Boom! Boom! Boom!
A chain of explosions sent the tourists fleeing in panic. Under the violent shockwaves, the brick walls of nearby buildings cracked and collapsed, shards of glass scattered everywhere, and steel bars and concrete rained down from above like hail.
The Green Goblin wildly flung Pumpkin Bombs from his hands. Thunderous blasts surged out from the buildings, accompanied by relentless tremors and explosions. The crowded masses became a raging torrent as people screamed and scattered through the fiery blasts. Panic spread like a contagion, and the carnival visitors and pedestrians looked up at the laughing green demon in the sky, unable to stop despair from taking hold.
Who was going to save them?
Sean saw that Peter, who had been taking pictures in the crowd just moments ago, had disappeared, and a faint smile appeared on his lips. He would leave the job of saving New York's citizens to Spider-Man. He watched the Green Goblin fly to the edge of the hotel rooftop and kill two major shareholders of Osborn Industries with Pumpkin Bombs right in front of Harry and his girlfriend. Fortunately, Norman had not completely lost his mind and did not hurt his son.
"Watch out!"
Sean had intended to quietly watch the battle and had no plans to become some heroic good Samaritan, but then he caught sight of a familiar figure from the corner of his eye. The collapsing stage had tugged loose a secured steel frame, which was about to crush her fragile body.
With a long sigh, Sean pushed off the ground and shot forward like an arrow, rescuing the terrified girl at incredible speed. With a boom, the steel frame crashed heavily to the ground, kicking up a cloud of dust.
Feeling the soft body in his arms trembling, Sean could only comfort her softly. "It's all right. You're safe now."
The girl in his arms tightly gripped the hand of her savior. When she looked up, she was surprised to discover that he was someone she knew. "Sean... why are you here?"
"A friend invited me. I just didn't expect something like this to happen..." Sean explained. "Gwen, I'll get you out of here first."
This girl was Gwen Stacy, Sean's university classmate. They had both worked as interns in Dr. Connors's laboratory, and they were fairly familiar friends.
"It's dangerous here." Sean looked up. Spider-Man, whom he had been waiting for, had finally appeared. Peter, making his first official appearance, continuously fired webs as he swung and leaped between the towering buildings.
The Green Goblin seemed to have noticed this annoying pest as well. With a piercing laugh, he controlled his glider and dived downward. Having just snuffed out two lives, the violent urges in his heart swelled even further. It was as though a voice kept shouting in his ear, urging him to destroy and annihilate even more crazily.
"Hey, Spider-Man?"
Several Pumpkin Bombs flew toward Spider-Man. The powerful shockwaves blasted Peter out of the air and slammed him heavily against the wall of a building.
"Do you like my gift? Hahahaha, Spider-Man!"
The Green Goblin activated the miniature machine guns mounted on his glider, unleashing a dense storm of bullets at Spider-Man. In an instant, the hard wall was riddled with holes. Peter kept firing webs, using the balloons and streamers floating in the sky to evade the barrage. When the Green Goblin let his guard down, Peter fired a web that stuck to the Bat Glider beneath his feet, immediately causing it to lose control and hurl the Green Goblin out of the air.
"Come on, taste this!"
Spider-Man pressed his advantage, spraying webs into a spring and launching himself with both feet. He struck the Green Goblin like a cannonball, then knocked the culprit behind the carnival's destruction to the ground with a flurry of punches and kicks.
The Green Goblin, who had rolled onto the ground, refused to be outdone. He lifted a huge cylinder and knocked Spider-Man, who was in midair, flying into a car. The two fought fiercely and evenly. Spider-Man was agile, while the Green Goblin possessed high-tech equipment. Their combat strength was roughly equal, and neither could gain the upper hand for the moment.
Sean brought the frightened Gwen to a safe area when he suddenly heard a scream. Looking toward the sound, he saw Harry and Mary Jane trapped on a balcony. They kept calling for help, but no one paid them any attention.
Spider-Man had originally seen the goddess he secretly loved in danger and desperately wanted to rush over to save her, but the Green Goblin had him tied down. Because he was distracted, his opponent seized the opportunity to rain punches and kicks on him, and he quickly fell into a disadvantage.
Fire from the explosions surged out of the hotel. The balcony where Harry and Mary Jane stood was on the verge of collapse and could break away at any moment. The two huddled in a corner, praying that someone would come help them.
I'm even busier than a superhero... Sean silently complained to himself, then turned to Gwen. "I have friends over there. Stay here and wait for the police."
Gwen clutched the men's suit jacket draped over her with both hands and silently watched Sean's departing back, her heart fluttering. Explosive flames and thick smoke filled the carnival grounds, while the green demon and Spider-Man battled fiercely. Even at such a dangerous moment, this young man still thought about his friends. She could not help feeling both admiration and a touch of emotion.
Sean, running at full speed, had no idea Gwen had already imagined him as a brave and fearless hero. Whether out of concern for his own interests or the moral line deep in his heart, he could not simply stand by and watch Harry live or die. Besides, doing a good deed now and then could count as building up some good karma.
While thinking, Sean rushed into the chaotic hotel. The elevators had stopped running, so he could only sprint up the stairs. Just as Mindy had said, he possessed extraordinary physical abilities. In only a few minutes, he had reached the balcony on the hotel's top floor—yet such intense exertion was no different from taking a stroll for him.
"Harry! Mary Jane!"
Sean saw that the two were in grave danger, especially Mary Jane. Half her body was already hanging in midair, concrete continued to peel away from the balcony, and the cracks in the wall kept widening. They could fall at any moment.
"Come on, grab my hand!" Sean pulled Harry over first, then reached out his hand to Mary Jane.
The red-haired girl trembled all over, tears still on her face. The Green Goblin had frightened her terribly earlier. Clutching the warm hand extended toward her, she threw herself into Sean's arms.
After successfully saving them both, Sean calmly pushed Mary Jane away and led the pair out of the hotel, away from the center of the battle. They had witnessed the Green Goblin kill two major shareholders of Osborn Industries with their own eyes, and the shock had deeply shaken them. They needed time to calm down.
"It's all right, Harry. It's all over now." Sean comforted the emotionally unstable Young Master Osborn.
At that moment, Harry seemed to remember something. He hurriedly took out his phone and called his father, but no one answered.
"I need to go home first, Sean. Help me take Mary Jane home!" Harry remembered that he had invited his father to the carnival, and now that such a horrific attack had taken place, he was worried.
Sean nodded helplessly. Looking at Gwen and Mary Jane, he silently said to himself, What is this? One is Green Goblin II's girlfriend, and the other is Spider-Man's first love. Why were they both dumped on me?!
"What a terrible day!"
Filled with deep frustration, Sean hailed a taxi and sent the two frightened girls home separately.
