Background / History

Luffy grew up alongside Ace and became sworn brothers with both Ace and Sabo. His family connects him to opposing world powers: Garp is a Marine hero, while his father, Dragon, leads the Revolutionary Army 99 127.

Shanks guided Luffy toward piracy, and Luffy wears a straw hat that Whitebeard recognizes as Roger’s. Beckman later reveals that Shanks also arranged prospective companions to support Luffy’s growth, including Yasopp’s son. Lin Yuan’s involvement disrupted those plans 99 325.

When Lin Yuan first observes Luffy near Foosha Village, Luffy is following Ace. Lin Yuan identifies him to Whitebeard as a future Pirate King and reveals the true identity of his Devil Fruit. Whitebeard subsequently tests the boys with Conqueror’s Haki; Luffy loses consciousness, while Ace awakens his own Conqueror’s Haki protecting him. After Ace leaves with Whitebeard and Lin Yuan, Garp remains with Luffy 98 99 102 106.

Appearance

Luffy is a little over 170 centimeters tall when he reunites with Ace in Alabasta 225.

• Straw hat: His defining accessory; he often pulls it over his eyes while making an important decision 99 216 331.
• Steam transformation: His skin becomes bright red and releases large amounts of steam 226.

Personality

Luffy is fiercely committed to becoming Pirate King and reacts badly when others dismiss that ambition. Even Ace’s warnings provoke him into demanding a fight. His confidence often exceeds his understanding of the opposition: he initially wants to confront Lin Yuan immediately and later charges Kaido without waiting for his crew 216 225 363.

He can nevertheless accept his companions’ judgment. When Molly points out that even Garp could not defeat Lin Yuan, Luffy agrees to train rather than seek immediate revenge. After the crew’s year of training, he also accepts their decision to leave the deserted island and resume sailing 216 331.

His attachment to his companions overrides personal grudges. Once he knows Garp is alive, he abandons his hatred of Lin Yuan; learning that Zoro has joined the attack on the World Government sends him rushing to Mary Geoise. He also becomes enraged when Saturn and Long Liu kill their own CP0 subordinates 395 427.

Food, especially meat, regularly distracts him. He eats the crew’s last two pigs, quickly forgets his distress when Sanji serves a meal, and causes an island-wide pursuit after taking a restaurant’s meat without paying 331 335 342.

Human-Human Fruit, Model: Nika

Luffy’s apparently rubber-based Gum-Gum Fruit is actually a Mythical Zoan formerly used by Joy Boy eight hundred years earlier. Its awakened state is also called the Sun God form 99.

• Elastic body: Stretches his limbs for punches, restraints, and propulsion. Gum-Gum Slingshot launches both himself and his companions onto enemy ships 226 332 374.
• Inflation and enlargement: Enlarges individual limbs for heavy attacks and, after awakening, his entire body 370 375.
• Sea vulnerability: His crew specifically treats falling into the sea as a serious danger to him 332.

Gear Fourth

Luffy uses “Muscle Balloon” by blowing air into a Haki-coated arm and compressing it into his body. The resulting form combines enlarged muscles with powerful elasticity 370.

• Physical enhancement: Faster than Gear Second and stronger and tougher than Gear Third 370.
• Aerial movement: Uses elasticity to fly; Boundman moves by bouncing rather than standing normally 370.
• Rebounding attacks: Retracts and releases his fists for attacks such as Lion Bazooka and King Kong Gun 370.
• Changing trajectories: Black Mamba alters direction during an attack, requiring Kaido to track it with Observation Haki 371.

Nika Awakening / Gear Fifth

Awakening gives Luffy both environmental rubberization resembling an awakened Paramecia and the vitality and recovery of an awakened Zoan. His heartbeat produces the Drums of Liberation 374.

• Environmental rubberization: Turns the ground into rubber for barriers, unstable footing, and attacks from below. He also rubberizes Nusjuro’s green fog 374 428.
• Freely changing anatomy: Twists into exaggerated shapes, coils around opponents, and uses his limbs like ropes 374 428.
• Cartoon-like effects: Produces exaggerated visual changes, including eyes popping out, that can affect observers as well as combatants 374.
• Giant transformation: Reaches almost a thousand meters during the Kaido battle; later adjusts between roughly six, one hundred, and two hundred meters against Nusjuro 375 429.
• Lightning handling: Catches lightning overhead and throws it as Gum-Gum Lightning 375.

Garp repeatedly pushes Luffy to the brink of death during training. This conditioning, combined with his fruit’s resilience, allows him to withstand prolonged punishment in Gear Fourth 327 371.

• Sustained fighting: Battles Kaido in his awakened form for half a day before noticeably weakening 374.
• Improvised grappling: Binds and throws Nusjuro, rides his skeletal horse form, and swings him into the ground 428 429.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Revenge Plans and the Alabasta Defeat

Reports of Garp’s defeat convince Luffy that Lin Yuan killed his grandfather. His insistence on immediate revenge nearly splits the crew, but he ultimately agrees to train for two years. Zoro makes defeating an Emperor a prerequisite to accompanying him against Lin Yuan 216 224.

Luffy rises to second among the twelve Supernovas, with Zoro ranked sixth. Their growing reputation and early Haki awakenings encourage an inflated assessment of their strength. In Alabasta, Ace challenges that confidence by defeating Luffy and nearly the entire crew, sparing only Molly. Luffy responds by vowing to surpass his brother 224 225 226 227.

Garp’s Hidden Training

Garp bargains with Lin Yuan for a year away to guide Luffy, agreeing to teach at the Abyss first and conceal his identity while traveling. As a masked, cloaked instructor, he forces the Straw Hats into brutal combat and Haki training without Luffy recognizing him 258 274.

The year brings Luffy to Admiral-level strength. After recovering from their injuries, the crew resumes its voyage, raids a Heavenly Tribute convoy to support Fisher and Higgins’s revenge, and accepts Lawrence aboard 327 331 332 334.

Confrontation with Lin Yuan

On an Abyss-controlled island, Luffy’s unpaid restaurant meal escalates into a pursuit involving residents and guards. The crew’s rampage causes widespread disorder, though they refrain from killing anyone 342 343.

Luffy later challenges Lin Yuan directly. Despite entering Gear Fourth, he is defeated instantly when Lin Yuan stops time and punches him unconscious, demonstrating that his new Admiral-level strength is still insufficient 354 356.

Onigashima and Nika’s Awakening

Luffy attacks Kaido intending to claim an Emperor’s position, unaware that Lin Yuan has arranged for Kaido to withdraw and hopes the battle will force Nika’s awakening. Kaido immediately knocks him unconscious with Thunder Bagua, leaving the remaining Straw Hats to fight his forces 360 361 362 363.

After returning to battle, Luffy uses Ryuo and Gear Fourth to pressure Kaido, but cannot overcome his experience and stamina. A later near-fatal attack precedes the Drums of Liberation and Luffy’s Nika awakening. The transformation lets him fight Kaido head-on, rubberize the battlefield, become a giant, and wield lightning 370 371 373 374 375.

The Straw Hats subsequently receive public credit for defeating Kaido and rising among the Five Emperors. Kaido survives and takes his crew toward Lin Yuan’s secret base 379 406.

Egghead and the World Government

The World Government regards Luffy’s fruit as a potential threat to Imu. Imu considers him a possible reincarnation of Joy Boy, but Lin Yuan does not confirm that interpretation 270 361 386 387.

At Egghead, Luffy fights Saturn and Long Liu in Nika form, then faces Borsalino’s intervention. Garp and Abyss fighters arrive to help, revealing to Luffy that his grandfather is alive. Luffy subsequently joins Garp against Saturn 395 396 397 399.

Becoming Pirate King

Molly discovers the chart to Laugh Tale on Onigashima, and Luffy orders the crew to sail for the final island. Following her advice to avoid resupply stops, they shorten the expected three-month voyage by a month 379 406.

Luffy is the first of his crew to step onto Laugh Tale and celebrates achieving his lifelong dream. Morgans records the arrival, while the Abyss’s information networks spread the news worldwide that Luffy has become Pirate King. The publicity also serves Lin Yuan’s effort to divert the World Government’s attention 406.

Rescuing Zoro at Mary Geoise

After Zoro leaves to pursue his own ambition, Luffy learns that he has joined Lin Yuan’s attack on the World Government. With his grievance against Lin Yuan resolved, Luffy rushes to Mary Geoise and intercepts Nusjuro’s attack on Zoro 407 427.

Nusjuro repeatedly overpowers Luffy’s Gear Fourth. When Zoro’s sword breaks and he suffers another chest wound, Luffy enters Nika form and turns the fight around with elastic restraints, rubberized terrain, and giant transformations. These attacks frustrate Nusjuro but inflict limited lasting damage because of his immortal body. Luffy remains engaged as Mihawk arrives and joins the assault 428 429 430.
