Background / History

Five hundred years earlier, Rosalyne was a young woman from Mondstadt and the lover of Rustam, the “Young Wolf” and deputy grand master of the Knights of Favonius. She traveled to Sumeru to study, where she was a top student. Before her departure, she and Rustam promised to marry upon her return 5.

During the Khaenri’ah cataclysm, Rustam died defending Mondstadt against Durin and invading monsters. Rosalyne returned after learning of his death. Overcome by grief, she contained liquid fire within her body and became the Crimson Witch of Flames, burning the invaders while nearly burning herself out 5.

Pierro found her, supplied the Cryo Delusion that suppressed her flames, and invited her into the Fatui. Drawn to the Tsaritsa’s dream, she became a devoted follower of the Cryo Archon and eventually the Eighth Harbinger 5.

As La Signora, she took the Anemo Gnosis from Barbatos and obtained the Geo Gnosis through a deal with the Geo Archon. Her diplomatic work then brought her to Inazuma 5.

Personality

Rosalyne is proud, aggressive, and accustomed to negotiating from a position of strength. Her initial recruitment plan included forcibly taking Wu Yi or his technology if necessary. Once she realized that he was stronger than her, she abandoned coercion and adopted a more conciliatory approach 5 6.

Her arrogance coexists with considerable shrewdness. When money and power failed to interest Wu Yi, she studied his behavior and built her offer around his dedication to medicine. She habitually assumes self-interested motives in others, interpreting his tireless healing as a possible means of increasing his power rather than accepting it as simple altruism 6 7.

Her loyalty to the Tsaritsa is deeply personal. Although she recognizes that Snezhnaya might pragmatically disown a dead subordinate, she angrily rejects Wu Yi’s suggestion that this could apply to her. Rustam’s death remains another emotional vulnerability: learning that Wu Yi can resurrect the dead immediately prompts her to ask about reviving someone who died five hundred years earlier 9 16.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Recruiting Wu Yi

Rosalyne meets Wu Yi outside Bourou Village to recruit him for his medical expertise and Delusion modifications. Her composure falters when he reveals knowledge of her past, then displays seven fully charged Delusions of different elements. Fearing his strength, she sets aside intimidation and formally invites him into the Fatui 5.

After discovering that wealth and authority do not appeal to him, she offers access to patients, difficult medical cases, advanced research, and transportation across Teyvat. In exchange, he would treat Fatui soldiers suffering from Delusion side effects 6 7.

Wu Yi agrees only if the Tsaritsa accepts four conditions 7:

• His membership must remain a cooperative arrangement, with freedom to leave.
• Delusion testing on people from other nations must end, and Fatui Delusion factories outside Snezhnaya must be destroyed.
• Delusions developed with his help cannot be used in conflicts against other nations.
• He retains the right to refuse military service.

Rosalyne submits these demands to the Tsaritsa and later informs Wu Yi by letter that they have been accepted 8.

Death and Resurrection at Tenshukaku

During her diplomatic visit to Tenshukaku, Rosalyne subdues Kujou Sara, fights Lumine in a Duel Before the Throne, and loses. The Raiden Shogun then reduces her to ashes. Wu Yi arrives afterward and decides to resurrect his prospective colleague 8 16.

Using the life information preserved in her ashes, Wu Yi reconstructs her body and retrieves her soul before the Ley Lines fully absorb it. On awakening, Rosalyne initially relives her final terrified protest. Once she understands what happened, she urgently asks whether he can revive someone dead for five hundred years. His explanation that resurrection requires both physical remains and a recoverable soul leaves her despondent 9.

Ronova subsequently kills Rosalyne and Kujou Sara to clear the area for her conversation with Wu Yi, explaining that the Shade of Life will restore them with recent memories erased. When Ronova later intends to claim Rosalyne’s soul for the Ley Lines, Wu Yi creates an acceptable substitute through Soul Grafting Surgery, combining a fragment of Rosalyne’s soul with a strand of his own 12 14.

Rosalyne awakens without remembering her death or resurrection. Under Ronova’s secrecy requirement, Wu Yi tells her that he saved her before the Shogun’s strike could kill her 15 16.

Withdrawal to Snezhnaya

Believing herself the survivor of an attempted assassination, Rosalyne declares that Inazuma must answer for attacking a Snezhnayan envoy. She decides to return home immediately and take Wu Yi to meet the Tsaritsa 16.

Her departure is a calculated retreat. She reasons that the Fatui’s dealings with the commissions have probably been exposed and that remaining in Inazuma could make her the Shogun’s hostage. She completes the evacuation arrangements before Lumine returns from the Plane of Euthymia 17.

Seven days into the voyage, Wu Yi finds her alone in the ship’s dining room, staring at a letter beside untouched borscht and honey cake. She stiffens at his approach and asks why he is there; the letter’s contents are not disclosed 17.

Relationships

• Rustam — Deceased lover and intended husband. His death drove her transformation into the Crimson Witch; five centuries later, she still hopes for a way to bring him back 5 9.
• The Tsaritsa — Sovereign and object of Rosalyne’s loyalty. Rosalyne follows her dream and refuses to let Wu Yi’s political arguments shake her devotion 5 16.
