• Open the Gate of Darkness: The cult sought to establish a spatial passage to the Domain of Darkness, home of the Outer Realm Demons 17 19.
• Obtain dark power and dominion: Its master believed that opening the passage would grant the cult a blessing of dark power and enable it to subjugate the Great Thousand World 17.
• Serve the Lord of Darkness: The guardian dharma king identified the Lord of Darkness as the power behind the cult and anticipated his eventual descent 28.

History

Suppression and Survival

Years before Xiao Yan's encounter with the organization, the major powers joined forces to suppress the Blood Shadow Cult. It nearly disappeared, but concealed remnants survived. Elder Wang of Tianbei City's administration remembered the cult as a regional calamity responsible for the deaths of many cultivators 8 9.

Its surviving network included the Blood Shadow Hall in Northern Region City, which continued providing resources and intelligence 8.

Mist Forest and Tianbei City

Li Xuantong investigated cult activity in the Mist Forest, where members were searching for the Netherworld Flower and harvesting powerful beasts. He, Xiao Yan, and A Man pursued a wounded cultist, who crushed a bone talisman and detonated himself rather than be captured 8.

The cult subsequently attacked the Welcoming Guests Pavilion in Tianbei City. An Initial Origin Emperor protector led the assault and ordered Li Xuantong captured alive. Xiao Yan intervened, killed several attackers, and helped Li Xuantong wound the protector, forcing a retreat. Zhou Xiaotian then sealed the city and ordered a search for the infiltrators 10.

Investigators discovered that the cult also wanted a Space Fragment kept in the city lord's treasury. Li Xuantong suspected that it intended to repair a spatial passage and that its headquarters lay near Soul-Severing Cliff 10.

During the Northern Region Youth Strongest Expert List competition, Xiao Yan exposed the disguised Blood Butcher as a core disciple. Blood Butcher unleashed the forbidden Ten Thousand Souls Devour technique, but Xiao Yan destroyed its vengeful souls and burned him to death 14.

First Ritual at Soul-Severing Cliff

After the competition, intelligence placed the cult's main force at Soul-Severing Cliff. Li Xuantong, Xiao Yan, and fifty city lord's manor elites investigated and discovered an altar of black bones beneath the cliff. Hundreds of cultists were channeling Origin Qi into a stolen Space Fragment while the Cult Master opened a rift to the Domain of Darkness 16 17.

The ritual drained participating followers of their Origin Qi and life force, leaving dried corpses as the passage widened. A three-headed black python emerged from the rift during the investigators' attack. Xiao Yan destroyed it, seized the Space Fragment, and fled while gravely wounded. His black jade fragment reflected the Cult Master's pursuing attack and protected him 17.

Losing the fragment did not end the operation: the Cult Master continued expanding the rift at Soul-Severing Cliff 21.

Campaign in the Snow Region

According to Ling Xue, the cult invaded the Ice Spirit Clan's territory three months before her meeting with Xiao Yan. Its attackers killed the clan leader and elders, destroyed her home, and pursued her after she escaped. They intended to sacrifice her pure Ice Spirit Power as a key to opening the Gate of Darkness 22.

The cult also entered Frozen Canyon, a sacred Ice Spirit Clan site associated with a sealed ancient ice beast. Its objective there remained unknown; the expedition suffered heavy losses and withdrew empty-handed 23.

Xiao Yan rescued Ling Xue from cult pursuers and later defeated an Initial Origin Emperor protector accompanied by four Peak Origin Kings. Before being killed, the protector revealed that three thousand cultists were gathered at Soul-Severing Cliff and planned to open the gate in half a month using a Darkness Core 21 23.

Defeat at Soul-Severing Cliff

By Xiao Yan and Ling Xue's return, the cult had blockaded the area and constructed nine altars around a vastly enlarged rift. Dozens of captive cultivators were bound to each altar. The Cult Master used their sacrifices, the followers' Origin Qi, and the Darkness Core to stabilize the passage, supported by protectors and a Dark Envoy 24.

While Zhou Xiaotian's coalition fought the cult's defenders, Xiao Yan confronted the Cult Master and Dark Envoy, and Ling Xue worked to disrupt the altars. Xiao Yan used the Origin Stabilizing Divine Stone and Void Origin Stone Fragment to destroy the Darkness Core, erase the envoy, and close the rift 24 25.

The followers broke and fled, pursued by Zhou Xiaotian's forces. The Cult Master burned his own origin in a final attempt to kill Xiao Yan, but Ling Xue pierced his heart with an ice spear. The battle ended the immediate Northern Region crisis 25.

Remnants and Wider Connections

Li Xuantong recovered a black token from the Cult Master and gave it to Xiao Yan, who kept it as a possible means of tracing survivors. When activated, the Blood Soul Token manifested the guardian dharma king's remnant soul. Xiao Yan attacked it with Heavenly Flames, forcing it back into the token 25 28.

Old Freak Blood Fiend later acknowledged ties to the cult and disparaged its failure to protect the spatial rift. His use of dark energy led Mo Chen and Lin Qingxue to warn that the Lord of Darkness's forces were infiltrating the Great Thousand World despite the cult's defeat 33.

• Cult energy possesses corrosive properties capable of eroding Origin Qi and attacking the mind 14 23.
• The curse afflicting Ling Xue damaged her meridians and left black energy in her dantian that steadily consumed her vitality 22.
• Xiao Yan's Heavenly Flames repeatedly burned away and purified this energy, providing a direct counter to cult techniques 14 22 23.

Blood Shadow Divine Art

• Practiced by the Cult Master, this technique originated from a dark art of the Domain of Darkness and could draw upon demonic power 19.

Soul-Based Techniques

• Blood Soul Grand Art · Ten Thousand Souls Devour: A forbidden technique used by Blood Butcher to release a tide of resentful, corrosive souls against an opponent's body and soul 14.
• Blood Shadow Slash: A protector's technique that projected an enormous blade of black Qi from a curved weapon surrounded by vengeful souls 23.

Sacrificial Rituals

• Altars converted followers' Origin Qi, life force, flesh, and blood into power for opening the spatial passage 17.
• The later ritual used captive cultivators as sacrifices across nine altars, with the Darkness Core stabilizing the rift 24.
