| First Appearance | Appears unnamed in a green Forest Ranger uniform 18; introduces himself by name 19 |
Appearance
- Clothing: Wears a green Forest Ranger uniform 18.
- Fox ears: Fluffy and visibly expressive; they stiffen when he becomes protective or anxious and droop when he is disappointed or exhausted 19 25 26 36. They fold back or flatten when he becomes suspicious or shocked 126.
- Tail: Described as drooping alongside his ears during Cyno’s improvised interrogation of Xingsu 36. It becomes rigid when he learns that Xingsu willingly joined the Fatui 126.
- Eyes: Emerald green 126.
Personality
Tighnari is particularly protective of Collei. When Xingsu’s questions frighten her, he immediately shields her and scrutinizes the stranger’s intentions. Even after permitting an examination, he remains beside her, requires Xingsu to stop at any sign of discomfort, and reassures her that they can leave immediately 19.
His scholarly curiosity is tempered by concern for others. Although astonished by Xingsu’s ability to relieve Eleazar, he apologizes for becoming overexcited and makes sure the boy can rest. He later seeks a reproducible treatment for all Eleazar patients but accepts that Xingsu’s power cannot safely be imitated 19 26.
He values independent investigation over established authority. His research relies on firsthand observations rather than ready-made Akasha information, and he criticizes scholars who label difficult research heretical instead of addressing it academically 27 29. His patience is less enduring when faced with Cyno’s jokes, which he eventually interrupts with an emphatic demand to stop 36.
His trust in friends does not erase his caution toward the Fatui. Learning that Xingsu joined voluntarily initially leads him to suspect brainwashing, and he stresses that the organization’s crimes and its abuse of Collei cannot simply be dismissed. Nevertheless, he listens to Xingsu’s explanation and later acknowledges that his friend’s character has not changed 126 142.
He is attentive to unusual behavior in people he knows well. Nafis’s excessive letters concern him precisely because they differ from his teacher’s usual direct approach, prompting him to return to Sumeru City and consult Cyno 139.
Abilities & Skills
Herbal Medicine and Patient Care
- Prepares herbal prescriptions to suppress Eleazar’s physical symptoms and monitors Collei’s condition, including checking her pulse after treatment 19 25.
- Recognizes the limits of conventional medicine: his remedies alleviate pain but do not eradicate the illness’s underlying source 19 26.
- Produces practical preparations for desert travel, including heat-resistance potions and herbal sunscreen ointment 36 39.
- Developed an Eleazar prescription using Greater Lord Rukkhadevata’s Sacred Body Mushrooms and Padisarah stamens. His notes credit it with easing burning pain and scale hardening, calming the mind and palpitations, improving sleep-related symptoms, and reducing acute episodes. He later rarely used it because the mushrooms were precious and difficult to gather 21.
- Provides emergency wound care with the herbs he carries. In the Chasm, he cleans and treats Nikolay’s injuries, after which the boy’s fever subsides somewhat 126.
- Examines Lumine after her collapse and attributes it to an uncommon adverse reaction to Spirit Borneol incense. He prescribes medicine, continued observation, and restrictions on going out alone while she recovers 140.
Eleazar and Rainforest Research
- Has spent years conducting forest patrols in Avidya Forest and documenting medical and environmental observations 20.
- Studies rainforest ecology and personally records field findings and pharmacological experiment data rather than relying on the Akasha for conclusions 27.
- His technical notes cover Withering Zone miasma, fungal-spore contamination, Eleazar mutations, and toxin-release cycles from Ley Line fissures 20.
- His work supplies reference material for Xingsu’s investigation of Eleazar and Memoria erosion 20 27.
Forest Patrol and Hazard Management
- Conducts patrols with Collei and promptly investigates activity in a Withering Zone when he believes someone may have wandered inside 125 126.
- Personally handles dangerous Forest Ranger duties, including venturing deep into the forest to clear Withering Zones and checking for disaster risks, while Collei performs more basic tasks during her training 140.
History
Meeting Xingsu
Tighnari brings Collei to the House of Daena to borrow literacy primers. The newly employed Xingsu offers them two books and his own annotated notes, then notices black mist surrounding Collei. Tighnari initially reacts defensively but cautiously permits him to examine it without touching her 19.
When Xingsu touches the mist, he staggers under its pain and despair, while Collei’s pain diminishes and her black, scale-like patches fade. Tighnari helps Xingsu rest and introduces himself as a Forest Watcher and Collei as his student 19.
The encounter prompts Tighnari to reconsider Eleazar in terms of forbidden knowledge damaging memories and the soul. He also recognizes the burden treatment places on Xingsu and tells Alhaitham about the discovery 20.
Collei’s Relapse and the Communication Problem
When Collei becomes bedridden and her usual medicine provides little relief, Tighnari urgently fetches Xingsu from the House of Daena. At the Forest Rangers’ camp, Xingsu absorbs the mist again, allowing Collei to sleep peacefully. Tighnari examines her and confirms that she has stabilized 25.
Afterward, he asks whether the method could be taught to others. Xingsu explains that it depends on his unique ability to absorb and purify negative Memoria; another person attempting it could become contaminated instead 26.
Tighnari then raises a practical concern: Gandharva Ville is far from Sumeru City, making emergency requests too slow, and the settlement receives other Eleazar patients as well. Their discussion of this problem leads Xingsu to consider the Akasha Terminal as a rapid communication medium, helping inspire his Wisdom Network research 26 27.
Supporting Xingsu’s Research
After reviewers dismiss Xingsu’s Eleazar paper, Xingsu turns to Tighnari and Alhaitham for help. Tighnari witnesses a successful treatment demonstration alongside Nafis and other Amurta scholars, providing direct evidence for the rejected research 28.
At Puspa Café, he warns that the Wisdom Network threatens influential interests and has drawn intense controversy. He condemns the tendency to brand work heretical when critics cannot refute it on academic grounds 29.
Helping Xingsu Leave Sumeru
Tighnari joins Cyno after Xingsu’s apparent arrest and explains that the detention is protective. With Azar moving against Xingsu and Dottore approaching Sumeru, he supports the decision to send him abroad immediately 36.
He promises to care for Collei and relay Xingsu’s farewell message. For the desert crossing, he supplies heat-resistance potions and basic provisions, warns about Eremites and uncontrolled Ruin Guards, and assures Xingsu that a friend will help him along the route 36.
After Xingsu’s departure, Tighnari praises his principles and continued commitment to medicine and communication research despite persecution. He hopes Fontaine will offer him safety rather than further homelessness 41.
Tighnari later explains that the Akademiya formally found Xingsu guilty and expelled him from Sumeru. Research into the Wisdom Network was banned, while the Eleazar Memory Theory was abandoned after its creator’s departure. Although he continues to recognize the theory’s value, Tighnari believes it may be so unusual and advanced that Xingsu alone can put it into practice 141.
Reunion and Nikolay’s Treatment
During a patrol, Collei notices movement in a Withering Zone. Tighnari accompanies her to investigate a possible endangered traveler, only to find Xingsu killing the last monster there. Both recognize him with surprise 125.
Xingsu urgently requests help for a gravely injured child. Tighnari ends Collei’s patrol and sends her back to review her assigned texts, then accompanies Xingsu toward the Chasm. Xingsu pulls him along at great speed and carries him on his back when jumping into the rift. At the temporary camp, Tighnari cleans Nikolay’s wounds and applies his carried herbs before fully taking in the presence of the surrounding Fatui soldiers, Lumine, and Yelan 126.
When Xingsu reveals that he voluntarily joined the Fatui, Tighnari reacts with disbelief and suspects that he has been brainwashed. Remembering Dottore’s reputation and Collei’s suffering, he reaches for his weapon, prompting the nearby soldiers to become alert. Xingsu orders them to lower their weapons and explains that he serves Arlecchino, opposes Dottore’s abuses, and protects homeless children rather than approving of the Fatui’s crimes 126.
Tighnari wants to believe his friend but remains troubled by the organization’s actions. Before they part, Xingsu asks him to tell Collei that he will have cured Eleazar completely by their next meeting 126.
Concerns About the Akademiya
Tighnari returns to Sumeru City after Nafis repeatedly asks him to help with newly admitted desert students. These students receive additional academic credits and have their food and lodging covered by the Akademiya. At Puspa Café, Tighnari meets Cyno and Kaveh and explains that the sheer number of letters from his teacher feels abnormal 139.
He reasons that Nafis would ordinarily come to Gandharva Ville and drag him back personally if the need were urgent. His unease extends to Sumeru City as a whole. Cyno agrees that the situation warrants investigation and plans to accompany him back to Gandharva Ville before investigating the sages independently. Tighnari also suggests that Kaveh consult Alhaitham, whose position as Scribe might give him insight into events at the Akademiya 139.
Caring for Lumine and Collei
Tighnari and Collei find Lumine unconscious during a forest patrol and bring her to Gandharva Ville. After she wakes, he examines her and explains that Spirit Borneol incense affected her mind. When she describes seeing an enormous tree and hearing the words “The world... forget me...,” he characterizes the experience as severe hallucinations and recommends that she remain under observation. Lumine privately remains convinced that her experience was real 140.
Collei subsequently suffers an Eleazar flare-up after Paimon mentions that Xingsu joined the Fatui. Tighnari reports that she is asleep and temporarily out of danger, then speaks with Lumine and Paimon away from her room. He explains how Collei’s mother entrusted her to the Fatui in search of a cure, how Dottore’s painful treatment suppressed her illness, and how Xingsu later cared for her and developed the Eleazar Memory Theory 141.
Rather than continuing to blame Paimon, Tighnari tells the travelers to rest and promises to remain with Collei 141.
Xingsu’s Return and the God-Creation Plot
After Xingsu returns to ease Collei’s worsening symptoms, Tighnari meets him outside her room with Lumine and Paimon. Concerned by his weary appearance, he asks about Collei and listens as Xingsu explains that she requested time alone after learning of his Fatui affiliation 142.
Xingsu then reveals that Dottore and Grand Sage Azar have made a deal to create a god and that their plan is nearly complete. Tighnari asks what has happened in Sumeru City and hears that Scaramouche obtained the Electro Archon’s Gnosis for his ascension. He and Xingsu briefly fall silent when Paimon asks why Lesser Lord Kusanali has not stopped the plot 142.
Once Lumine and Paimon leave to say goodbye to Collei, Tighnari speaks privately with Xingsu. Xingsu praises him for raising Collei into someone capable of expressing her own wishes rather than mechanically obeying others. Tighnari accepts the compliment, concludes that joining the Fatui has not changed his friend, and welcomes him back 142.
Research Works and Preparations
- “Eleazar Observation Notes” — One of his works available in the House of Daena 20.
- “Ancient Sumeru Methods for Suppressing Eleazar” — A work on methods of managing the disease 20.
- “How to Comfort a Child with Eleazar” — A work addressing care for young sufferers 20.
- Handwritten Eleazar manuscript — Contains observation notes, herbal formulas, and data, with dried rainforest flowers and herbs pressed between its pages 20.
- Sacred Body Mushroom and Padisarah prescription — An Eleazar symptom-management formula recorded in his research; its use became infrequent because a principal ingredient was difficult to obtain 21.
- Herbal sunscreen ointment — Prepared for Xingsu’s journey; Xingsu later gives his last jar to Dehya at Fontaine’s border 39.
Relationships
- Collei — His student and patient. She relies on him for reassurance and protection, while he persistently seeks better treatment for her Eleazar 19 25 36. He continues her education through assigned texts and patrol work, takes responsibility for more dangerous forest duties, and stays beside her during later relapses. Xingsu credits him with helping her develop the confidence to express her own wishes 126 140 141 142.
- Xingsu — Friend and research collaborator whose help transforms his understanding of Eleazar. Tighnari supports his research and helps prepare his escape from Sumeru 20 27 28 36. Their reunion is strained by Xingsu’s voluntary Fatui membership, but Tighnari listens to his explanation and eventually welcomes him back as an unchanged friend and ally 126 142.
- Alhaitham — An acquaintance with whom he shares Xingsu’s discovery; both later support Xingsu during the academic controversy 20 28 29. When concerned about the Akademiya’s activities, Tighnari identifies Alhaitham as someone Kaveh could consult for information 139.
- Cyno — A friend whose fairness and perceptiveness he respects, despite his exasperation with Cyno’s jokes. They cooperate to protect Xingsu 29 36. Tighnari later confides his concerns about Nafis and Sumeru City to him, and Cyno agrees to investigate the sages 139.
- Kaveh — Part of the group that gathers with Tighnari, Alhaitham, and Xingsu at Puspa Café 29. They later meet there again when Tighnari returns to investigate Nafis’s unusual requests 139.
- Nafis — His teacher, who attends Xingsu’s Eleazar treatment demonstration 28. Repeated letters asking Tighnari to return and assist desert students prompt concern because they do not match the direct behavior he expects from Nafis 139.
- Lumine and Paimon — Tighnari meets Lumine during Nikolay’s treatment in the Chasm and later recognizes both travelers when Lumine recovers in Gandharva Ville. He treats her reaction to incense, explains Collei’s history and Xingsu’s research to them, and hears Xingsu’s intelligence about the god-creation plot alongside them 126 140 141 142.
- Nikolay — A gravely injured Fatui youth whom Tighnari treats at Xingsu’s urgent request. His wound care helps reduce Nikolay’s fever 126.
- Dottore — Tighnari knows his notorious reputation in Sumeru and the suffering associated with Collei’s treatment under him. This knowledge strongly informs his initial distrust of Xingsu’s decision to join the Fatui 126 141.
Trivia
- Tighnari explains that an Amurta student’s carrier-pigeon project failed because predators ate most of the pigeons during outdoor training 26.
- Both Collei and Xingsu express an interest in touching his fluffy ears 41.
- Cyno uses his name in the football-themed password exchanged between Xingsu and Dehya: “Because they all know where Tighnari—where to kick” 37.
- Cyno later makes another pun about there being “no Tigh-nary sign” of him shortly before he arrives at Puspa Café. Tighnari responds that Cyno’s cold joke has lowered the café’s temperature, only to provoke a further explanation about warm-blooded people warming the room 139.
- When Collei recalls Xingsu whisking him away to the Chasm, Tighnari clears his throat and more formally describes the incident as a request for his assistance 140.
- During their reunion in Gandharva Ville, Xingsu serves him coffee made with blue-staining bolete 142.
