Background / History

Marriage and Joanna’s Death

Tywin first met Joanna while accompanying his father, Tytos, to an audience with Jaehaerys II in the Red Keep. He abruptly declared that she would become his wife; she answered, “I know.” They were betrothed a year later and married three years after their meeting. Joanna became the only person for whom he willingly smiled in private 1.

In 273 AC, Joanna died delivering Tyrion and Leon at Casterly Rock. Tywin recoiled from Tyrion’s deformities and Leon’s unnaturally perfect appearance, interpreting their contrasting features and unusually small bodies as insults to House Lannister. He branded them the family’s “double curse” 1 2.

Confinement of the Twins

Tywin ordered the boys raised separately and concealed from outsiders. Tyrion received a damp room in the east wing and the lowest standard of nourishment, while Leon received a sunny room in the west tower and intermediate nourishment. Servants were forbidden to exchange information about them under threat of mutilation. Tywin permitted Tyrion to learn to read and planned music and harp lessons for Leon, intending to extract some usefulness from both children 2.

When the twins briefly saw one another in a courtyard in 276 AC, Tywin tightened their confinement, ordering iron bars for Leon’s windows and boards over part of Tyrion’s ventilation grille 3.

Their concealment ended during the Lannisport tourney, when they escaped and joined Gerion and Rhaegar at a tavern. Tywin dismissed Rhaegar’s intervention as interference in a family matter and had the boys suspended outside the gate in separate pig cages. He also threatened Jaime with the same punishment when he pleaded for them. Leon had deliberately sought public exposure so Tywin could no longer pretend the twins did not exist 6 7.

At the same tourney, Tywin publicly proposed a betrothal between Cersei and Rhaegar. Aerys rejected him by declaring that a servant’s daughter was unfit to marry her master’s heir 7.

Education and Conditional Recognition

After the twins’ release, Tywin authorized lessons with Maesters Creylen and Loomis, alongside martial instruction under Kevan. Their curriculum included swordsmanship, archery, riding, and physical training adapted to their limitations 8.

Following an assassination attempt on the covered bridge, Tywin personally inspected the scene and questioned witnesses. Although suspicion fell on Cersei, he did not immediately pronounce her guilty. He doubled the twins’ guards, ordered daily route changes, and placed them in systematic training with intermediate resources for a three-month observation period 10.

At the end of that period, he lifted Cersei’s confinement but rebuked her for allowing outsiders to exploit her jealousy. Leon and Tyrion then passed a public combat assessment, earning places in the family’s senior ranks and decision-making authority. Tywin regarded their success as proof that they were ready for a larger political stage 11.

Highgarden and the Wendwater

Tywin divided the family’s journey to King’s Landing. He took Jaime and Cersei overland in a conspicuous convoy intended to display Westerlands discipline and support future marriage negotiations. Leon and Tyrion traveled through Highgarden under Gerion’s escort 12.

The twins’ assignment was to investigate the balance of power between Mace and Olenna Tyrell, assess the loyalties of Reach lords, and examine Highgarden’s industries. Tywin also warned Leon that Mace might covet him as a collectible, describing his son as Lannister property that must not be damaged 12.

Leon’s independent acquisition of royal tax authority in the Wendwater unsettled Tywin. Nevertheless, he supplied craftsmen and funds while insisting that Leon’s work serve the family. He kept Tyrion in King’s Landing to investigate wildfire production, storage sites, and Qarlton Chelsted’s accounts, providing access to an old archive room as a resource 20 21.

Harrenhal and the Loss of His Heir

Before the Harrenhal tourney, Tywin instructed Leon to study the great houses and Tyrion to uncover competitors’ debts, backgrounds, and secrets. He also directed his sons to investigate suspicious attacks on the Stark party 23 25.

Aerys’s appointment of Jaime to the Kingsguard destroyed Tywin’s succession and marriage plans, including negotiations for Jaime to marry Lysa Tully. Unable to marry or inherit, Jaime ceased to be his heir, leaving Tyrion next in line. Tywin admitted that surrendering his practical authority as Hand had allowed Aerys to make the appointment without his countersignature 27.

After the tourney, Tywin acknowledged Leon’s success in the Wendwater but reiterated that usefulness meant service to House Lannister. He allowed Tyrion to accompany Leon there while refusing further family support for him, stating that Tyrion could be replaced if he died 31.

Rebellion and Leon’s Departure

During Robert’s Rebellion, Tywin initially withheld his forces at Casterly Rock. Before the Trident, he informed Leon and Tyrion that the Westerlands army had secretly assembled and would march on the lightly defended capital while the main armies were occupied elsewhere. He also ordered Leon to encourage Robert to consider Cersei as his queen 36 37.

News of Tywin’s approach helped prompt Leon to enter King’s Landing ahead of Robert’s army to rescue Rhaegar’s children. Cersei subsequently married Robert, fulfilling Tywin’s ambition to make his daughter queen 40 49.

Tyrion returned to Casterly Rock partly to divert Tywin’s attention from Leon’s escape. Tywin later questioned him about Leon’s whereabouts, unaware that Tyrion knew Leon had reached the Summer Isles. Though he recognized that fleeing gave Leon a chance to survive accusations of Targaryen loyalty, he used the comparison to belittle Tyrion for remaining behind 41 48.

Appearance

  • Build and bearing: Tall, with an upright posture and restrained, forceful gestures associated with years of military life 1.
  • Eyes: Emerald green, repeatedly described as cold and scrutinizing 1 10 48.
  • Clothing: Wears crimson or dark red velvet on formal occasions and frequently dresses entirely in black 1 11 25.
  • Distinguishing accessory: A golden lion brooch or pin at his collar 17 25.

Personality

Tywin places the prestige and continuity of House Lannister above the happiness of its members. He treats children, marriages, education, and financial support as resources whose value must be demonstrated. His contempt for Tyrion and Leon does not prevent him from employing their intelligence, but recognition remains conditional: even after entrusting Tyrion with an investigation, he refuses to let him address him as “Father” until he proves his worth 2 12 21.

His self-control is severe rather than absolute. Joanna’s death exposes profound grief, while Jaime’s Kingsguard appointment briefly reveals weariness and loneliness beneath his composure. Praise is exceptionally restrained: Tygett’s tourney victory earns only a slight nod, and Leon’s political analysis receives the judgment “Acceptable” 1 5 25 27.

Tywin distinguishes between personal affection and protection of the family’s authority. He increases the twins’ security after the bridge attack because spilling Lannister blood inside Casterly Rock must carry a price, yet later expresses indifference to Tyrion’s possible death 10 31.

Abilities & Skills

Political Strategy

Tywin pursues influence through marriage alliances, public displays of strength, and carefully timed intervention.

  • Organizes the Lannisport tourney as an opportunity to seek Cersei’s marriage to Rhaegar 5 7.
  • Uses the journey through the Riverlands to display military discipline and advance marriage prospects 12.
  • Plans to seize King’s Landing while royalist and rebel armies are committed elsewhere 37.
  • Suffers a major reversal when Aerys removes Jaime from the succession through the Kingsguard appointment 27.

Intelligence and Leverage

Tywin assigns investigations according to his sons’ demonstrated strengths and uses financial secrets as political leverage.

  • Tasks Tyrion with tracing wildfire production, storage, and Chelsted’s business accounts 21.
  • Obtains the numbers of Chelsted’s three secret Iron Bank accounts through Tyrion and Pudding Face 25.
  • Directs Leon to assess influential nobles’ desires and weaknesses at Harrenhal 25.

Administration and Economic Assessment

Tywin evaluates territories and rival houses through revenue, production, and infrastructure.

  • Reviews Lannisport tax reports while managing affairs at Casterly Rock 3.
  • Instructs Leon to study Highgarden’s porcelain, silk, wine, and waterworks as indicators of wealth and vulnerability 12.
  • Questions the value of the Wendwater assignment and subsequently monitors its docks, warehouses, and increased tax revenue 21 31.

Military Organization and Security

  • Personally inspects the covered-bridge attack and orders stronger guards, changing routes, and intensified combat training 10.
  • Maintains an orderly, defensively arranged camp near the Gods Eye 25.
  • Secretly assembles the Westerlands army for the march on King’s Landing 37.

Relationships

  • Joanna Lannister — Cousin and beloved wife. Her death becomes the focus of his mourning and accompanies his rejection of their newborn twins 1 2.
  • Leon Lannister — Younger twin son, initially hidden and intended for ornamental accomplishments. Tywin later recognizes his political and economic usefulness but resists his independence 2 11 21 31.
  • Tyrion Lannister — Son and eventual heir after Jaime joins the Kingsguard. Tywin exploits his intelligence while continuing to subject him to contempt and verbal abuse 21 27 48.
  • Jaime Lannister — Eldest son and intended heir. His Kingsguard oath destroys Tywin’s plans for succession and marriage alliances 27.
  • Cersei Lannister — Daughter whose royal marriage is central to Tywin’s ambitions. He rebukes her recklessness when it endangers Lannister blood; she eventually becomes Robert’s queen 7 11 37 49.
  • Kevan Lannister — Younger brother and trusted subordinate involved in security, training, and private political discussions 6 8 11.
  • Tygett Lannister — Younger brother whose desire for recognition receives little encouragement from Tywin 5.
  • Gerion Lannister — Youngest brother. He protects the twins during the tavern confrontation and later escorts them to Highgarden 6 12.
  • Aerys II Targaryen — Childhood friend and king whom Tywin serves as Hand. Their relationship deteriorates into public humiliation and political rivalry, most sharply through the rejection of Cersei and Jaime’s Kingsguard appointment 7 27 28 36.
