Background / History

Abandoned by Konoha and the Uchiha

Mikoto grew up in Konoha as an orphan of the Uchiha Clan and attended the Ninja Academy. Because her talent appeared mediocre, her clan considered her expendable. They sent her to probe the visiting Kumogakure prodigy Yeyue Ziyun, partly to test how Konoha’s leadership would respond if an Uchiha caused an incident 11 14.

Her genjutsu caught Dodai but failed against Ziyun, who restrained her. She claimed she had merely chosen a random target to test a newly developed technique. Ziyun answered by proposing to test a potentially lethal ninjutsu on her 10 11.

Neither Hiruzen Sarutobi nor the Uchiha Clan Head would take responsibility for protecting her. Recognizing that both were using her as a political pawn, Mikoto volunteered to face Ziyun’s condition herself. She subsequently declared that she no longer had a place in either Konoha or her clan and sought out Kushina, her only friend in the village 12.

Assassination Attempt and Escape

Ziyun’s test proved harmless: he wanted to determine whether her Sharingan could follow his speed. Afterward, Mikoto became his guide around Konoha. During their outings, he taught her Fire Release, and she began developing romantic feelings for him. Despite her disillusionment, attachment to her childhood home and Kushina initially kept her from leaving 13 14.

An Anbu assassination attempt ended that hesitation. Ziyun intercepted the assassin and explained that Konoha’s leaders intended to frame him for her murder. Mikoto believed him and agreed to move to Kumogakure. To expose the plot, Ziyun substituted a transformed lightning shadow clone for her corpse and reported her supposed death 15.

When Konoha publicly accused Ziyun of killing her, Mikoto appeared at the tournament and described the assassination attempt. She displayed her Sharingan to refute claims that she was an impostor, then awakened its three-tomoe form. Konoha’s leadership nevertheless ordered an attack. The Third Raikage held off their forces while Dodai led the others away, and Ziyun escorted Mikoto and Kushina to the Land of Lightning 20 21.

Building a Life in Kumogakure

Mikoto and Kushina moved into the Yeyue Clan compound, where they received a warm welcome. Mikoto’s attachment to Konoha had turned to hatred; she openly welcomed news that Ziyun had damaged the village 24.

She wanted to fight for her new home, but Ziyun initially refused because she could not yet protect herself against Konoha’s stronger ninja. He supplied Fire Release scrolls and promised to help her grow stronger. When Kumogakure faced an alliance of four enemy villages, he returned specifically to awaken her Mangekyō Sharingan and bring her to the front as a hidden reinforcement 30 53 54.

Mikoto subsequently accompanied Ziyun on his raids against the allied villages. At Iwagakure, she controlled the released Four-Tails and rapidly learned to make it fire a Tailed Beast Bomb. She later departed Sunagakure with Ziyun after the Third Kazekage agreed to withdraw from the alliance 59 60 62.

Command and the Third Shinobi World War

After Ziyun became Fourth Raikage, Mikoto and Kushina handled his documents while he trained. His relationship with Mikoto became openly affectionate, and he later took her on a week-long honeymoon after his involvement with Tsunade upset her 70 85.

Before the Third Shinobi World War, Ziyun appointed Mikoto, Kushina, and Tsunade as Kumogakure’s three commanders-in-chief. Mikoto led the advance against Konoha in the Land of Hot Water and drove off its five-thousand-strong force. She declined to pursue the fleeing elite ninja alone because doing so would separate her from Kumogakure’s main army 88 92 93.

When Konoha deployed the Nine-Tails, Mikoto fought beside Kushina, restrained the beast, and ultimately placed it under her own ocular control. She then turned it against Konoha’s retreating forces 101 102 103.

During later negotiations over military aid, Mikoto demanded the surrender of the Uchiha Clan Head and Grand Elder. Her demand combined revenge against the former with the removal of the latter’s Mangekyō Sharingan as a threat to Kumogakure. She also defeated Rasa’s attacking force, seriously injuring him and forcing Sunagakure to retreat 109 111.

Administration and Reconciliation

Mikoto accompanied Ziyun, Kushina, and Tsunade to Konoha for the Five Kage peace talks. Ziyun later entrusted her with Konan’s Explosive Tag business, naming Tsunade and Kushina as her deputies 115 120.

When the Uchiha Clan relocated to Kumogakure, its members initially feared her retaliation. Mikoto approached them on her own initiative and clarified that her grudge concerned only their former leaders. Her welcome reassured the clan and helped it settle into its new home 131.

Battles Against the Ōtsutsuki

Mikoto supported Ziyun’s plan to unify the Shinobi World. During Madara’s Infinite Tsukuyomi, she sheltered Tsunade, Mei Terumi, Kushina, and the others inside Perfect Susanoo, preventing them from being affected 152 161 166.

Although she protected the group, being unable to assist directly against Kaguya frustrated her. After Ziyun upgraded her eyes to the Rinnegan, she immediately sought a place to train so she could contribute to future battles 166.

She insisted on accompanying him against Kara and witnessed his victory over Isshiki. Afterward, she acknowledged that Isshiki would have been a difficult opponent for her alone. Ziyun’s explanation that more Ōtsutsuki would come from beyond their planet profoundly shook her understanding of the world 167 168.

Appearance

Mikoto is introduced with features resembling a young Uchiha Sasuke, softened by a gentle expression and the bearing of a quiet young lady 9.

Personality

Mikoto is gentle, considerate, and initially lacks the pride associated with her clan. Even after losing interest in attending the Academy herself, she tries to keep Kushina from abandoning school because of her. Ziyun also values her cooking and ability to keep a household orderly 11 14 30 62.

Her gentleness does not prevent lasting resentment. Being treated as expendable leaves her deeply hostile toward Konoha and its former Uchiha leaders. However, she distinguishes their responsibility from that of ordinary clanspeople and willingly welcomes the Uchiha into Kumogakure 24 109 131.

She is attentive to Ziyun’s reputation, hesitating to make personal revenge a condition of official negotiations. On the battlefield, she shows more restraint than Kushina: she warns her friend not to treat war as a competition and refuses to outrun the support of her own army 93 109.

Mikoto repeatedly seeks the strength to contribute rather than remain protected. She volunteers for war while still comparatively weak and, after witnessing Kaguya’s battle, eagerly trains her Rinnegan to avoid being left on the sidelines again 30 53 166.
