Background / History

The Old Beggar traveled from Changle Prefecture to Great Zhen's Capital City with the young beggar You'er to attend the Water-Land Dharma Assembly. Though he lived and dressed as a beggar, he entered the capital by declaring that he had come by imperial decree and immediately recognized Ji Yuan as no ordinary blind man. 233

At the assembly, Yan Chang recommended him to Emperor Yuande. The Old Beggar stated that he wished to take two disciples—one who had suffered the hardships of mortal life and one who had enjoyed its glory—and asked whether the Emperor would surrender the dragon throne. The court treated his words as treason. 242

He accepted execution rather than demonstrate his abilities for the Emperor. After being publicly beheaded on Yongning Street, his headless body rose again; the act involved severing an “Origin of Fate,” rather than merely deceiving observers with illusion. 243 246 He later reflected that the affair was not worth the consequences, while Ji Yuan judged that it had not violated either his conscience or the Way. 245 246

When Emperor Yuande neared death, the Old Beggar returned to the palace at Ji Yuan's request. After the Emperor's soul left his body, he secretly fastened a thin red rope around it before departing. 280 282

Qianyuan Sect cultivators later recognized him as their Martial Granduncle, despite his insistence that they had mistaken him for someone else. His continued reluctance to return to the sect conceals an enduring concern for its disciples and survival. 487 782
