Quack Doctor

Claire was still covering her nose when a thin, tall man with an unkempt beard, wearing a black robe, leaned in.

He said enthusiastically, "Are you here for treatment? I'm the doctor here, Moses."

Claire frowned at his attire. He didn't look like a doctor at all, more like a sewer cleaner, and there was a faint smell emanating from him.

"No, I'm here for my mother," Yuna said. "She's still in the clinic. You said you couldn't cure her, so I want to take her back."

Doctor Moses only then noticed Yuna beside Claire, his expression immediately turning disdainful, as if he were swatting away a fly.

"We agreed beforehand, even if you take her back, the money won't be refunded. If she can't be cured, it's your mother's body that's at fault. Why can others be cured but not her?"

His initial enthusiasm for Claire was because he thought she was there to give him money, and second, her clothing suggested wealth and status, so he felt he had to curry favor. But now, seeing she came with this girl, she couldn't be that distinguished.

Yuna seemed intimidated by his tone and said softly, "I understand, I won't ask for the money back."

Even though it was her entire month's salary, that's how things were in Nafu City. There was only one clinic in the entire city, and this doctor held a high position. Unless you could guarantee you'd never get sick again, few people would dare to offend a doctor.

Yuna led Claire into the clinic. As soon as they entered, Claire felt a wave of dizziness. The smell inside was even more pungent than outside.

Doctor Moses followed closely behind them, afraid that Claire and Yuna would steal his medical equipment. His small eyes watched them like a thief.

Inside, Claire could see the internal structure of the building. It was completely different from the hospitals in her previous life. This place was more like the dingy inns from her past life. It wasn't dilapidated, but staying there for too long would make one feel uncomfortable.

Yuna ran to a sickbed. Lying on it was a woman in her late forties or early fifties. Her lips were pale, her eyes were unfocused, and she barely managed to open them to recognize her daughter.

"Why are you here? Aren't you working?" the woman asked.

"Mom, it's okay, I've found someone who can cure you," Yuna said, tears welling up again as she looked at her mother.

Claire maintained her frown. The sheets and blankets on the sickbed were yellowed and hadn't been changed. Was this even a hospital?

Doctor Moses, who had been following them, finally understood.

So, this well-dressed person wasn't here for treatment, but to treat his patient. This was clearly an attempt to steal his patient, to steal his money!

"Bang!" Moses slammed the table and yelled, "What do you mean by this? Don't you trust my medical skills? You even brought someone from outside to treat her!"

Claire didn't indulge him and retorted, "What do you mean? You can't cure her, and you won't let her go elsewhere? What kind of doctor are you!"

"Hmph! Everyone in Nafu City knows that only I, Moses, can be a doctor! Are you new to Nafu City? Being a doctor isn't just about medical skills!"

Moses pointed his finger at Claire's chest, but she dodged him with a step back.

Claire sneered, "What a toad croaking with such a big voice!"

"Hmph! You can't take the patient away!" Moses blocked the exit, "Otherwise, if the patient dies after you take her, you'll blame me!"

Claire's eyes visibly turned cold. "I'll say this once: get out of my way! If this patient dies under your care, can you bear the responsibility?"

Moses said indifferently, "What's the point of a poor person like her dying? She doesn't have money for Holy Light treatment at the church. I'm the only doctor in Nafu City. If she can't be cured, it's just bad luck. Why can others be cured but not her! She deserves to die. The Lord wants her to die."

Claire was already seething with anger. Damn it, she had never met such an arrogant person before.

Her voice turned icy cold. "I'll say this one last time: get lost!"

As she spoke, Claire's mental power was released invisibly, creating a pressure that startled Moses and made him step back a few paces.

"You... you!" Moses pointed at Claire, wanting to say something threatening, but he felt that if he didn't move, he would die.

Claire's expression remained stern. She looked at Moses and said calmly, "Yuna, help your mother up, let's go."

"Okay," Yuna said, looking at Claire's back and feeling a sense of security.

After lifting the blanket covering her mother, Yuna paused and looked at Moses. "Doctor, can you remove these needles from my mother?"

"Hmph!" Moses snorted, but he still walked over. He didn't want this damned woman to take his medical equipment.

Only Claire was confused. Since she was facing away from Yuna, she couldn't see clearly. She muttered, "Needles?"

She turned her head and saw a needle inserted into Yuna's mother's arm. It wasn't an IV drip as she had imagined; instead, blood was continuously flowing out of the needle and down the tube into an iron bucket at the foot of the bed.

Claire was shocked. What kind of treatment was this?!

In the blink of an eye, the needle was pulled out. Moses reached into a small jar, scooped out a lump of yellowish-green, foul-smelling substance, and prepared to smear it on the wound.

Claire stepped forward and kicked Moses's hand away, demanding, "What are you doing! What is that thing in your hand?"

"What do you know! This is bloodletting therapy. I'm starting to doubt if you're a doctor, not even knowing this!" Moses said angrily, raising the yellowish-green object in his hand. "This is cow dung, used to smear on wounds. If you don't understand, get out of the way."

He then tried to move forward again to apply the cow dung to the wound.

Claire finally understood the source of the foul smell filling the room.

A surge of rage welled up inside her. I really... Damn it! I thought you were just a greedy quack, but I didn't expect you to be a scoundrel who knows nothing and only harms people!

Bloodletting was already outrageous, and now he was smearing cow dung on the wound? Was he trying to speed up the infection?

"Boom!"

A loud explosion echoed from the clinic, followed by a thin, elongated figure being sent flying out.

Moses clutched his chest, trying to get up, but before he could, Claire stomped on his chest, pushing him back down.

"What do you want!" Moses threatened. "You dare to touch me, you must be tired of living."

"Shh! Quiet!" Claire put a finger to her lips. "I have a question for you. How many years have you been a doctor in Nafu City?"

"I've been a doctor for over twenty years! Now take your foot off me, or you'll regret it!"

"Over twenty years, how many people have died by your hand?" Claire asked, narrowing her eyes, a faint killing intent emanating from her tone.

"What do you want!" Moses grew frightened. "Do you know why I'm the only clinic in all of Nafu City? Do you know who's behind me? Let me go quickly, you can't afford to offend me!"

"There's someone in Nafu City I can't afford to offend? Yes, I should have realized. If you didn't have someone backing you, how could your shabby clinic stay open?"

This world already had Mages who sought truth, and medical skills hadn't developed slowly either. At least in Claire's memory, there were excellent physicians in the Royal Capital. Although overall they couldn't compare to the medical standards of her past life, they were still outstanding in certain aspects. At the very least, there wouldn't be a situation where people died carelessly due to medical malpractice. Therefore, this Moses wasn't a legitimate doctor at all, but simply a charlatan who swindled people.

Claire drew her Revolver from behind her back, not aiming it at Moses on the ground, but pointing the barrel towards the sky.

"Bang! Bang! Bang!" Just three bullets. With Claire's current control as an Intermediate Mage, she could have produced them even by hitting an Iron Hammer.

After the three shots, an unknown foul-smelling liquid flowed from between Moses's legs. He said fearfully, "You can't kill me... Baron Eugene is behind me!"

Claire looked at the puddle of urine and took a few steps back in disgust. "Baron Eugene, right? Don't worry, I won't kill you, at least not right now."

Sigh, why are all your comments saying this book is not bad? Come on, let's standardize the comments, shall we? "This book is so good!"

"I'll be here every day to catch up on updates!"

"I'll cast my recommendation votes every day!"

"Never have I ever seen such a good novel!"

(Just kidding, dog head emoji, protecting myself with double buffs!)
