| Developing martial foundation | 12 | Gains some mastery of the Stone-Shattering Fist in just over half a month. Xuanyangzi recognizes his exceptional Root Bone and comprehension, accepts him as a personal disciple, and takes him to train on the back mountain. |
| Ninth Grade | 19 | Newly entered the rank after roughly a month of transformation. Can kill ordinary bandits with swift sword strikes, but his limited internal force and accumulated wounds leave him vulnerable to encirclement. |
| Eighth Rank | 26 28 | Reaches the rank in less than three months from an ordinary, physically weak starting point. Reports credit him with frightening off a Seventh Rank expert using Sword Qi; his rank is subsequently confirmed in his duel with Chen Fan. |
Background / History
Famine and Temple Servitude
Zhang Shan lost both parents to starvation during a famine two years before meeting Chen Fan. Facing starvation himself, he sold himself to Azure Yang Temple as a menial servant. His life there involved communal sleeping quarters, fetching water and chopping firewood before dawn, and enduring abuse from Wang Chong and other disciples 11.
Chen Fan, then possessing Zhao Long’s body, encountered Wang Chong’s group beating Zhang Shan. After forcing the bullies to submit through Zhao Long’s political influence, he helped Zhang Shan up and publicly declared him his underling. Zhang Shan subsequently moved into the Listening to Bamboo Pavilion, where he handled washing, cooking, cleaning, and tea service under Chen Fan’s protection 10 11.
Becoming Xuanyangzi’s Disciple
Zhang Shan began secretly practicing the Stone-Shattering Fist from manuals Chen Fan had discarded. Rather than punish him, Chen Fan corrected his stance and occasionally offered further guidance. Zhang Shan devoted his spare time to practice, progressed rapidly, and received the temple’s best breathing method from his benefactor 11.
His progress attracted Xuanyangzi, the temple master, who examined his meridians and judged him a once-in-a-century prodigy with the potential to reach the Grandmaster realm. Zhang Shan nevertheless refused to leave Chen Fan’s service without permission. Once Chen Fan agreed, he formally became Xuanyangzi’s disciple and moved to the master’s secluded quarters on the back mountain 12.
First Revenge Campaign
After Zhao Long’s death, Zhang Shan descended the mountain to kill Black Wind Baleful Intent. Unbeknownst to him, Chen Fan had survived by possessing the bandit chief’s body, making his intended enemy the same person who had protected and taught him 13 18.
Zhang Shan killed three scouts with one sword strike and continued attacking bandits around Black Wind Mountain. His raids made the bandits afraid to travel alone, but Iron-Armed Monkey eventually trapped him with nearly thirty men. Already wounded and only newly at Ninth Grade, Zhang Shan was close to death when Chen Fan intervened and dismissed the attackers 18 19.
Questioned about Zhao Long’s notorious reputation, Zhang Shan insisted that he owed his benefactor his life regardless of what others thought of him. Chen Fan let him leave with the words, “I only seek a clear conscience.” Zhang Shan recognized the expression as something Zhao Long had also said, but convinced himself that the resemblance was coincidental and returned toward Azure Yang Temple 19 20.
Return to Black Wind Mountain
After reaching Eighth Rank, Zhang Shan returned alone to challenge Black Wind Baleful Intent. He accused the chief of both murdering Zhao Long and slaughtering Zhang Household Village; the passage does not establish Zhang Shan’s connection to that village 26 28.
The two exchanged a hundred moves without a clear advantage. Chen Fan then deliberately exposed an opening, lured Zhang Shan into attacking, and struck his chest with the spine of his saber. Defeated and unable to continue, Zhang Shan asked to be killed, but Chen Fan spared him again and warned him not to return 28.
Chen Fan’s restraint was intended to protect him: if Zhang Shan killed Chen Fan, Death-Substitution Rebirth would take over Zhang Shan’s body and end his life. His rapid growth consequently pushed Chen Fan to consider changing identities before their next encounter 26 28.
Appearance
Zhang Shan initially appears severely underfed, with faded Daoist robes and bruises left by his tormentors. Training gives him increasingly defined muscles, and by his later return to Black Wind Mountain he stands straight and tall, with refined features and the bearing of a drawn sword 11 12 28.
- Clothing: Cyan or blue-green Daoist robes 19 28.
- Weapon: An ancient-looking longsword carried on his back 28.
- Eyes: Bright and clear, displaying fearlessness during his first encirclement and intense hatred when confronting his perceived enemy 19 28.
Personality
Initially timid and easily frightened, Zhang Shan becomes a diligent attendant once given safety and shelter. He keeps the pavilion orderly and spends every available moment training. Although others emphasize his extraordinary aptitude, he attributes his progress to hard work and remembers Zhao Long’s teaching that genius is ninety percent effort and ten percent talent 11 19.
Gratitude governs his decisions. He will not accept Xuanyangzi’s offer without his benefactor’s permission, and Zhao Long’s public reputation does not diminish his determination to repay the kindness he personally received. That loyalty develops into an obsessive pursuit of revenge, with his later sword attacks aimed at mutual destruction rather than self-preservation 12 19 28.
Abilities & Skills
Martial Aptitude
Xuanyangzi praises both Zhang Shan’s Root Bone and comprehension, identifying him as a potential future Grandmaster rather than an already accomplished one 12.
- Grasps corrections immediately and applies them beyond the specific instruction given 11.
- Advances from an untrained servant to Eighth Rank in less than three months 26.
- Remains less firmly established at Eighth Rank than the veteran Black Wind Baleful Intent, whose strength drives him back during their opening clash 28.
Stone-Shattering Fist
His first documented martial technique, learned through manual study and Chen Fan’s informal guidance 11.
- Develops a stable stance and forceful punches after an initially clumsy start 11.
- Makes a hundred-jin stone weight sway violently as his training progresses 12.
Swordsmanship and Footwork
Zhang Shan combines swift sword attacks with elusive movement, exploiting narrow openings rather than meeting heavier weapons directly 19 28.
- Kills multiple ordinary bandits with precise, rapid strikes 18 19.
- Uses profound footwork to weave through Chen Fan’s sweeping saber attacks 28.
- Blends Azure Yang Temple’s upright swordsmanship with relentless killing intent 28.
- Is reported to have driven off a Seventh Rank expert with Sword Qi at Yuelai Inn; the incident is relayed by a scout rather than directly depicted 26.
- Can be baited into overcommitting: Chen Fan defeats him through a feigned opening 28.
Relationships
- Chen Fan / Zhao Long — Protector and first martial guide. Zhang Shan knows him as Zhao Long and considers his rescue, shelter, and cultivation method a life-debt 10 11 19.
- Daoist Xuanyangzi — Formal master. Recognizes his potential and personally takes charge of his training 12.
- Black Wind Baleful Intent — Intended target of revenge. Zhang Shan does not know that Chen Fan now inhabits the chief’s body and is confused by being spared twice 19 20 28.
- Wang Chong — Former tormentor whose beating prompts Chen Fan to intervene 10 11.
- Iron-Armed Monkey — Bandit enemy who directs the hunt for Zhang Shan and nearly kills him with a throwing knife during his encirclement 19.
- Parents — Both died of starvation during a famine 11.
