Her neighbor seemed to get embarrassed pretty easily too
When the knock came, Luo Lianqing and her cat both looked toward the door in surprise.
Wen Ce knocked three times, then stood outside waiting.
Although he found Luo Lianqing's sudden offer to give him cookies a little strange.
But he remembered how, when he was little, his grandparents' neighbors would share even a few extra vegetables they had grown themselves.
It didn't seem all that unreasonable.
So Wen Ce hadn't thought much of it and came over carrying a small bag of fruit.
Don't ask why it was fruit again. Fruit was the only thing he had at home that was suitable for visiting someone.
The door opened from inside, and Luo Lianqing stood behind it holding a small box.
Once the door opened, they both fell into an odd silence for a moment.
In the end, Luo Lianqing spoke first. "Haha, that was pretty quick."
Wen Ce looked up at her. "Ah, I'm right across the hall, so it's pretty quick."
Then silence fell again.
"Wen Ce, has anyone ever told you that you're really good at killing a conversation?" Luo Lianqing sighed in frustration. "This is the first time I've ever felt like I couldn't keep a conversation going with someone."
Wen Ce sighed too. "I know. That's why I moved out to live on my own."
He looked at Luo Lianqing, standing before him in loungewear with a speechless expression. "I might not be very good at conversation, so please don't mind."
He paused before adding, "It seems a little strange for us to stand in the doorway like this."
What Wen Ce had originally meant was that she could give him the cookies in her hand, and then he could go home.
But Luo Lianqing seemed to misunderstand. She gave him a hesitant look, then asked, "Would you like to come in for a bit?"
Wen Ce: ...
Just as he was wondering how to turn her down, a soft meow sounded. "Meow~"
Wen Ce saw a beautiful Ragdoll cat stroll out from inside, walk up to Luo Lianqing's feet, and look up at him.
Seemingly curious, the cat meowed at Wen Ce again.
Luo Lianqing looked down at the cat by her feet, seeming a little surprised. "Egg Yolk seems to really like you."
Looking at the fluffy cat that seemed so nice to pet, Wen Ce was tempted.
"Is the cat called Egg Yolk?" he heard himself ask.
Luo Lianqing nodded. "Come in. It's rare to see her like someone this much."
As she spoke, Luo Lianqing crouched down, scooped up the cat with one hand, and took a step inside.
Carrying the fruit, Wen Ce ultimately stepped into her home, though he still couldn't resist saying, "It isn't safe to let people into your home so casually."
"Aren't you my neighbor and a student? That's pretty safe." Luo Lianqing walked toward the living room with the cat in one arm and the cookies in her other hand, adding, "I've trained in sanda."
Wen Ce couldn't help chuckling. "If someone really meant you harm, your sanda wouldn't be much use."
Luo Lianqing glanced back at him and said very seriously, "You're the first person of the opposite sex to enter this apartment."
Wen Ce froze. Standing where he was, he looked at the very serious Luo Lianqing, let out an "Ah," then weighed his words before venturing, "My honor?"
Luo Lianqing nodded. "It really is. Before, whenever Egg Yolk saw a man, she'd go straight up and swipe at him. She scared the property management staff half to death."
Wen Ce hadn't expected such a beautiful cat to be so violent.
Just then, Egg Yolk jumped down from Luo Lianqing's arms, circled Wen Ce with light steps, and meowed again.
Luo Lianqing put down the box and noticed the small bag in Wen Ce's hand. "Come sit down. What did you bring?"
"Some fruit for you." Under Egg Yolk's watchful, tigerlike gaze, Wen Ce walked over to the sofa and sat down.
Luo Lianqing reached for the bag in his hand, and their fingers brushed by accident.
Wen Ce shifted slightly. Unlike his warm hand, Luo Lianqing's was a little cool.
Seemingly oblivious, Luo Lianqing took the bag from him and said quietly, "You're too polite. This feels a little strange. Let me wash it so you can have some."
With that, she walked toward the kitchen in something of a hurry.
Wen Ce felt that this turn of events was rather strange. Wasn't I just coming over to pick up some cookies? How did I end up inside her home?
He sighed, feeling a little nervous. He hadn't been close to Luo Lianqing to begin with.
And every time they met, it was pretty awkward.
Sitting in her home now was even more awkward.
As he was thinking this, a sudden weight settled on his legs. The cat called Egg Yolk had jumped onto his lap.
Then she meowed at him again.
Wen Ce hesitated, then reached out and gently stroked her head.
To be fair, petting a cat really did feel good.
Wen Ce stroked her once, then couldn't resist doing it again.
Egg Yolk seemed quite pleased with him and narrowed her eyes.
Wen Ce relaxed a little too. After being petted for a while, Egg Yolk suddenly meowed toward the table.
Wen Ce's hand paused. The only thing on the table was the box of cookies from earlier. He said quietly, "You probably can't eat those."
Clearly dissatisfied with his response, Egg Yolk jumped from his lap onto the table and reached out a paw to scrabble at the box herself.
Wen Ce hurriedly reached out to stop her. "Hey, leave that alone."
But Egg Yolk gave another disgruntled meow.
The sound of running water stopped in the kitchen, and Luo Lianqing came out carrying the fruit.
As soon as she emerged, she saw Wen Ce trying to stop Egg Yolk from pawing at the cookies on the table.
Luo Lianqing's brow twitched, and she hurried over to stop her. "Egg Yolk! What are you doing? Those aren't your cookies!"
Whether Egg Yolk understood that or not, she meowed angrily at Luo Lianqing, then reached out and patted the cookie box.
That gesture really did make her anger clear.
Wen Ce found it rather cute.
Animals had never liked him much, even as a child. This was the first time a kitty had approached him of her own accord, so he couldn't help seeing Egg Yolk through a flattering filter.
Luo Lianqing was afraid Wen Ce would discover something. That would only make her more embarrassed.
So she hurriedly put down what she was holding, scooped Egg Yolk into her arms, and said softly, "Haven't you already had cookies today?"
Egg Yolk wriggled free of her embrace and jumped back into Wen Ce's lap.
She wasn't paying Luo Lianqing any attention anymore.
Luo Lianqing glared at her and called her a little lecher of a cat.
Instead, amusement grew in Wen Ce's eyes as he stroked her silky fur. "She's adorable."
Luo Lianqing nodded. "She is. She's just too mischievous sometimes, and she's afraid of men. You're probably the first male she's ever approached on her own."
"Is Egg Yolk the cat in your profile picture?" Wen Ce regretted the words as soon as they left his mouth.
Because he remembered that embarrassing incident at the supermarket, when he had been sneaking a look at her profile picture and then run into her.
Luo Lianqing sat on the sofa opposite him and said with a smile, "Yes."
She seemed to have discovered that her neighbor got embarrassed easily, so she watched Wen Ce's face and asked leisurely, "Didn't you tap on it to take a look before? You should recognize her, right?"
Sure enough, the person opposite her paused in the middle of petting the cat, then awkwardly reached up to adjust his glasses.
He looked a little at a loss.
