Background / History

Yu Tianming belonged to the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan and was a direct descendant before leaving it. In his youth, he traveled with Cang Lin, who later became a deputy hall master of Spirit Hall in Heaven Dou Imperial City 51 72.

His family was devastated by a conflict involving Yu Xiaogang and Pope Qian Xunji. According to Yu Tianming, Yu Xiaogang falsely invoked the clan head’s orders and mobilized clan forces over a romantic dispute. The resulting battle killed Yu Tianming’s wife and children, gravely injured him, and devastated his branch of the clan. Yu Xiaogang subsequently admitted that he had harmed Yu Tianming’s family 12.

Yu Tianming left the clan with a Swift Fire Steed as his surviving companion. After recovering his strength, he intended to return someday, and Xiao Yan offered to accompany him when he became stronger 20.

Despite his losses, Yu Tianming distinguished Spirit Hall from its former Pope. He regarded the conflict as the responsibility of Qian Xunji and Yu Xiaogang rather than the institution itself, and later served in Spirit Hall’s Nuoding City branch 35.

Personality

Yu Tianming is fiercely loyal to those he considers family. He accepts the much younger Xiao Yan as his elder brother after the boy gives him hope of recovery and revenge, and later refuses to accept that Xiao Yan has died. His protectiveness extends to Yu Xin: he rushes to her aid during her confrontation with Ning Rongrong and threatens Xue Can against mistreating her 6 36 72.

Although usually steady, he is blunt, profane, and quick to anger when loved ones are threatened. With Xiao Yan, this becomes affectionate teasing and banter; against Yu Xiaogang, it becomes open contempt backed by violence 12 22 35.

He places fairness above clan loyalty. When Yu Tianheng seeks revenge for Dugu Yan’s defeat, Yu Tianming defends Xiao Yan and rejects the idea that losing a fair contest justifies retaliation. His own past also makes him wary of pride and isolation, prompting him to warn Xiao Yan against believing individual strength is enough 35 49.

Recovery and the Nuoding Banquet

Yu Tianming trades medicinal ingredients, gold, and a Space Soul Tool for Xiao Yan’s Bone Spirit Cold Flame Child Flame crystal. Recognizing that it can save him and restore his strength, he insists on becoming Xiao Yan’s younger sworn brother 6.

At the banquet celebrating his recovery, he intervenes when Yu Xiaogang insults Xiao Yan. He reveals the history behind their feud, prevents Yu Xiaogang from leaving, and punishes him with lightning. He deliberately spares his life while refusing to let him use Tang San to resolve their personal grudge 9 12 14.

Soul Ring Hunt and Poisoning

Yu Tianming promises to escort Xiao Yan on his first Soul Ring hunt. Before departing, the two investigate the returned Nuoding city lord’s suspicious behavior and connect him to the Emperor Auspicious Beast. Yu Tianming warns Xiao Yan against trusting the proposed Water Qilin hunt 17 19.

In the Sunset Forest, pursuing a Man-Faced Demon Spider leads them to the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Spring. Yu Tianming disturbs the Jade Phosphor Seven Absolute Flower and suffers near-fatal poisoning despite activating his Martial Soul Avatar. Yao Lao, acting through Xiao Yan, preserves his heart with the Bone Spirit Cold Flame while Xiao Yan searches for a cure 20 21 22 23.

He later awakens with the blood clots in his meridians cleared. Initially mistaking Xiao Yan’s white-gold First Soul Ring for a ten-year ring, he fears the boy sacrificed his cultivation prospects to save him. Once Xiao Yan’s actual strength becomes apparent, Yu Tianming helps subdue Qiongqi for his Second Soul Ring 33 34.

Heaven Dou Imperial City

In the imperial city, Yu Tianming reunites with Cang Lin and Yu Xin. He intervenes in Yu Xin’s dispute with Ning Rongrong but ultimately leads his granddaughter away after Sword Douluo Chen Xin appears 35 36 37.

He advises Xiao Yan to gain practical experience in the intermediate Soul Master arena before attending Xue Qinghe’s competition. There, he stops Yu Tianheng from escalating his confrontation with Xiao Yan. He later accompanies Xiao Yan to the Crown Prince’s residence and watches his tournament victory 40 49 51 67.

Search for Xiao Yan

After the explosion at the Crown Prince’s residence, Yu Tianming rejects Xue Can’s offer to search for Xiao Yan’s body. Insisting that his sworn brother is alive, he leaves to find him himself, first warning Xue Can not to hurt Yu Xin 72.

Four years later, Xiao Yan learns that Yu Tianming left Heaven Dou Imperial City and has remained out of contact. Cang Lin believes Yu Xin’s approaching marriage to Emperor Xue Can may draw him back, even if only in secret 88.
