Background / History

Rocks Pirates and Rise to Emperor

Newgate once served under Rocks alongside Kaido, Charlotte Linlin, and Golden Lion Shiki. He survived the defeat at God Valley, where the World Government deployed nearly ten Admiral-level fighters in addition to Roger and Garp. Witnessing that strength left him deeply aware of the danger of challenging the Celestial Dragons 85 92 194.

During his later career, Marine expeditions against him repeatedly ended in defeat; both Sengoku and Zephyr suffered at his hands. Because he was extraordinarily powerful but chiefly interested in gathering sons and living with his crew, the Marines and World Government eventually adopted a policy of leaving him alone. After Roger's death, they granted him the title of Emperor of the Sea, and he became the first of the Four Emperors 85 103.

Despite his territories, Newgate had little spare money. Feeding his crew and secretly supporting his hometown consumed much of his income. He also refused to exhaust his territories through excessive extraction, recognizing that such income would not last 76.

Partnership with the Abyss Chamber of Commerce

Erza approached Newgate with three cargo ships carrying spirits and daily necessities. Her composure and the chamber's history of defeating powerful pirates led him to suspect that an Emperor-level figure stood behind the organization 75 85.

Their commercial partnership brought the Whitebeard Pirates 3.5 billion Beli over a year. Newgate publicly declared the chamber a friend and sent six division commanders, including Marco, to help punish forces attacking its trade routes. As his old injuries worsened, he asked Erza to arrange a meeting with its hidden leader 85.

Before meeting Lin Yuan, Newgate sealed his territories and cleared his headquarters of outside crews to protect his visitor's secrecy. Their discussions became confrontational when Lin Yuan criticized his overprotection of his sons and questioned what would happen to them after his death. Their subsequent duel wounded both men, but their rivalry developed into a brotherly friendship 86 88 89 90 92.

Taking Ace into the Family

Lin Yuan warned Newgate that Teach was Rocks's son and might betray the crew to obtain the Dark-Dark Fruit and eventually steal his Tremor-Tremor Fruit. Newgate refused to punish Teach for crimes he had not yet committed, though he resolved to watch him. He also agreed to fight for Lin Yuan three times in exchange for help finding a prospective son with Conqueror's Haki 92 93.

That prospect was Roger's son, Ace. Newgate traveled to East Blue, tested Ace's Haki, and was delighted when the boy resisted him to protect Luffy. When Garp attacked, Newgate withdrew with both children rather than risk killing them in the resulting clash 100 102 103.

Newgate offered Ace a family, personal instruction, and the possibility of eventually inheriting the Whitebeard Pirates. After Ace joined and ate the Flame-Flame Fruit, Newgate taught him physical conditioning, Haki, and combat techniques while Lin Yuan explained fruit development 107 108 109.

Treatment and Securing His Crew's Future

Two years after their earlier meeting, Newgate welcomed Lin Yuan back with a weapon clash that aggravated his hidden injuries. Lin Yuan brought Kureha to treat him. During these events, Teach defected, confirming part of Lin Yuan's warning 162 163 164.

Kureha substantially improved Newgate's condition but warned that continued use of the Tremor-Tremor Fruit could create further damage. Lin Yuan then supplied a Pure Gold band. At the banquet celebrating his recovery, Newgate reorganized his forty-three allied crews: weaker members could return to their families, while willing fighters could remain under his protection and share island income if they stopped raiding. Lin Yuan promised to continue protecting them after Newgate's death 166 167.

Marineford Rescue

Newgate participated in Lin Yuan's plan surrounding Ace's pursuit of Blackbeard. He assured Ace that the confrontation was a chance to test himself—and that, if he lost, Newgate and Lin Yuan would rescue him from the Marines 223 224.

At Ace's execution, Newgate appeared inside Marineford with more than a hundred cloaked, masked allies. He demanded Ace's release, intercepted gunfire with Air Quake, raised a tsunami with Seaquake, and coordinated a mass Conqueror's Haki attack with Yamato and Katakuri 238 239.

When Blackbeard attempted to seize his fruit, Newgate nearly killed him with a Conqueror's Haki-coated punch. Blackbeard's second fruit and regeneration prolonged the battle, forcing Newgate to rely on Haki and swordsmanship. With Mihawk's assistance, he overwhelmed Teach and eventually beheaded him, believing him dead 242 243 244 245 246 247.

Newgate subsequently demanded that the Marines stop pursuing Ace and leave the assisting Shichibukai alone for two years; Sengoku accepted. He later learned that Blackbeard had survived the beheading and attempted to escape before Lin Yuan dealt with him 249 257.

Alliance and War Against the World Government

Newgate became one of the legendary fighters serving under Lin Yuan. He helped suppress fighting in Elbaf, clashing with Loki, and his crew was later publicly named among the pirate forces fully allied with the Abyss Chamber of Commerce 286 291 384.

On the Red Line, Newgate opened the wider battle by warping the battlefield and scattering the assembled powerhouses. He held off three opponents without falling into disadvantage. Once Redfield joined him, Newgate unleashed Murakumogiri's hundredfold weight enhancement and killed two Admiral-level enemies before moving on to seek further opponents 424 435.

Personality

Newgate places family above prestige or wealth. Praise for his sons pleases him more than praise for himself, and Ace's willingness to protect Luffy immediately wins his approval. His attachment can become overprotectiveness: Lin Yuan argues that his sons' absolute faith in him has deprived them of the urgency needed to reach their potential 76 88 90 102.

His loyalty is not unconditional forgiveness. He initially refuses to harm Teach based on predictions, considering him a beloved son until betrayal actually occurs. Once Teach harms his brothers, Newgate rejects his pleas for mercy, although he still feels sorrow after apparently killing him 93 242 243 247.

Newgate is perceptive beneath his boisterous manner. He deduces the existence of the chamber's hidden powerhouse from Erza's behavior and recognizes the strategic implications of Lin Yuan's conversation with Dragon. His pride also becomes more flexible after joining Lin Yuan: he accepts Mihawk's help against Blackbeard rather than insisting on a solitary victory 85 102 245.
