origins and future actions, provoking hostility throughout that era’s Soul Master world 38 39.
Although the audience’s calls to hunt Tang San do not immediately fulfill his goal, the disruption produces sustained Merit. Lin Yi identifies interference with an era’s protagonist as a particularly effective way to strengthen his ritual 41.
Return to the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well
Lin Yi returns to deny Tang San’s followers the valley’s remaining resources. When he triggers a waiting divine sense clone, he uses Seal the Game and Return to Play to harvest the valley before escaping to the Far North 37 41 42 43.
There, he locates the Snow Empress and introduces Tian Meng’s plan to help create a god 44 45.
Notable Quotes
“If you won't let me become a god, I'll forge my own godhood.” 1
“From today onward, I'll make heaven and earth my chessboard and all living beings my pieces, and play a game against you, God King!” 1
Trivia
- “Chess God” is a Douluo title, not proof of divinity: The initial golden power produced by the Heavenly Screen is explicitly identified as faith rather than a completed or embryonic godhood 8 17.
- His displayed present-day ring configuration is seven red, one gold, and one platinum 29.
- Yun Ming notes that no person named Lin Yi appears in his era’s recorded history, despite the Heavenly Screen depicting an earlier period 22.
- Lin Yi initially welcomes witnesses from past and future regardless of whether they belong to one timeline or separate worlds; he does not establish which explanation is correct 1.
