Background / History

First encounter with Wu Yi

Ronava confronted Wu Yi after he revived Teppei, whose soul had already left his body. Speaking through a maid, she identified Wu Yi as the Fifth Descender: an outsider absent from Irminsul whose soul carried weight comparable to an entire world. She explained that death in Teyvat was complete only when the departed soul returned to the Ley Lines 3.

Teppei’s revival had left a vacancy that the Ley Lines filled by taking the maid’s soul. Ronava recovered that soul and calmed the disturbance, pardoning Wu Yi because he had not understood the consequences. Before leaving, she warned that neither she nor the Heavenly Principles would tolerate unlimited interference 3 4.

Confrontation at Tenshukaku

After Wu Yi resurrected Rosalyne, Ronava opened a rift at Tenshukaku and appeared in person. Wu Yi initially mistook her for Idrila, the Aeon of Beauty; her irritation disappeared when he explained the comparison. Their conversation turned to his commitment to the Path of Abundance, which Ronava praised as the attitude of an excellent follower and companion 9 10.

Wu Yi then proposed marriage. Ronava rejected him, emphasizing that admiration would not exempt him from the rules of death, but praised his courage, candor, and appreciation of her beauty 10 11.

Ronava killed Rosalyne and the secretly listening Kujou Sara, explaining that the Shade of Life would shortly revive them with brief memory loss and possible nightmares. She also intended to temporarily kill Wu Yi and erase his knowledge of the incident. Her Authority over Death failed against him twice, leaving her unable to explain his immunity 12 13.

When Ronava insisted that Rosalyne’s soul still had to return to the Ley Lines, Wu Yi used Soul Grafting Surgery to create a substitute from fragments of Rosalyne’s and his own souls. Ronava verified that the substitute satisfied the Ley Lines and negotiated an agreement instead 14.

Agreement with the Apostle of Death

Ronava imposed three conditions on Wu Yi’s future interventions 15:

Rule Terms
Preserve the Ley Lines Ordinary treatment is unrestricted. Resurrection requires notifying Ronava and satisfying the Ley Lines’ hunger. Souls already fully merged with the Ley Lines—generally after twenty-four hours—must not be forcibly extracted, because doing so would damage them 15.
Keep resurrection secret Wu Yi may revive beings who die before him, but must not publicize the ability. Teppei and Rosalyne’s recoveries must be presented as treatment performed before death; Wu Yi must account for the Raiden Shogun and Traveler having witnessed Rosalyne’s execution 15.
Repay the additional work Each person saved from death obliges Wu Yi to perform one task for Ronava. His existing interventions leave him owing two tasks, which she says will involve work such as ferrying souls or soothing the Ley Lines rather than killing 15.

Ronava named Wu Yi her apostle and gave him a black feather with which to summon her or obtain protection. She then departed, promising to return once she had chosen his tasks. Rosalyne awoke without remembering her death and resurrection 15.

Appearance

  • Face and eyes: Delicate features with slightly rounded cheeks; jewel-like golden eyes bearing seven-petaled flower patterns in her true form. The possessed maid’s eyes instead display seven-pointed stars 3 10.
  • Clothing: A red, black, and white ensemble featuring a strapless black dress, red feather-like ornamentation, and sheer black stockings. Her long skirt spreads outward against gravity 10.
  • Wings: Dark red wings float behind her, pierced by numerous eye-like holes 10.
  • Deathly manifestations: An ominous red-and-black aura surrounds her true form. Her appearances are accompanied by crimson eyes, darkness, and spatial rifts; her first encounter also brings a chilling wind and crow calls 3 9 10.

Personality

Ronava maintains a lofty, formal manner and expects recognition of her divine office. She prefers “Ruler of Death” to the more ordinary “god of death,” and objects when Wu Yi calls her adorable, insisting that “beautiful, elegant, dignified and gracious” are more suitable descriptions 3 13.

Her dismissive words frequently contrast with her reactions. She claims not to care about mortal opinions, yet visibly enjoys Wu Yi’s compliments and softens when he asks for her personal name rather than merely her title. His proposal startles her, and she follows her rejection with praise for the qualities that distinguish him from other mortals 3 10 11.

Despite her severity, Ronava distinguishes ignorance from deliberate wrongdoing and respects professional conviction. She pardons Wu Yi’s first offense and later sympathizes with his refusal, as a physician, to abandon a dying patient. Privately, she even considers eliminating the side effects of his intended temporary death 4 12 13.

Ronava is lonely but regards a desire for companionship as inappropriate for Death. She tells herself that the living naturally fear and resist her. Making Wu Yi her apostle becomes her first attempt to find a companion, and his initial surprise briefly leaves her visibly uneasy 10 15.

Abilities & Skills

Authority over Death

Ronava can directly bestow death upon a target 12 13.

  • Instantly strips Rosalyne and Kujou Sara of their lives 13.
  • Kills another outsider in Snezhnaya through the Curse of Death; that outsider subsequently revives 13 14.
  • Explains that Descenders may resist death by having their souls escape the world of the dead and return to their bodies, rather than remaining entirely unaffected 13.
  • Cannot affect Wu Yi with this authority. The narration attributes his immunity to his existence as an Emanator surpassing Teyvat’s authority; Ronava does not learn the explanation 13.
  • Claims she could instead kill him by destroying his body, but does not attempt it 14.

Soul and Ley Line Management

Guiding departed souls into the Ley Lines is Ronava’s appointed duty 3.

  • Recovers the maid’s displaced soul and calms the disturbance caused by Teppei’s revival 4.
  • Senses whether the Ley Lines’ hunger has been satisfied, allowing her to verify Wu Yi’s substitute soul 14.
  • Recognizes the point at which a soul’s complete absorption makes extraction damaging to the Ley Lines 15.

Possession and Spatial Movement

Ronava can act through a mortal vessel or appear personally through a rift 3 10.

  • Possesses the maid to address Wu Yi without appearing in her true form 3.
  • Opens spatial rifts to enter and leave Tenshukaku and deliver her token 9 15.
  • Moves almost instantaneously between positions while examining Wu Yi 13.

Memory Erasure

Ronava can erase memories associated with death and resurrection 15.

  • Offers to remove the revived person’s memories to help conceal Wu Yi’s ability 15.
  • Leaves Rosalyne unable to remember her execution and revival 15.
  • Her proposed temporary-death procedure relies on the Shade of Life for resurrection; Ronava does not claim that revival as her own power 12.

Equipment / Items

  • Black feather token — Given to Wu Yi upon his appointment as apostle. Holding it and softly calling Ronava’s name allows him to summon her; it can also protect him from attackers. She instructs him not to disturb her without a good reason 15.

Relationships

  • Wu Yi — Initially a rule-breaking Descender under her scrutiny, later her appointed apostle. She rejects his marriage proposal but grows receptive to his company and respects his medical convictions 3 11 13 15.
  • Heavenly Principles — The authority whose rules she enforces as the shadow presiding over death 3 15.
  • Rhinedottir / Ruler of Life — Ronava suspects Wu Yi’s resurrection abilities and immunity may indicate a connection to the Ruler of Life, prompting her to consider visiting Rhinedottir 14.
  • Rosalyne / La Signora — Her resurrection triggers Ronava’s second confrontation with Wu Yi. Ronava ultimately accepts a substitute soul in her place and erases her memories of the incident 9 14 15.
  • Kujou Sara — A concealed witness whom Ronava temporarily kills during the Tenshukaku encounter 12 13.
