- After Iwagakure’s defeat: Remains in cracked plaster and is fitted with an iron collar and chain by Konoha’s troops 119.
Personality
Ōnoki is proud of his office and quick to anger at perceived humiliation. When Shu Shiraishi returns Iwagakure’s protest letter covered in sewage and a boot print, he smashes a granite table and denounces Shu’s arrogance. He initially dismisses Konoha’s machinery, trusting the Land of Earth’s mountains and gorges to render its tanks and machine guns ineffective 66.
His resistance also takes a calculating, deceptive form. Rather than confront Konoha’s aircraft directly, he proposes attacking its stretched supply lines. Later, he organizes an assassination alliance and feigns submission during peace negotiations while coordinating an explosive trap through encrypted Chakra communication 88 101 103.
Fear does not immediately make him abandon Iwagakure. Although the nuclear test terrifies him, he rejects surrender once Shu demands national sovereignty. During the invasion, he forces himself into battle despite a broken back; witnessing Kitsuchi’s death drives him into a final, suicidal attack 99 101 114 115 118.
Abilities & Skills
Dust Release: Detachment of the Primitive World Technique
Ōnoki creates a translucent cubic barrier containing white light capable of breaking matter down into atoms 104.
- Offensive range: Can thrust the technique at a nearby opponent or expand it into a beam dozens of meters across. Rock touched by the beam disintegrates 104 115.
- Barrier application: Plans to use a Dust Release barrier as the outer layer of the summit’s sealed explosive trap 103.
- Chakra cost: His full-force attack on Konoha’s tanks exhausts him so severely that he nearly loses the ability to remain airborne 115.
- Counters: Shu’s Chakra-dampening glove shatters the technique at the summit. Orochimaru later coordinates linked inverse-frequency shields that protect Konoha’s tanks from it 105 115.
Earth Release and Weight Manipulation
Ōnoki uses Earth Release for flight, weight alteration, and physical attacks 66 114 118.
- Light-Weight Rock Technique: Lifts his cast-encased lower body from his wheelchair, allowing him to fly despite his spinal injury 114 115.
- Added-Weight Rock Technique: Turns himself and his wheelchair into a falling mass weighing ten thousand jin for an attack on Shu’s command vehicle 118.
- Chakra-reinforced strike: Coats his fist in earth-yellow Chakra and splits a foot-thick granite table 66.
- Physical limits: His preexisting back trouble flares after striking the table. Using Chakra through his later spinal injuries causes severe pain and renewed bleeding 66 114 115.
Reverse Hiding Like a Mole Technique
Ōnoki prepares an underground escape route beneath the Five Kage Summit venue 103.
- Intended to carry the three allied Kage underground immediately before their explosives detonate.
- Never used as planned: Shu exposes the conspiracy before the trap can be triggered 104 105.
Strategy and Covert Coordination
- Supply-line warfare: Identifies Konoha’s extended operations as a logistical weakness and proposes a combined sabotage force of three hundred Explosion Corps shinobi and two hundred Lightning Release specialists 88.
- Alliance building: Persuades rival village leaders to pool their strongest fighters and secret techniques against Shu 101.
- Encrypted communication: Uses a Chakra cipher scroll for remote conferences and covert Chakra transmission during the summit 101 103.
- Intelligence vulnerability: Konoha intercepts both his sabotage planning and the summit conspirators’ supposedly secret communications 87 88 104.
History
Early Career
In his youth, Ōnoki followed the Second Tsuchikage, Mu, and faced Madara Uchiha’s Susanoo. He later recalls that encounter when confronting Konoha’s mechanized army: Madara, however powerful, could tire and exhaust his Chakra, while machines could continue fighting as long as they had fuel and ammunition 114.
Economic Blockade and Border Defense
Ōnoki sends an envoy to protest Konoha’s blockade, which has cut off explosives and heavy machinery and disrupted Iwagakure’s mines. The envoy demands restored deliveries and compensation, but Shu humiliates him, breaks his leg, and sends him back with a threat to break Ōnoki’s back 65.
Enraged by the returned letter, Ōnoki argues that Iwagakure’s mountainous terrain will defeat Konoha’s heavy weapons. Mu advises sealing the border and holding the heights. Their reliance on mountain defenses prompts Shu to commission a rocket capable of striking the Tsuchikage Building from beyond the mountains 66.
Ōnoki also orders Han to retrieve Roshi after Roshi leaves Iwagakure. Konoha’s airships intercept and capture both jinchūriki 77.
Sabotage and Nuclear Deterrence
Following Konoha’s attacks on Sunagakure, Ōnoki coordinates with Acting Raikage Dodai to raid Konoha’s number two supply hub through an abandoned mining area. Konoha intercepts the conversation, and Shu orders three hundred heavy mechs deployed to trap the attackers 87 88.
Konoha’s subsequent nuclear test shatters Ōnoki’s Chakra-monitoring crystal. After seeing a photograph of the mushroom cloud, he recognizes that neither Dust Release nor Iwagakure’s mountains can protect the village from such a weapon. He cancels the sabotage operation and orders his troops to withdraw from the Land of Hot Water’s border 98 99 100.
Four-Nation Alliance and Summit Ambush
When Shu demands the Land of Earth’s sovereignty as the price of avoiding bombardment, Ōnoki organizes a Four-Nation Alliance with the Third Kazekage, Third Mizukage, and Dodai. Their plan is to lure Shu to a Five Kage Summit in the neutral Land of Iron and assassinate him 101.
Although Shu initially burns the invitation, he subsequently attends alone. Dodai is absent and authorizes Ōnoki to represent the Land of Lightning 101 102.
Ōnoki offers twelve high-grade hematite mines and fifty million ryō in reparations in exchange for a Nuclear Weapons Limitation Treaty. Behind these concessions, the conspirators prepare twelve thousand Explosive Tags, overlapping containment techniques, an underground escape passage, and poisoned tea intended to paralyze Shu’s Chakra pathways for three seconds 103.
Shu plays a recording of their covert discussion, exposing the entire plot. Ōnoki attacks with Dust Release, but Shu shatters it and strikes him through the ceiling. Left with a broken back, Ōnoki asks to be killed; Shu instead spares the Kage so they can witness their villages’ destruction 104 105.
Defense and Fall of Iwagakure
From his wheelchair, Ōnoki watches footage of the Land of Wind’s conquest. Soon afterward, Kitsuchi reports that Konoha’s tanks have crossed the Land of Earth’s border and destroyed its defenses in less than ten minutes 113 114.
Ōnoki flies out to attack the advancing formation, but linked inverse-frequency shields leave the tanks intact. He orders a retreat behind the Ten Thousand-Person Earth Style Wall. Konoha’s bunker-buster bombs destroy the barrier and kill or bury most of its defenders 115 116 117.
After Kitsuchi dies attempting to stop a tank, Ōnoki launches himself at Shu’s command vehicle using the Added-Weight Rock Technique. Shu intercepts him, slams him into the ground, and drives a knee into his already injured back, breaking his spine and leaving his lower body without sensation 118.
Following Iwagakure’s defeat, Konoha’s troops chain Ōnoki to an armored vehicle and drag him across the wasteland. He is subsequently placed in a slave-transport truck alongside the captured Daimyo of the Land of Earth 119.
