Who broke the glass 1 Xun Yin paused, his fingers slowly...
"You'd better hurry back and check on your captain. The place where he was shot earlier has probably been bleeding this whole time."
Zhuo Wumian's voice gradually faded into the distance. Xun Yin drew his gun and turned. The river rippled faintly beneath the bridge, but the man was nowhere to be seen. Xun Yin's expression was icy. His fingers tightened one by one, and he stood frozen for a long moment before abruptly turning and running back.
With Zhuo Wumian's plunge into the water, silence suddenly returned beside the shipping containers. Pei Qingyu's vision briefly darkened again. This time, he could no longer remain standing. He staggered back two steps and slammed into the container behind him without breaking his fall.
The sudden impact nearly knocked the breath out of him, and even his consciousness began to blur. When Xun Yin ran back up from beneath the bridge, all he saw was his captain with his head hanging low, his sharply defined fingers pressed desperately against his chest, his body sliding limply down the container as though nothing supported him.
"Captain!"
Startled, Xun Yin barely caught Pei Qingyu before he hit the ground. The instant he caught him, his hand touched something wet. Only when he opened his palm did he see it covered in bright red.
"Don't panic." Pei Qingyu was cold all over. His heart pounded violently beyond his control, leaving him unable to catch his breath. He wanted to say more, but lost consciousness in an instant.
"Wang Yu, call an ambulance!"
Xun Yin pressed his earpiece and growled in a low voice. Wang Yu sounded somewhat panicked on the other end too, answering as he immediately made the call.
Xun Yin laid him faceup in his arms and carefully lifted his clothes. The bandages over the wound were completely soaked in blood. Pei Qingyu was ice-cold and trembling faintly, his heart hurting worse with every wave of pain. His eyelids fluttered as he tried to open his eyes, but he had no strength at all.
The medication Song Xuanmo had injected him with had worn off. His fragile heart could not bear the burden of his frail body. Pei Qingyu coughed chokingly for a long while, then suddenly shuddered and began gasping uncontrollably.
"Captain, Captain."
Xun Yin took off his clothes and wrapped them around him. Pei Qingyu's head fell back limply. He slowly began slipping into unconsciousness, and the hand pressed desperately against his chest gradually lost its strength.
Afraid Pei Qingyu would choke on his own saliva, Xun Yin hurriedly propped him halfway up in his arms, letting the nearly unconscious man rest his head against his shoulder and neck. Pei Qingyu was struggling terribly for breath, his fingertips and lips beginning to turn faintly blue-purple. Even with medicine held beneath his tongue, his condition seemed no better at all.
"Xun Yin, the ambulance will be here any minute!" Wang Yu suddenly called through the earpiece. "Xiaochen just arrived with a first aid kit. He's heading your way."
Xun Yin murmured an acknowledgment and said nothing more. His attention was entirely on Pei Qingyu's condition. Only when Su Xiaochen's breathless voice came from beside him did he spare a little attention to listen closely.
"A cardiac episode has caused low blood oxygen. There are pronounced crackles in his chest." Su Xiaochen removed his stethoscope, quickly took out a portable oxygen bag, and deftly fitted the mask over Pei Qingyu's face. With one arm, Xun Yin held Pei Qingyu and helped stanch the bleeding; with his other hand, he carefully counted his pulse. Neither of them spoke.
After an unknown amount of time, Pei Qingyu's oxygen deprivation improved slightly. His breathing was still rapid, but at least it was less labored. Xun Yin visibly relaxed and rebandaged Pei Qingyu's wound. Even the intense pain only drew a muffled groan from Pei Qingyu, without the slightest sign that he would wake.
Su Xiaochen also breathed a sigh of relief. Just as he was about to take out more medicine and put it in Pei Qingyu's mouth, he suddenly heard Xun Yin say softly beside him, "...Thank you, Xiaochen."
"Hey, what are you thanking me for? It was my mentor who insisted I bring the first aid kit."
Xun Yin's expression changed, but Su Xiaochen was focused on watching Pei Qingyu's condition and noticed nothing. Slowly squeezing the oxygen bag, he said, "I used to be a proper doctor. I only switched to forensic medicine because of my mentor."
Xun Yin composed his expression and looked up at him. Su Xiaochen scratched his head and was just about to continue when a faint, breathy voice beside them suddenly interrupted. "Why bring up something from so long ago? Do you regret it now?"
"I've never regretted it!"
Seeing that Pei Qingyu had regained some awareness, Su Xiaochen hurriedly began examining him. Pei Qingyu's mind was still very foggy, and keeping his eyes open made him dizzy. He simply closed them and fumbled to lift his hand to hook a finger around Xun Yin's beside him, but unexpectedly pulled at his wound and started coughing again.
"Don't move." Helpless, Xun Yin reached out and hooked his finger around Pei Qingyu's little finger himself. Pei Qingyu was instantly reassured. In his haze, he curved his lips slightly and said softly, "Don't be angry anymore."
"I'm not angry." Seeing that he was about to fall asleep again, Xun Yin hurriedly prompted him to say a little more. "You're still moving around when you feel this awful."
"My heart hurts. That's why I need to hold on to you." Pei Qingyu wanted to hook his little finger around his and swing it, but all Xun Yin actually felt was a tremble against his palm, like a kitten scratching him with its paw.
The sound of an ambulance came from nearby. Seeing Pei Qingyu's eyelids close tightly again, Xun Yin suddenly asked, "Captain, when Zhuo Wumian wanted to hurt you, did you really agree?"
Pei Qingyu's breathing was slow and shallow, and he seemed to have slipped into unconsciousness again. Xun Yin felt faintly disappointed, yet also seemed relieved. Just as he silently helped the medical personnel lift Pei Qingyu into the ambulance, he suddenly heard Pei Qingyu speak quietly.
"No... Your captain was lying to him."
Chapter 12: Who broke the glass 1 Xun Yin paused, his fingers slowly...
Although Pei Qingyu's absence left the Special Case Team in low spirits, the work of wrapping up the case still proceeded quickly.
After evidence was collected, Shi Qian was handed over to the Narcotics Team for his involvement in drug trafficking, while the main suspect, Zhuo Wumian, remained missing. Xun Yin personally organized the evidence and combined this case with the one in which Pei Qingyu had been injured six months earlier.
"Xun Yin, we checked the DNA database using the traces of Zhuo Wumian's blood collected from your gun grip. There's no match."
Sitting on a stool, Song Ranran stretched, then slumped backward without the slightest trace of ladylike grace. Puzzled, she said, "How did a drug dealer this big never turn up in an investigation before? How could he not be in the database..."
"Why not ask the Narcotics Team?" Lin Shichu strolled over and tapped Song Ranran on the back like an old father. She immediately sat up straight with a guilty air, turning her head to look around as she muttered, "Lin Shichu, stop tapping my back all the time. I keep thinking my mom's here telling me to sit properly..."
