Yan Heqing followed, and the children swarmed after him.
"This is a mixed-use building." Yan Heqing first led Lu Lin to the dormitory. "Offices are on the first and second floors, and rooms 3, 4, and 5 are the children's dormitories."
Lu Lin had come upstairs and looked around when he last visited. He suddenly asked, "Did you used to live here?"
Yan Heqing shook his head and pointed to an abandoned building not far away, its doors and windows removed. "That building has three floors."
"How old are you?" Lu Lin asked.
"5 years old."
Lu Lin was silent for a moment before speaking again, "Let's go upstairs."
Yan Heqing nodded and led Lu Lin to the third floor. The children were still playing, and the classroom was noisy. Upon seeing them, several children rushed up to ask for gifts. One little boy, whose hands were dirty from playing, didn't understand and grabbed Lu Lin's coat, asking, "Uncle, where's the gift you brought?"
Yan Heqing looked at Lu Lin first. Lu Lin wasn't angry, nor did he push them away. He simply took out a handkerchief from his pocket, squatted down, picked up the little boy's hand, and wiped it for him. "You can only take the gift if your hands are clean, otherwise your gift will get dirty, understand?"
The little boy couldn't understand anything else, but he could understand that his gift was dirty. He took the initiative to wipe his hands, afraid of soiling his gift.
After wiping the little boy's hands clean, Lu Lin stood up. Yan Heqing noticed that Lu Lin folded the handkerchief and held it in his hand, not throwing it away immediately. With his other hand, he took out his phone, made a call, and said a few words, asking his employee to bring a gift to the third floor.
A moment later, footsteps could be heard outside the classroom.
Immediately afterwards, a group of employees wearing matching blue T-shirts with the Lu Group's logo embroidered on their chests filed in, carrying large and small boxes.
The leader was a young man wearing frameless glasses. He probably didn't do heavy work often, as he was panting and sweating profusely while carrying a small box. He jogged forward.
Upon catching sight of Yan Heqing, his eyebrows twitched slightly. Wasn't this the coffee shop employee his boss had invited to lunch in the office?
Upon seeing Yan Heqing's work badge again, the assistant realized that his boss's reason for changing the plan and coming to the orphanage earlier was actually something else entirely.
The assistant looked respectfully at Lu Lin, " President Lu, the gifts prepared for the children are being moved upstairs. Shall we distribute them now?"
Lu Lin nodded slightly.
Seeing that they were about to start working, Yan Heqing prepared to leave to clean up.
The assistant, quick as a flash, stepped forward and handed the box to Yan Heqing. "Young man, could you help us distribute these? We're short-handed today, especially with all these children." He smiled politely, "We're a bit overwhelmed."
Yan Heqing took it. "Okay." He squatted down, skillfully tore open the Lu Group's tape on the cardboard box, and opened the lid. Inside were colorful pencil cases. He looked up and asked his assistant, "Are they being collected and distributed together, or are they being picked up individually?"
The gifts brought by the Lu Group quickly piled up against the wall, in great quantity and variety.
The assistant hadn't expected Yan Heqing to react so quickly. He glanced at Lu Lin and asked, "You work here and know the area better than I do. Which one do you think is more suitable?"
Yan Heqing thought for a moment, "If they receive it individually, they can receive it more often." That means more time to look forward to and be happy. The children in the welfare home don't lack supplies, but rather companionship. In this small world, they have very few opportunities to interact with people. Every time volunteers or charity groups come, it's their happiest time.
The assistant looked at Lu Lin again, and seeing that Lu Lin did not object, he immediately nodded, "Do as you say."
Yan Heqing fell silent and quickly began working.
While everyone else used scissors or a knife to remove the tape, Yan Heqing tore it off by hand. He also distributed the pencil cases in an orderly manner. Lu Lin watched him quietly from a distance, a dark light shimmering in his deep black eyes.
People also went up to the fourth and fifth floors to distribute gifts. It was almost noon before all the gifts were given out.
The workers arrived to install the television.
Each classroom has been equipped with a new television.
Auntie Zhang beamed with joy as she invited the Lu Group employees to lunch in the cafeteria. Having spent the morning with the employees, the children were already familiar with Lu Group and eagerly wanted to eat with them. The assistant immediately asked Lu Lin, and upon receiving his approval, he politely smiled and said, "It would be impolite to refuse."
Yan Heqing also went to the cafeteria, but he didn't eat there. He got more than a dozen meals and carried them to the 5th floor.
The children on the 5th floor need their meals delivered.
In the girls' dormitory, the other girls quietly started eating after receiving their meals, but one little girl called out softly to Yan Heqing, "Brother."
This little girl was the friend of the mute girl from last time. She was paralyzed in both legs and had been confined to bed. Yan Heqing bent down and patiently asked, "What's wrong?"
The little girl was a little timid, but she remembered that this older brother had helped her change her diaper that morning. She pulled out the gift she had received from under her pillow—a square, transparent cube, like crystal. Full of curiosity, she asked, "Brother, what is this?"
Yan Heqing examined it; it looked like an ornament, and somewhat like a transparent Rubik's Cube, but it seemed unable to be turned. Just as he was about to take it to examine it, he heard footsteps approaching from behind.
A figure then descended, accompanied by a faint aura, somewhat like the scent of pine needles after a snowfall. Long, slender fingers took the Cube of Light from the girl's hand. "This is the Cube of Light."
Yan Heqing didn't move; if he turned around now, he would bump into Lu Lin.
The little girl continued, "What is the use of the Cube of Light?"
The boy's hair had a faint shampoo scent, like the fragrance of plum blossoms. Lu Lin didn't move. He explained to the little girl, "It can capture sunlight."
Hearing the sunlight, the little girl's big eyes instantly brightened. She hadn't seen sunlight in so long, and she asked expectantly, "How do I catch it? Uncle, can you teach me?"
Lu Lin said, "Not today, there's no sun."
The little girl was visibly disappointed and deflated. Then Lu Lin said again, "But you can see a rainbow."
The other girls also stopped eating and looked over at the same time; they also wanted to see the rainbow.
Lu Lin gently patted Yan Heqing's shoulder with his free hand, "Go and draw the curtains."
Yan Heqing now understands the principle behind the Cube of Light.
