Background / History

Daiyu’s Reconstruction

Before becoming general, Xiahou Chan was a squad leader who followed Qingzhu. He risked his life to escort her to safety, an act Ayinai credited with preserving her first Emanator. In the tenth year after Daiyu’s reconstruction, its army was renamed the Manifest Existence Army, and Xiahou Chan was elected general by popular vote 6.

Daiyu’s government divided responsibilities between its Helmsman and General: Qingzhu handled internal affairs, while Xiahou Chan handled external affairs. Both petitioned Ayinai to allow the restored Xianzhou to sail again after learning that a thousand years had passed in the outside universe 8.

Return to the Wider Universe

The discovery of Yu Xian’er’s pregnancy brought Xiahou Chan, Qingzhu, and Ayinai rushing to the Alchemy Commission. Xiahou Chan recognized her husband, Muyun, as a former recruits’ competition champion. The prospect of a new generation eased the leadership’s fears that Daiyu had no future 8 9.

After Ayinai approved Daiyu’s departure, Xiahou Chan drilled recruits during the journey to the Itasumai Star System. There, he and Qingzhu released Emanator-level pressure that persuaded The Family’s regional head to visit Daiyu personally 9 10.

While Qingzhu visited The Family’s territory, Xiahou Chan remained responsible for Daiyu’s protection. Under his watch, checkpoint inspections became exceptionally strict, and incoming goods underwent special Artisanship Commission inspections 11.

Admission of the Qi Lineage

Xiahou Chan received Qi Shige’s request for his Halovian branch to join Daiyu. Initially wary of admitting a group whose dissonant powers were unstable, he accepted after Ayinai assured him that she could resolve their condition 11.

On his own authority, he required the immigrants to relinquish their former identities as members of The Family and belong solely to Daiyu. Ayinai then explained that their sensitivity to outside powers could make them battlefield healers capable of replenishing the army’s Path power. Recognizing their military value, Xiahou Chan immediately reported the opportunity to Qingzhu 12.

Automaton Revolt and Yuanqiao Intervention

Xiahou Chan fought alongside Wanmeng, Qi Tianque, and the Manifest Existence Army against berserk automatons at the Artisanship Commission. After Shi Mo revealed that intelligent machines were revolting across the universe, he hurried to discuss a response with Qingzhu 20 21.

Reports from Yuanqiao initially presented its unrest as an automaton revolt accompanied by rebellion. Ayinai’s explanation exposed a conflict between nobles and commoners, making Xiahou Chan realize that Daiyu descendants had supplied misleading information to manipulate their intervention 21.

On Yuanqiao, he demanded action against nobles who had oppressed the population and ordered their leaders brought to the square. He accepted Mr. Lu’s proposal to negotiate for their businesses before carrying out punishments, first seeking Qingzhu’s approval. He later accepted sixty percent of the acquired properties for Daiyu on her behalf 23.

Anti-Garden War

The destruction of Ayinai’s statue enraged Xiahou Chan. He entered the campaign against the apparent Dong Tian and broke a Garden Army formation with an Emanator-level assault, then led the allied advance while Wanmeng rescued the surrounded Guard Corps 32 36.

As more factions joined the coalition, command of the Alliance Army passed from Elder Ge to Xiahou Chan. Qingzhu’s apparent entrapment left him as its only frontline Emanator, while the coalition’s administrative demands strained his patience 37.

During the campaign, he caught Amo and Xiaohe sneaking into his tent. After learning Xiaohe’s identity as the Heart of Nihility, he accepted the pair as allies. He, Wanmeng, and Qi Tianque each assigned a subordinate to a secret protection squad for them 37 39 40.

Under his command, the Alliance regained sixty percent of the Ayinai System’s planets. Following news that Daiyu’s mother and newborn daughter were safe, he declared a celebration, then ordered a surprise attack on a Garden granary stronghold once the festivities ended 41 42.

Final Battle and Elder Ge’s Betrayal

For the final offensive, Xiahou Chan assigned Amo, supported by Wanmeng, Qi Tianque, and Elder Ge, to confront Dong Tian. He intended to remain with the main force against a possible Emanator-level opponent, but the appearance of the planet-destroying Aynais forced him to intervene personally 48 55.

He initially held the advantage over Dong Tian, but his opponent’s monstrous transformation suppressed and wounded him. With Amo assisting, Xiahou Chan continued fighting and eventually delivered the killing blow. Elder Ge then revealed that the defeated enemy had been an impostor, while the real Dong Tian had been imprisoned and experimented upon 56 57 58.

The finishing attack left Xiahou Chan almost completely exhausted. When Elder Ge tore out and crushed Qi Tianque’s core, he could neither retaliate nor remain airborne without Amo’s support. Despite his depleted condition, he continued opposing Elder Ge and attempted to rise when the traitor displayed Emanator-level Voracity power 58 59 61.

During the ensuing crisis, Xiahou Chan and Wanmeng deduced that the modified broodmother had been used to extract and transfer divine power into Elder Ge 62.

Postwar Activities

After the war, Xiahou Chan and Qingxin disagreed over how freely Daiyu’s victory banquet should be organized. Ayinai mediated a compromise: Xiahou Chan took responsibility for security, Qingxin managed the venue, menu, and performances, and Wanmeng handled flyers and formations 69.

When the restored Qi Tianque appeared outside before fully recovering, Xiahou Chan immediately supported him and scolded him for leaving bed with such a serious chest injury 71.

Personality

Ayinai considers Xiahou Chan upright, incorruptible, honest, and brave. His devotion to Existence is personal as well as religious: he swears lifelong service to its Path and later asks Xiaohe to obtain Ayinai’s autograph or photograph for him 6 40.

His carefree manner conceals considerable thoughtfulness. He readily befriends Qi Tianque, treats younger companions protectively, and enjoys drinking and bantering with his colleagues. Shi Mo nevertheless remembers him as exceptionally arrogant in his youth 16 20 38.

Xiahou Chan places great importance on soldiers’ dignity. When Elder Ge calls the fallen Guard Corps “sinners,” he angrily threatens him for insulting heroes. Once Elder Ge explains his meaning, Xiahou Chan withdraws his weapon and apologizes for acting rashly 37.

He prefers direct military action and deterrence through strength, and finds complicated coalition administration exhausting. This does not prevent tactical deception: he uses an apparent day of revelry to prepare a surprise offensive. Against enemies, he deliberately employs taunts and contemptuous remarks 9 37 42 55.

His initial hostility toward Nihility softens when confronted with people Ayinai accepts. Although he once proposes killing Nihility worshippers, he later welcomes Xiaohe as family and considers how to train Amo even if he follows Nihility or Abundance 9 39.

Emanator Power of Existence

• Channels dense Existence power through his body and halberd, producing attacks that crack the surrounding air and devastate enemy formations 36.
