Background / History

Earth and the Sea of Stars

Wu Yi originally lived on Earth, where he played Genshin Impact before work and overtime prevented him from keeping up regularly. After transmigrating to the Honkai: Star Rail universe, he spent many years traveling among the stars and became an Emanator of Abundance 1 2 8.

The Aeon of Abundance was his teacher, and he once followed the path of healing alongside her and his senior fellow disciple. Their eventual separation remains unexplained. Wu Yi later performed an operation on himself that restored his “true self,” but he considers his earlier crimes far worse than those of Scaramouche and the Doctor and does not regard that recovery as absolution 6 7 10.

His standing among the Denizens of Abundance sometimes attracted worship he found intolerable. On one planet, crowds prostrated themselves before him, and the tribal chief offered him thirty “holy virgins.” Wu Yi refused, fled that night, and subsequently avoided regions inhabited by the Denizens of Abundance 12.

Before reaching Teyvat, he was hunted on the Xianzhou Luofu by all seven Arbiter-Generals. He escaped through a spatial rift opened amid the battles, carrying severe injuries and lingering Hunt energy within his body 1 8.

Arrival on Watatsumi Island

Wu Yi awakened near Lumine and Paimon in Bourou Village. Recognizing Teppei, whose vitality had been exhausted by a Delusion, he restored the young man’s body and retrieved his departing soul. He then reprimanded Teppei for ignoring the weapon’s dangers and encouraged him to pursue strength through his own efforts 1 2.

His treatment earned Kokomi’s trust and permission to move freely around Watatsumi Island. He healed the island’s patients, studied confiscated Delusions, and began treating wounded soldiers from both the Resistance and the Shogunate. When Shogunate soldiers tried to prevent his departure after receiving treatment, he used a Delusion to overcome their interference 2 4.

Teppei’s resurrection also drew Ronava’s attention. She explained that preventing a departed soul from returning to the Ley Lines could cause them to claim an innocent replacement. Although she repaired the disturbance and warned him against repeating it, Wu Yi resolved to find a way to continue saving people 3 4.

Fatui Recruitment

La Signora approached Wu Yi after learning about his medical accomplishments and Delusion modifications. Her initial attempts to intimidate him failed: he exposed his knowledge of her past and displayed seven fully charged Delusions, leaving her unwilling to force his cooperation 5 6.

Access to difficult medical cases, patients, research resources, and custom Delusions interested him more than money or authority. He agreed to cooperate with the Fatui subject to four conditions, which the Tsaritsa subsequently accepted 7 8:

  • His relationship with the Tsaritsa would be cooperative, and he could leave freely 7.
  • The Fatui would stop testing Delusions on people from other nations and destroy their overseas Delusion factories 7.
  • Delusions developed with his assistance could not be used against other nations 7.
  • He retained the right to refuse military service 7.

Tenshukaku and the Agreement with Death

Wu Yi accompanied the Resistance’s attack on Inazuma City partly to prevent his prospective colleague Rosalyne from dying before he joined the Fatui. Arriving inside Tenshukaku after the Raiden Shogun departed, he found her reduced to ashes and resurrected her 8 9.

Ronava appeared to confront him over this second resurrection. During their conversation, Wu Yi explained his commitment to the Path of Abundance and unexpectedly proposed marriage. She rejected him, though she praised his candor and courage 10 11.

When Ronava attempted to bestow death upon him, her authority had no effect. Wu Yi concealed the difference in their levels of existence and instead demonstrated Soul Grafting Surgery, creating a substitute for Rosalyne’s soul that satisfied the Ley Lines. Ronava then established rules for his future resurrections, appointed him her apostle, and gave him a black feather as her token 13 14 15.

Voyage to Snezhnaya

After Rosalyne awakened with her memories of dying and being resurrected erased, Wu Yi presented her survival as a rescue from the Raiden Shogun’s strike. She decided to return to Snezhnaya and take him to meet the Tsaritsa 15 16.

During the seven-day voyage, Wu Yi treated everyone aboard the ship. A resupply stop in Liyue allowed him to obtain local medical books and herbs, which he studied rapidly enough to begin prescribing Teyvat’s remedies. By the seventh day, the ship was expected to reach Snezhnaya that day 17.

Appearance

  • Face and bearing: Strikingly handsome, with sharp eyes, bright brows, an upright posture, and the easy elegance of a wandering swordsman 2.
  • Abundance-altered appearance: His transformed life level brought his appearance to what the narration describes as the pinnacle for humanoid beings, without the uncontrolled growth associated with ordinary Abominations 2.
  • Spiritual eye: A vertical opening appears on his forehead when he examines bodies or their remaining life information, then closes without leaving a visible mark 1 9.
  • Clothing: Initially arrives dirty and dressed in battle-torn rags; changes into clean Inazuman clothing at Sangonomiya 2.
  • Delusion ornament: Carries seven Delusions of different elements together at his belt 5.

Personality

Wu Yi’s devotion to medicine combines professional conviction with a powerful personal urge to treat illnesses. He insists that healing is how he practices his Path rather than proof of a noble character. Kokomi nevertheless judges him by the people he helps, while Wu Yi remains conscious of crimes committed before recovering his true self 2 7 8.

He treats patients regardless of allegiance and rejects deliberately creating victims to satisfy his medical cravings. His insistence on safe treatments also reflects experience: he considers a procedure improper if its aftereffects are unacceptable to the patient 2 4 7.

Independent and skeptical of authority, Wu Yi respects the Aeon of Abundance without treating her as infallible. He states that he would oppose and correct her if she abandoned her own Path. Neither wealth nor status persuades him to join the Fatui, and he negotiates explicit limits on how they may use his work 6 7 10.

He also enjoys teasing others and watching amusing situations unfold. With Ronava, he combines flirtation with careful attention to her reactions, sometimes indulging her divine pride rather than provoking an argument. Although he describes his attraction as “love at first sight” or “lust at first sight,” his private thoughts make clear that beauty alone does not explain it 11 12 13.

Abilities & Skills

Power of Abundance

Wu Yi commands vast life energy capable of repairing bodies and reversing extreme vitality loss 1 8 9.

  • Restores Teppei from a prematurely aged, lifeless body to a youthful condition 1.
  • Cures Delusion-related damage, hidden ailments, and longstanding injuries 2 17.
  • Reconstructs Rosalyne’s bones, organs, muscles, skin, and hair from information preserved in her ashes 9.
  • Continuously repairs damage caused by the Hunt energy inside his own body; at his arrival, that energy remains active despite his external wounds being healed 1.

Spiritual Eye and Medical Analysis

His spiritual eye detects bodily conditions, souls, and traces of a person’s life information 1 9.

  • Identifies that Teppei’s vitality is exhausted and his soul has already left his body 1.
  • Reads Rosalyne’s physical information from ashes despite extensive destruction of her cellular structure 9.
  • Can work from a faint trace or causal connection rather than requiring intact cells 9.

Resurrection and Soul Retrieval

Wu Yi can restore a body and return its departed soul, but the two operations are distinct: Rosalyne’s reconstructed body initially remains an empty shell 9.

  • Retrieves souls being drawn underground toward the Ley Lines 1 9.
  • Manifests a fanged mouth in his palm to draw in souls 9 14.
  • Requires physical remains and a soul that has not already been absorbed into the Ley Lines; he therefore cannot promise to revive someone dead for five hundred years 9.

Soul Grafting Surgery

Wu Yi can grow an imitation soul by combining a fragment of another person’s soul with a strand of his own 14.

  • Produces a substitute matching Rosalyne’s soul 14.
  • Satisfies the Ley Lines’ demand without surrendering her original soul 14.
  • Provides the practical basis for his resurrection agreement with Ronava 14 15.

Resistance to the Authority over Death

Ronava’s attempts to directly bestow death upon Wu Yi fail because his level of existence exceeds the authority acting upon him 13.

  • The failure is not attributed merely to his status as a Descender 13.
  • Ronava threatens physical destruction afterward, but does not test that method against him 14.

Delusion Research and Elemental Use

Wu Yi identifies Delusions as artificial external magical organs that convert vitality into elemental power 2.

  • Supplies their energy demands through Abundance rather than relying on a user’s limited vitality 2.
  • Modifies Delusions to store life force for safer use 4.
  • Carries seven charged Delusions, each representing a different element 5.
  • Uses a modified Delusion to assist Lumine before her attack on the Delusion factory 4.
  • Enters Tenshukaku in a movement accompanied by a brief thread of lightning 8.

Medical Knowledge and Self-Control

His expertise extends beyond supernatural regeneration 11 17.

  • Rapidly learns Liyue’s medicine and writes prescriptions using local herbs 17.
  • Distinguishes Kolya’s lingering anxiety and lack of sleep from already-cured Delusion damage 17.
  • Can suppress his emotions and examine memories alongside neuronal activity, though he declines to analyze his attraction to Ronava that way 11.
  • Possesses greatly improved memory following surgery 1.

Resurrection Agreement

Ronava permits ordinary treatment but places specific restrictions on interference with death 15.

Rule Terms
Treating the living Wu Yi may freely save living patients 15.
Resurrecting the dead Must notify Ronava and soothe the Ley Lines; permission is limited to beings who die before him 15.
Merged souls Must not forcibly extract souls already completely merged with the Ley Lines, which generally occurs twenty-four hours after separation from the body 15.
Secrecy Must conceal his resurrection ability and make the Traveler and Raiden Shogun believe Rosalyne was saved before death 15.
Service owed Owes Ronava one task for each person saved from death. His initial debt is two tasks; she specifies work such as ferrying souls or soothing the Ley Lines rather than killing 15.
