Background / History
Tobirama’s Disciple and Hiruzen’s Rival
Danzō was a personal disciple of the Second Hokage, Tobirama Senju. When their group was surrounded by Kumogakure forces, Tobirama asked who would remain behind to cover the retreat. Danzō wanted to volunteer, but a premonition of death stopped him. Hiruzen Sarutobi stepped forward instead and was named Third Hokage 7.
Danzō remained convinced that his hesitation had cost him the position. The narration, however, explains that Tobirama had already favored Hiruzen and used the appointment to keep him from undertaking the fatal rearguard mission 7.
As Konoha’s advisor and “Shadow,” Danzō commanded Root and exercised considerable influence over the village’s clans. His operatives conducted foreign intelligence gathering, assassinations, and surveillance of clans including the Uchiha, Hyūga, and Nara 7.
Campaign Against Hatake Sakumo
After the Second Shinobi World War, Sakumo’s growing prestige threatened Hiruzen’s authority. Hiruzen and Danzō exploited Sakumo’s decision to abandon a mission to save his comrades, orchestrating a village-wide campaign of ostracism intended to break his convictions. Within two months, the campaign had devastated him 3.
When Sakumo began retaliating against villagers and members of the Konoha Military Police Force, Danzō urged Hiruzen to arrest him immediately. Hiruzen refused, ending the argument by reminding Danzō that he was the Hokage. Sakumo, meanwhile, resolved to kill both men, identifying Danzō as the principal instigator of his predecessor’s tragedy 3.
Root’s Destruction and Death
After killing Hiruzen, Sakumo searched Danzō’s residence. Danzō was absent, so Sakumo killed the four Root elites guarding the house and proceeded to Root’s underground base. Danzō was there reviewing documents and contemplating how to cause trouble for Hiruzen when the intrusion began 5 6.
Danzō confronted the masked attacker after witnessing the death of unit leader Shimura Hayato. His Wind Release failed against Sakumo’s Armament Haki, and he ordered his guards to attack. As the remaining defenders were killed, Danzō fled. His danger instincts saved him from a pursuing flying slash, but Sakumo’s undisguised voice then revealed his identity 6 7 8.
Unable to escape, Danzō summoned Baku and combined its suction with a sustained Wind Release barrage. Sakumo endured the attack and cut Baku in two. Danzō then activated the Reverse Four Symbols Seal, sacrificing himself in an attempt to take Sakumo with him 8.
Danzō died from the technique’s extreme blood loss. Sakumo escaped by using his newly acquired Tremor-Tremor Fruit power to collapse the base, sending Danzō’s corpse and the still-active seal deep underground, then using Moonwalk to climb through the falling wreckage 9.
Posthumous Scapegoat
With no body recovered, Danzō was initially considered missing. Sakumo’s administration subsequently declared him murdered, disbanded Root, and transferred its surviving members to the ANBU. Danzō’s death automatically lifted their Cursed Tongue Eradication Seals 14.
Recovered Root records documented assassinations, surveillance, applications for human experimentation, and plans targeting important figures and village clans. Sakumo used these records to persuade Konoha’s leaders to falsely blame Danzō for Hiruzen’s murder. No funeral was arranged for him 18 19.
The public notice claimed that Danzō had ordered Root to assassinate Hiruzen to seize the Hokage position and that both men had died in the confrontation. This fabricated explanation appeared alongside accusations concerning Danzō’s other activities, including embezzlement and clan suppression. News of both leaders’ deaths encouraged the other great villages to intensify pressure on the Land of Fire 20.
Danzō was later blamed for sacrificial propaganda inserted into Ninja Academy textbooks. The assembled leaders understood that such changes could not have occurred without Hiruzen’s knowledge, but accepted Sakumo’s decision to name only Danzō 41.
Appearance
- Gaunt build: His exposed upper body is described as skinny 8.
- Sealing markings: Dense black formulas for the Reverse Four Symbols Seal covered his torso beneath his clothing 8.
- Cane: He carried a cane, which he struck against the floor during his argument with Hiruzen 3.
Personality
Danzō was calculating, authoritarian, and resentful of Hiruzen’s superior position. He pushed for decisive action against Sakumo and criticized Hiruzen’s handling of both Sakumo and the Uchiha. In private, he complained that Hiruzen enjoyed the benefits of leadership while leaving him the dirty work 3 6.
He concealed fear behind insults and composure, particularly when subordinates were watching. Against Sakumo, he maintained a dismissive manner even after recognizing the danger, then abandoned the battle while his remaining guards held the attacker off 7.
His self-preservation had limits. Once Baku was defeated and escape appeared impossible, he chose a suicidal sealing technique rather than accept defeat, openly declaring his intention to die with Sakumo 8.
Abilities & Skills
Wind Release
Danzō used ranged wind blades, including Wind Release: Vacuum Wave and Wind Release: Vacuum Serial Waves 7 8.
- Vacuum Wave: A B-rank cutting attack; Sakumo shattered it with an Armament Haki-coated punch 7.
- Vacuum Serial Waves: Produced successive wind blades for a sustained barrage 8.
- Combined attack: Baku’s suction increased Vacuum Serial Waves from B-rank to A-rank power and expanded the barrage to more than a dozen blades 8.
- Limitation shown: Neither his ordinary wind attacks nor the Baku-assisted barrage injured Sakumo through his Haki defenses 7 8.
Summoning Technique: Baku
Danzō summoned Baku, a giant elephant-like beast with long orange-brown fur and powerful suction 8.
- Drew Sakumo toward its mouth while restricting his ability to evade 8.
- Amplified Danzō’s Wind Release attacks 8.
- Was bisected by Sakumo’s concentrated, Haki-coated flying slash, immediately ending the suction 8.
Cursed Tongue Eradication Seal
Danzō used this forbidden technique to control Root members and prevent disclosure of restricted information 3 6.
- Placed a voice-triggered cursed seal on the target’s tongue 3.
- Paralyzed the target’s entire body and prevented speech if they attempted to discuss forbidden subjects 3.
- Left the victim’s life and death under the caster’s control 3.
- Worked alongside years of indoctrination to secure Root’s loyalty 7.
- Automatically disappeared from surviving Root members after Danzō died 14.
Reverse Four Symbols Seal
Danzō’s final trump card was an S-rank sacrificial sealing technique, prepared through formulas inscribed on his body 8.
- Could activate upon the user’s death or through a deliberate sacrifice 8.
- Expelled the user’s blood to form an expanding sealing pattern 8.
- Drew in and completely sealed everything within a five-meter radius 8.
- Guaranteed the user’s death and could not be interrupted once released, even by killing the caster 8.
- Nearly trapped Sakumo; he escaped by changing the terrain and dropping the corpse and active seal underground 9.
Danger Instincts
Danzō experienced strong premonitions of mortal danger 7.
- His instincts discouraged him from volunteering for Tobirama’s rearguard mission 7.
- He avoided a flying slash from behind by dropping flat without looking back 7.
Relationships
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Old friend, political rival, and partner in the campaign against Sakumo. Danzō resented Hiruzen’s authority but repeatedly backed down when reminded who held the Hokage position 3 6.
- Tobirama Senju — Teacher. Danzō believed that failing to volunteer for a dangerous mission had cost him Tobirama’s approval and the Hokage title 7.
- Hatake Sakumo — Victim of Danzō’s political persecution and later his attacker. Their confrontation ended with Danzō’s failed attempt at mutual destruction 3 8 9.
- Shimura Hayato — One of his most capable Root unit leaders; killed before Danzō arrived to confront Sakumo 6.
- Root members — Subordinates controlled through cursed seals and indoctrination. Some surviving members felt freed from chains when his death removed their seals 7 14.
- Baku — Summoned combat partner used to strengthen his Wind Release; cut in two during the battle with Sakumo 8.
