Background / History
Fang Cheng comes from a wealthy family whose business is described as the largest in the area. His mother died two years before his dormitory conversation with Duan Ming, leaving him a substantial inheritance. He claims to have stopped using his father’s money, although his inherited wealth remains large enough that his father wants to borrow it for an investment project 19 38.
His father subsequently married a woman only three years older than Fang Cheng. Fang Cheng dislikes seeing his stepmother, who is pregnant, but also finds the family estate lonely: despite employing more than thirty servants, it offers little companionship while his father frequently stays out overnight. He prefers the school dormitory’s atmosphere to watching movies or playing golf at home 19.
His father initially opposed his enrollment at Divine Power School but eventually gave in. Rather than remain under his father’s protection or pursue a comfortable future, Fang Cheng intends to become independent and fight demonic creatures 19.
Appearance
- Forehead: Bears a white Divine Mark approximately ten centimeters long 3.
- Left cheek: Bears his second Divine Mark, which glows green 3.
- Inactive marks: His facial marks cease to be visible when not in use 4.
- Clothing: Wears a blue jacket during the dormitory discussion about the school’s rival societies 19.
Personality
Despite his privileged upbringing, Fang Cheng is approachable and generous. He brings bottled water for his classmates and initially wants to buy an entire truckload of flowers to celebrate Duan Ming’s demon-killing feat. He accepts the class’s decision to contribute equally instead. These gestures challenge Duan Ming’s initial expectation that he would be a spoiled, arrogant heir 15.
Fang Cheng’s desire to defend humanity is sincere. He regards reaching the demon-extermination front line as a great honor and admires Gu Chen as a symbol of humanity’s strength. Duan Ming comes to feel that Fang Cheng understands humanity’s greater cause more clearly than he himself does 19 23.
His ideals initially exceed his composure in real combat. During the school attack, fear stiffens his limbs and leaves his mind blank, preventing him from avoiding a blow he was physically capable of dodging. He later acknowledges this failure rather than denying Duan Ming’s assessment 24 29.
He is also willing to challenge unfair treatment regardless of an opponent’s status. When Zhao Qinghai strikes another student, Fang Cheng demands an apology despite Director Zhang’s interference and accepts a fight he knows he is unlikely to win 37 38.
Abilities & Skills
Divine Marks and Qi
Fang Cheng’s two Divine Marks give him considerable initial potential, but awakening a mark does not immediately grant him control over it 3 6.
- Uses his first mark to strengthen his Qi during Du Qinggang’s lessons 6.
- Can gather Qi into his fist for a concentrated punch 38.
- Learns to use his second mark through sustained training 41.
Combat Experience and Limitations
His early encounters expose a gap between his physical training and battlefield reactions 25 29.
- Provides covering fire that forces Qiu Yan to divide her attention between him and Duan Ming, despite failing to hit her 25.
- Freezes under attack; Duan Ming identifies experience, rather than insufficient strength, as the reason he fails to dodge Qiu Yan’s second strike 29.
- Is decisively outmatched by Zhao Qinghai, whose four years of Qi cultivation far exceed Fang Cheng’s less than two months of training 38.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Electromagnetic gun: Holds five rounds that deliver powerful electric shocks. Fang Cheng claims its current rivals the city’s protective power grid. Both shots he fires at Qiu Yan miss, demonstrating that the weapon’s power does not guarantee a hit against an alert opponent 20 25 26.
- Protective outfit: Resembles a bulletproof vest and is made from an unspecified material. He lends it to Duan Ming, who uses it during the fight against Qiu Yan; it prevents serious injury from a slash but does not eliminate the force of her hair attacks 24 25 26.
- Button-shaped explosive: Calls it a “miniature nuclear bomb” and says it is activated by pressing it and throwing it hard against the ground. He has never tested it; its supposed ability to destroy their dormitory room is his own estimate 20.
- Secret-weapon suitcase: Keeps twenty or thirty devices beneath his bed, considering them essential survival equipment 20.
- Medal of honor: Receives the school’s highest honor for helping defend it against the Church of the Dark Night. Although its old gold plating begins to peel, he declines to request a replacement because he feels his contribution did not merit the award 36.
Relationships
- Duan Ming — Classmate, roommate, and combat partner during the school attack. Fang Cheng lends him protective clothing and provides covering fire; afterward, Duan Ming advises him to overcome fear through combat experience 19 24 25 29.
- Dong Kai — Roommate and confidant who discusses Fang Cheng’s family, weapons, and future plans with him. Supports his demand that Zhao Qinghai apologize 19 20 23 37.
- Xu Yun / Xu Dazhuang — Roommate who praises his determination to fight demons and cautions him about keeping dangerous explosives in their room 19 20.
- Father — Wealthy businessman who initially opposes his school enrollment. Fang Cheng wants to stop depending on his protection 19.
- Mother — Died two years earlier and left him the inheritance that funds his independence 19.
- Gu Chen — Idolizes the seven-mark Divine Power Master as a bulwark against demonic invasion 23.
- Qiu Yan — Church of the Dark Night attacker who disarms and severely injures him with her hair-based Power of God 25 26.
- Zhao Qinghai — Opponent in the cafeteria confrontation; easily evades Fang Cheng’s punch and kicks him before the surrounding students intervene 37 38.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Church of the Dark Night Attack
After Zhang Hongji warns him and Duan Ming about intruders, Fang Cheng retrieves his weapons and protective equipment. When they learn that a bomb-carrying woman is approaching their dormitory, he lends Duan Ming his protective outfit and initially remains behind 24.
Fang Cheng subsequently fires at Qiu Yan from the second-floor corridor. His first shot distracts her, but after she activates her Power of God, her hair knocks away his gun and strikes him down. Duan Ming believes him dead; this apparent loss helps drive Duan Ming’s refusal to join the Church and his determination to avenge his classmate 25 26.
Fang Cheng survives and speaks from the corridor after Duan Ming kills Qiu Yan. While recovering in the infirmary, he learns about Duan Ming’s Endless Thunder ability and recognizes how fear undermined his own performance 27 29.
Cafeteria Confrontation
Fang Cheng takes the lead in demanding an apology after Zhao Qinghai assaults a student. He refuses to be intimidated by Zhao Qinghai’s connections or Director Zhang’s attempts to shield him 37.
Despite his unhealed hand and Zhao Qinghai’s much stronger Qi, he accepts a one-on-one challenge. Zhao Qinghai dodges his opening punch and kicks him in the back, prompting the surrounding students to swarm and beat Zhao Qinghai. Afterward, Fang Cheng remarks that the kick nearly broke his spine but declines an infirmary visit 38 39.
Intensified Training
Over the following half month, Fang Cheng trains harder with the single aim of becoming stronger and joining the Demon Suppression Army. When asked why he pushes himself so desperately, he explains that he does not want to face death regretting a failure to train. His effort culminates in control over his second Divine Mark 41.

“No, and I don’t want to know. But even if you’re the Divine Mark Association president’s own grandson, you still have to apologize today!” 37
