Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Temporary fusion with Black Zetsu 188 Black Zetsu spreads over Obito’s body, leaving intermittent black markings and providing a substantial power boost during the fight against Obito the Wanderer.
Black Zetsu replacement arm 270 274 After Sasuke severs Obito’s right arm, Black Zetsu becomes its replacement. The new arm considerably strengthens Obito’s Wood Release, allowing him to use a small-scale Cutting Technique.

Background / History

Obito was a student of Minato and was believed to have died in action. Madara secretly saved him, while Konoha continued to regard him as a fallen hero. Obito initially intended to protect Kakashi and Rin from the shadows, but Rin died before he could become strong enough to prevent it 96 191.

Witnessing Rin’s death transformed his ambitions. Black Zetsu remembers him as a vengeful youth who hated the world and wanted to replace it with one containing Rin. Obito remained unaware that Madara and Black Zetsu had used Rin as bait to manipulate him 177 185 235.

Obito later released the Nine-Tails against Konoha, causing the disaster in which Naruto lost his parents. Minato and his wife had previously treated Obito like their own child. Because the Nine-Tails visibly bore Sharingan while under control, the Uchiha Clan suffered suspicion and suppression for Obito’s actions 40.

Appearance

Obito conceals his identity beneath a spiral mask and robes; his uncovered face bears scars 24 185.

  • Mask: Orange, with a swirling pattern and a single opening over his right eye 24.
  • Visible eye: A crimson Sharingan, capable of using Mangekyō Sharingan abilities 24 186.
  • Clothing: Initially a dark robe; later a black robe patterned with red clouds 24 148.
  • Replacement arm: Uses a White Zetsu-made arm before its destruction; Black Zetsu later replaces his severed right arm with a pitch-black limb 224 270.

Personality

Obito uses intimidation, deception, and emotional pressure to recruit others. While impersonating Madara, he tries to force Itachi into massacring the Uchiha by threatening Konoha and invoking Sasuke’s safety. He prefers Itachi to strike first rather than personally bear the consequences of initiating the attack 24 28.

His attachment to Rin overrides much of his judgment. He initially mistakes Rin the Wanderer for his own Rin, then chooses to help protect her even after learning the difference. He views helping his counterpart as both an opportunity to save someone who suffered as he did and a form of atonement 185 192 251.

Repeated defeats by Naruto erode Obito’s confidence. He begins avoiding Naruto, admits that he cannot defeat him, and hopes to settle their conflict after becoming stronger. His threatening persona also gives way to bickering, stubborn bluster, and unusually frequent complaints while traveling with Black Zetsu 165 175 177 235.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan

Obito possesses a right-eye Sharingan and uses its Mangekyō ability, Kamui, as the foundation of his fighting style 24 186.

  • Itachi considers his proficiency too advanced for an outsider who merely acquired a Sharingan 24.
  • Obito can examine ocular power and explain the distinctions between the Sharingan, Mangekyō Sharingan, and Rinnegan 234.
  • He has only one Mangekyō Sharingan and explicitly regards himself as unable to activate Susanoo 267.
  • His resistance to genjutsu is poor. He fears that Sasuke may possess illusion techniques comparable to Itachi’s 155 167.

Kamui

Kamui allows Obito to alternate between tangible and intangible states and retreat into the Kamui Dimension 29 186.

  • Phasing: Physical attacks, sword strikes, fire techniques, and projectile barrages can pass through him 28 167 186 274.
  • Selective materialization: He phases his hand through an opponent’s weapon, then makes it solid to attempt a grab 186.
  • Escape: He uses Kamui to escape Amaterasu and leave an alternate world 152 167.
  • Activation gaps: Naruto catches him as his intangibility ends between actions 167.
  • Chakra dependence: Sealing his chakra prevents him from escaping through Kamui 219.
  • Spatial counters: Naruto can interfere with his Kamui Dimension. A space-sealing kunai supplied to Sasuke also disables Obito’s Mangekyō ability within its affected area 266 267 274.

Hashirama Cells and Wood Release

Obito’s Hashirama cells help him recover quickly from the damage caused by overusing his Mangekyō Sharingan. Black Zetsu’s replacement arm further strengthens his Wood Release 274.

  • Wood Release: Cutting Technique: Launches numerous small wooden branches toward an opponent 274.
  • Accuracy limitation: Sasuke avoids the entire volley with his Sharingan active 274.
  • Earlier enhancement: Black Zetsu recalls Obito entering a berserk state and wielding Wood Release proficiently while wearing Tobi 274.

Other Ninjutsu and Close Combat

  • Uchiha Flame Formation: Obito knows the technique well enough to recognize and test the Wanderer’s modified version, which can block attacks 187.
  • Earth-Style Wall: Raises a defensive wall after losing access to intangibility, though Sasuke’s concentrated barrage destroys it 274.
  • Kunai combat: Trades close-range blows with Obito the Wanderer, but struggles against the greater reach of his counterpart’s long blade 186 187.

Black Zetsu-Assisted Techniques

Black Zetsu can merge with Obito to enhance him or replace a missing limb 188 270.

  • Emergency movement: Black Zetsu forcibly moves Obito away from Sasuke’s barrage when Kamui is disabled 274.
  • Location signal: Obito injects chakra into dormant fragments of Black Zetsu stored inside his body to signal his location 235.
  • Communication limit: The signal is one-way; Obito cannot tell whether Black Zetsu received it or sent a response 236.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Orange spiral mask — Conceals his identity while leaving his right Sharingan exposed; repeatedly damaged during his fights with Naruto 24 166 219.
  • Dark robes / red-cloud robe — Worn during his masked appearances 24 148.
  • Kunai — Used for close combat and to probe the properties of Obito the Wanderer’s flame formation 186 187.

Relationships

  • Rin Nohara — The central attachment behind his plans. Her death shattered his original hopes, and he remains committed to creating a world with Rin 191 251.
  • Kakashi — Former close friend whom Obito resents for Rin’s death. He claims not to need friends when reminded of their relationship 232.
  • Minato and his wife — His former teacher and the teacher’s wife, who treated him like their own child. Obito nevertheless caused the Nine-Tails disaster that left their son orphaned 28 40.
  • Madara Uchiha — Secretly saved Obito’s life. Obito later assumes his name and hopes that resurrecting him might provide a chance against Naruto 24 191 266.
  • Black Zetsu — Traveling companion, manipulator, and repeated rescuer. Obito believes him to be Madara’s embodied will and does not know his true agenda 185 235 270.
  • Naruto Uzumaki — Enemy seeking repayment for his parents’ deaths. Naruto repeatedly defeats Obito but deliberately keeps him alive because he still has a task to complete 28 223.
  • Itachi Uchiha — Intended accomplice in the Uchiha massacre. Obito attempts to coerce him through threats involving the village and Sasuke 24.
  • Sasuke Uchiha — Enemy who learns to counter Kamui, severs Obito’s arm, and later drives him away with a space-sealing weapon and projectile barrage 267 270 274.
  • Obito the Wanderer — A separate counterpart who describes Obito as, to an extent, his previous life. Their initial lethal rivalry becomes reluctant cooperation, though mutual contempt persists 186 192 247 268.
  • Kakashi the Wanderer — A more considerate counterpart of Kakashi who befriends Obito, mediates his arguments with the Wanderer, and accompanies him to find Black Zetsu 232 234 236.
  • Rin the Wanderer — Not his own Rin, but someone he wants to protect so that his counterpart will not suffer the same loss 251.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Obito approaches Itachi under Madara’s name and proposes exterminating the Uchiha Clan. When Itachi resists, he threatens to destroy Konoha afterward and invokes Sasuke’s safety to pressure him 24.

  • Arrives to find Naruto and Sasuke delaying Itachi, whom he had expected to initiate the attack 28.
  • Phases through Naruto’s opening lightning-charged elbow strike 28.
  • Answers Naruto while he holds a jar, triggering powerful suction that prevents Obito from using intangibility 29.
  • Escapes into the Kamui Dimension, wounded and furious at Naruto’s mockery 29.

Menma’s World

Obito discovers another world by chance and investigates whether he can capture its tailed beasts, since his own world’s Naruto is too powerful for him 148.

  • Brings Naruto and two companions into that world 148.
  • Exists there without a physical form and cannot directly touch its inhabitants 148.
  • Initially fuses with Menma only enough to supply experience and replenish chakra, withholding complete access to intangibility 148.
  • Later enters Menma’s shadow; Menma’s left eye changes into a pinwheel-patterned Mangekyō Sharingan 148.
  • Abandons the confrontation and returns to his original world through Kamui when Naruto frightens him into retreat 152.

Escalating Defeats

  • Naruto shatters Obito’s mask and inflicts severe damage with a Rasengan, leaving him missing an arm 166.
  • Obito escapes Sasuke’s Amaterasu, but Naruto catches the gap in his intangibility with sealing techniques and genjutsu. Naruto and Sasuke then beat him while he is immobilized 167.
  • Obito admits to Black Zetsu that Naruto’s abilities are beyond him and begins avoiding further encounters 165 175.

Arrival in the Wanderer World

Obito and Black Zetsu travel through the Wanderer World and reach the God Tree. There, Obito finds a crystal containing someone he initially believes to be Rin 183 184 185.

  • Encounters Obito the Wanderer, whose identical face, scars, and Kamui initially leave him bewildered 185 186.
  • Fights his counterpart to a stalemate until the Wanderer unleashes an attack with spatial properties that Obito cannot readily escape 187 188.
  • Receives a temporary boost when Black Zetsu possesses him 188.
  • Agrees to help his counterpart after learning that Rin the Wanderer is still alive 192.
  • Subsequently becomes a pawn in the Wanderer’s plans and travels with Black Zetsu and Kimimaro the Wanderer 205.

Rinnegan Investigation

After another defeat by Naruto, Obito recovers with Kakashi the Wanderer. His destroyed White Zetsu arm cannot regenerate without replacement material 223 224.

  • Examines Obito the Wanderer’s unusable Rinnegan and suspects a connection to the genjutsu world trapping him 234.
  • Explains the eye systems to both Wanderers but cannot personally solve the problem 234 235.
  • Searches with Kakashi the Wanderer for Black Zetsu, eventually retrieving him from Danzo the Wanderer 236 247.
  • Helps bring Black Zetsu into the investigation that precedes the Wanderer’s Rinnegan activation; Obito himself does not acquire a Rinnegan 248 249 252.

Battles at the God Tree

  • Fights Sasuke while Obito the Wanderer confronts Naruto. Learning that Naruto possesses both Rinnegan powers and Kamui leaves Obito doubting whether his plan can succeed 265 266.
  • Cannot gain an advantage over Sasuke, who understands Kamui and exploits Obito’s limited options 267.
  • Escapes after Sasuke severs his right arm; Black Zetsu replaces the missing limb 270.
  • Returns against Sasuke with enhanced Wood Release, but a space-sealing kunai disables his intangibility. Black Zetsu helps him survive the ensuing barrage, and Obito flees with a serious abdominal wound 274.
