Low blood sugar
"Hello? Hello? Xiao Yan!" Jiang Miao shouted.
Xiao Yan looked at Caleb and swallowed with difficulty. "I'm... here."
Caleb turned to face her, tilting his head up to meet her eyes.
Only when Xavier carried her around a corner.
And he was out of sight.
Did Xiao Yan finally let out the breath caught in her throat.
"I heard Xavier's voice. Is he beside you?" Jiang Miao asked.
"Mm." Xiao Yan rested her head on Xavier's shoulder. "I'll come over early tonight. Was there anything else?"
"Say hi to Xavier for me, and the other four at your place too. Every one of them~"
"Okay. See you tonight."
"See you tonight~"
After hanging up, Xiao Yan heaved an enormous sigh.
Xavier's voice was gentle and smiling. "What's wrong?"
"No." Xiao Yan couldn't say it. "Nothing."
"I know a spoken apology alone isn't very sincere, so I'll do my best today and take proper care of you." Xavier raised his left hand and patted Xiao Yan's back. "If you're still angry, you can hit me a few times. I won't hit back."
"Hit you? I couldn't bear to." Xiao Yan sounded muffled.
"Then how about a few kisses?"
"I'll hit you!" Xiao Yan made a fist and waved it in front of Xavier's eyes.
Xavier smiled. "You're so fickle, partner."
Back in the room, Xavier did exactly as he had said.
He squeezed out the toothpaste himself. If Xiao Yan hadn't snatched the toothbrush away, Xavier might really have brushed her teeth for her.
By the time she finished brushing, Xavier had already rinsed a soft towel in warm water. He took her chin, turned her face toward him, and gently wiped it over and over.
After washing her face, he led her over to sit at the vanity.
Looking at all the bottles and jars on it, Xavier was stumped. "Which one comes first?"
Xiao Yan picked up the toner.
"Let me." Xavier snatched it from her, poured a little into his palm, and rubbed his hands together. "Close your eyes."
With warm hands patiently rubbing and patting her face, Xiao Yan was starting to feel embarrassed.
Xavier snatched the serum too and applied it for her, even asking, "You're supposed to massage it in to help it absorb, right?"
"Oh, there's no need." A few more rounds of his massage and Xiao Yan would be burning red.
When it came to the face cream, she refused to let Xavier do it for her, no matter what.
Next came her makeup.
Xiao Yan didn't particularly like other people fiddling with her face.
Her makeup skills were decent. There was no need to call in a makeup artist; she could get herself ready perfectly well.
Xavier stood beside her, watching with interest as Xiao Yan applied layer after layer of mysterious things to her face in the mirror.
His staring made Xiao Yan uncomfortable all over. "Why don't you take a walk downstairs?"
"I don't want to," Xavier refused. "Watching you do your makeup is much more interesting than talking to them."
"Them?" Did he mean Zayne and Caleb?
"They're all back." Xavier sighed softly. "Once I'd said hello, I didn't know what else to say."
Huh? They were all back?
Xiao Yan sped up her makeup.
Just then, someone knocked on the door, and it opened immediately afterward.
A sweet, mellow voice rang out at once. "What are you two hiding in here for... oh, makeup~"
Xiao Yan turned with a little brush in hand, unable to hide the excitement in her voice. "Rafayel!"
Rafayel's formal outfit looked a little like that waist-cinched suit in the game with a red jacket and black trousers.
The jacket even had hand-embroidered roses on it, looking very passionate and romantic.
"Now that's a nice reaction. That happy to see me?" Even his walk was carefree as he approached the vanity.
He and Xavier flanked her on either side.
Xavier stood straight.
Rafayel perched on the edge of the vanity and bent down to look at Xiao Yan. "That foundation shade suits you. The base looks light and breathable. You're pretty good at this."
Xiao Yan chuckled.
Xavier cleared his throat. "Why did you come upstairs too?"
"Ah." Rafayel straightened up and shook his head helplessly. "One look at Sylus's face told me he was going to stir up trouble, so I came up to take refuge. What? Am I not welcome? She's not just your wife. I'm allowed into her room too, okay?"
Xiao Yan grew a little nervous, afraid Rafayel would anger Xavier again.
She turned to look at Xavier. Only when she saw him merely raise an eyebrow, without any negative reaction, did she relax.
"Hey, that Caleb is so hard to talk to. Is he always that gloomy?" Rafayel asked.
Xavier shook his head. "I don't know. I've met him exactly as many times as you have."
"Oh." Rafayel pursed his lips and shrugged. "Would our wife care to explain?"
Xiao Yan wrestled with it for a moment, then continued doing her makeup in the mirror. "I don't know him that well either."
Rafayel asked again, "Do Zayne and Caleb have some kind of bad blood? The moment they saw each other, they started trading daggers, like they wanted to skin each other alive."
"They're childhood friends, so they probably don't hate each other. As for that atmosphere just now..." Xavier shook his head again. "I don't know."
"Wife?" Rafayel called on her for an answer again.
Xiao Yan felt even more conflicted. "I don't know either."
Rafayel picked up a bottle of perfume from the vanity, sprayed it into the air, and sniffed. "You don't know this, you don't know that... hmm, what's this scent? White tea and jasmine? It smells pretty nice."
With Rafayel around, the conversation rarely died.
He could always find a topic, jumping from one thing to another.
But Xiao Yan could still tell that Xavier's responses were growing increasingly perfunctory. His patience was visibly running out.
She hurriedly finished her makeup and stood. "Let's go have breakfast."
She walked ahead.
The two men followed side by side.
Rafayel kept trying to chat with Xavier.
At last, Xavier couldn't take it anymore. "Why do you talk so much?"
"What else should we do? All stay silent and act out a silent film? Every last one of you is so introverted." Rafayel sounded disdainful. "Sylus does like to talk, but everything he says is something I don't want to hear."
"I don't have anything you'd want to hear either." Xavier sighed. "Go find Sylus. He doesn't mind you."
"You actually find me annoying?" Rafayel sounded incredulous. "Do you have any idea how hard it is for those people out there to get a word with me?"
"Who are those people?" Xavier said. "I don't know a single one."
"Be honest. You're a shut-in, aren't you? Social anxiety?" Rafayel paused, putting on a solemn air. "You might not believe this, but I'm actually very introverted too."
Xavier truly didn't want to talk anymore.
Entering the dining room, they saw Sylus, also in a black suit, sitting with Caleb and discussing something.
Xiao Yan turned, about to head for the kitchen.
"Not even going to say hello?" Sylus raised his voice. "I don't think I've offended you. Why do you look like you've seen a ghost at the sight of me?"
She couldn't let Sylus misunderstand...
Xiao Yan braced herself, entered the dining room, and sat at the head of the table.
"You look a little pale. Are you ill?" Sylus rose and bent down beside Xiao Yan.
His red eyes gazed steadily at her as he checked her forehead with the back of his hand. "No fever. Didn't sleep well?"
"Huh? Weren't you fine just now?" After sitting down, Rafayel studied Xiao Yan curiously. "Something does seem a little off. Low blood sugar?"
"I'll ask Dr. Zayne if breakfast is ready." Xavier turned and headed for the kitchen.
Caleb slowly rose, and Xiao Yan pressed her lips together involuntarily.
"If you're really not feeling well, should we cancel tonight's banquet?" Sylus asked.
"No need," Xiao Yan answered immediately. "It's just low blood sugar."
"I'll make you a strong sugar solution and ask Zayne to come take a look," Caleb said, leaving the dining room.
