Background / History
Creation and the Garden of Eden
The Church’s Bible credits Caesar with bringing clarity to chaos and creating space-time, the universe, and life through speech. Its creation account describes the first beings as lacking reproduction, death, and natural order, after which God created the Garden of Eden 2.
The Holy Covenant presents a less reverent account. It describes disorderly reproduction among creatures and God becoming interested in mating. His offspring included Shenyin, born through a woman; Jonah, born through a man; and Kuba, born through a corpse. God also produced numerous monster species through unions with animals 2 35.
According to the same text, God created death and hung it in the sky as the sun. He appointed Shenyin to govern the beginning of life and Jonah to govern its ending. Kuba objected and was exiled, thereafter avoiding sunlight to escape death 2 3.
Kuba’s Attack
Ascension records that God lay with a lamb until nightfall. The scent of blood attracted Kuba, who emerged from hiding and killed God high in the sky. God’s spilled blood soaked into the earth and brought vitality to living things 9.
Shenyin then severed Kuba’s head and dismembered his body. The published account says that Shenyin hung God’s corpse on a wooden cross beneath the sun, naming the act “Ascension” 9.
Revival and Sealing
Revival states that God’s divine consciousness awakened in Heaven while his body remained on the cross. It also records messengers bringing destruction to the earth, Jonah being imprisoned in the sun, and Shenyin cutting Heaven off from the Garden of Eden 9.
The dying pope later reveals that God never truly died. Shenyin used a cross made from Kuba’s bones, rather than ordinary wood, to seal him. Kuba’s divinity and the accumulated death supplied by sunlight prevent God from awakening 36 37.
Discovery by Archbishop Adam
During the selection of his successor, the old pope leads Archbishop Adam through ancient murals into a hidden mountain cavern. There, Adam sees God’s body suspended above a jade collection platform, surrounded by hundreds of dormant Holy Knights 34 35.
Adam notices what appears to be breathing. The pope explains that the movement is a manifestation of life in the sealed body. Before dying, he entrusts Adam with maintaining the seal, warning that God’s awakening would destroy everything. That responsibility must pass to the next ruler even if the Church itself falls 36 37.
Appearance
God’s physical body is humanoid but unnervingly perfect. Adam’s close inspection reveals features that distinguish it sharply from a human body 35 36.
- Height and build: Over two meters tall, with a slender frame and perfect proportions 35.
- Skin: Pale, smooth, delicate, and entirely without visible pores 36.
- Face: Exquisitely beautiful and neither distinctly male nor female 36.
- Hair and anatomy: Completely hairless, including the scalp; no visible genitals 36.
- Blood: Golden, seeping extremely slowly from the chest along a white bone spike 36.
- Religious depictions: Shown with a single white left wing. Ancient murals use wings to signify divinity, with the corresponding right half assigned to Kuba 4 34 35.
Personality
Church scripture portrays God as possessing desires, preferences, and favoritism rather than acting as an impersonal creator. Norton is particularly disturbed by Ascension, which depicts God’s sexual desire without connecting it to an act of creation. Adam likewise concludes that the recorded God’s humanity outweighs his divinity 9 37.
According to the old pope, God disliked vampires because they were independent copies of himself capable of bearing his divinity. Their existence made them potential rivals rather than merely subordinate creations 35.
Abilities & Skills
Creation
Scripture attributes the formation of the universe and its living inhabitants to God 2.
- Creates space-time and life through speech in the Bible’s account 2.
- Creates death, identified with the sun 2 3.
- Produces gods and monster species through mating; documented offspring include werewolves and Human-Headed Wolves 35 39.
- His spilled blood is said to have nourished life after Kuba’s attack 9.
Immortality and Persistent Life
The pope explicitly states that God is sealed, not dead. Even the apparently lifeless body retains manifestations of life 36.
- Death was separated from God’s own body, explaining why ordinary death cannot end him 36.
- His consciousness revives in Heaven according to Revival 9.
- His body remains capable of awakening unless the seal is maintained 37.
- He is not invulnerable: Kuba successfully attacked him, and Shenyin subsequently restrained him 9 37.
Divinity and Vampire Origins
The pope’s explanation distinguishes vampires from God’s other offspring: living partners contribute a changing, mortal nature, whereas corpses serve as vessels in which God’s genes develop without such a contribution 35.
- Vampires are described as genetic copies of God, rather than ordinary mixed offspring 35.
- This likeness allows vampires to bear God’s divinity 35.
- Kuba’s divine remains can suppress God precisely because they possess this shared nature 37.
Divine Blood
God’s blood is a resource used by the Church to cultivate Holy Knights 37.
- The old pope had previously visited the cavern to collect divine blood more than fifty years before bringing Adam there 36.
- A hollowed jade platform stands beneath the body to collect the exceptionally slow-flowing blood 35 36.
Overwhelming Presence
Even while sealed, God’s body exerts an intense effect on those who observe it 36.
- Adam experiences fascination, dread, trembling, and an instinctive sense of inferiority before a higher life-form 36.
- The old pope also shows fear and fascination despite already knowing the body’s identity 36.
Sealing Apparatus
| Component | Function or condition |
|---|---|
| Cross made from Kuba’s bones | Uses Kuba’s divinity to suppress God’s awakening 37. |
| White bone spike | Driven deep into God’s chest; golden blood seeps along it 36. |
| Sunlight | Supplies accumulated death to maintain the seal, rather than restoring God’s strength 37. |
| Oval crystal in the cavern ceiling | Focuses and intensifies sunlight onto the sealed body 37. |
| Jade collection platform | Contains a circular hollow beneath the cross for collecting divine blood 35 36. |
| Holy Knight guards | Two ancient Holy Knights guard the approach; hundreds more stand dormant inside the cavern 34 35. |
Relationships
- Shenyin — Eldest and favored son, appointed to govern life. Despite that position, he sealed God after Kuba’s attack to prevent the danger posed by God’s awakening 2 4 37.
- Jonah — Son born through God’s union with a man, identified in the Bible as Adam. Appointed ruler over death; later imprisoned in the sun according to Revival 2 9 26.
- Kuba — Vampire progenitor and offspring born through a corpse. Exiled by God, he later attacked him; his dismembered remains became the means of God’s imprisonment 2 9 37.
- The old pope — Custodian of the sealed body who collected divine blood and passed the secret to his successor 36 37.
- Pope Adam — Inherits responsibility for preserving the seal, even at the expense of the Church’s survival 37.
Influence on the Holy Lord Church
- Worship: Believers pray to Caesar for food and divine light; clergy invoke him as Father during Mass 6 7.
- Holy Judgment Order: Originally founded as a force belonging to God, it became effectively the pope’s personal army over thousands of years 29.
- Ascension Ritual: Publicly presented as a means of cleansing a sacrifice and sending the soul to serve God. Its ancient model—the exposure of God’s body to sunlight—actually prevents his awakening 12 37.
- Sacred imagery: A God Shepherding Sheep Picture burns Norton despite his concealment. Norton later theorizes that exposure to its holiness left an aura that Holy Knights could track 23 50.
- Holy Lord City: Revered as the Church’s holy land and associated by legend with God’s creation of life 23.
