Chapter 30: Who lost their property 1 "Then I'm still better than you, you're sick...
"Why am I in the hospital every time we close a case?"
Pei Qingyu sat propped against the headboard and asked glumly, "Every time, you're the one bringing me the closing report to sign, A-Xun... Can't I do it myself just once?"
"Because you've been working nonstop, Captain. Now that the case is closed, it's the perfect opportunity for you to get some proper rest."
Xun Yin answered earnestly, "Honestly, if the closing report didn't require your signature, Captain, I wouldn't even want you seeing this."
"What did you say, Deputy Captain Xun?"
Pei Qingyu's eyes widened slightly. An oxygen mask still covered his face, and the moisture in his breath misted it with every word. His breathing was still somewhat rapid, but his voice was unhurried, as though he was in a good mood.
Xun Yin lowered his head, the corners of his mouth lifting slightly. Ignoring the shock on Pei Qingyu's face, he simply took the pen and document envelope from his hands. Then he tucked the blanket around him, took his wrist, and began carefully counting his pulse.
The hospital room fell silent. Pei Qingyu watched Xun Yin for a while, and when he saw that he really had no intention of returning the case file, he had no choice but to give up. While inwardly grumbling that the little wolf cub was getting increasingly hard to discipline, he idly reached out to play with the loose strands of hair over Xun Yin's forehead.
Pei Qingyu's underlying health had suffered severely this time. Although he had regained consciousness, he was still very weak. After sitting for a while, he grew sleepy and unconsciously leaned back against the headboard. His eyelids gradually grew heavy, and his body began slipping downward.
His hand had been unconsciously twirling Xun Yin's hair. Now it slowly dropped, accidentally brushing Xun Yin's cheek.
Xun Yin caught his captain's slender hand, bloodshot threads slowly appearing in his eyes. He stared at Pei Qingyu, whose consciousness was growing increasingly hazy, for a few seconds. In the end, he did nothing, only gently returning his hand beneath the blanket and carefully supporting his shoulders as he helped him lie down.
In his daze, Pei Qingyu sensed a distance in Xun Yin's movements that had never been there before. The change made him inexplicably sad.
That sadness left him deeply unsettled, as though he had returned to the day he and Xun Yin had argued. Before sinking into darkness, Pei Qingyu struggled and murmured softly, "A-Xun, please don't be angry with me anymore..."
Xun Yin froze. Pei Qingyu's slightly cool fingertips scratched at his palm, but before he could react, his palm suddenly felt empty again.
Pei Qingyu's fingertips slipped away, and he sank into a hazy dream.
Xun Yin seemed to understand Pei Qingyu's unusual behavior. He stared at his half-open palm, his expression dark and unreadable.
Only when the faint warmth in his palm had almost entirely faded did he finally answer softly, "Captain, I'm not..."
The rest of Xun Yin's words were swallowed by the hum of the oxygen concentrator. He stared at the sleeping Pei Qingyu for a long while before finally rising and hurrying toward the door.
"What's wrong? Did you two have a fight?"
Song Xuanmo walked over carrying a stack of medical documents. Looking up, he caught Xun Yin closing the hospital room door without a word. "You stayed by Xiao Yu's side every day while he was unconscious. Now that he's awake, why are you coming out so soon?"
"No. He's asleep again. I'm going to buy him something to eat. He'll be hungry later." Xun Yin offered a brief explanation, then hurried away. Just as he rounded the corner, his phone suddenly rang.
"Captain Yan?"
Xun Yin answered the call, his brow furrowing before gradually relaxing. "All right. It's fine. Go ahead and tell the captain. I'll stay with him the whole time. It's okay."
He gave another murmur of assent and hung up, then turned and quickly headed back.
Inside the hospital room.
"Oh, Xiao Yu, you're not asleep?" Song Xuanmo had just looked up when he saw Pei Qingyu's face turned to the side, silently watching the door. Seeing that it was Song Xuanmo rather than Xun Yin who had entered, Pei Qingyu instinctively averted his eyes, then looked back a few seconds later as if to cover it up.
"No, I really was asleep just now, but my chest felt tight and I woke up because I couldn't breathe," Pei Qingyu answered casually before asking, "Where's A-Xun?"
"He said he was going to buy you something to eat."
Song Xuanmo reached out to count Pei Qingyu's carotid pulse. After a while, he said softly, "Your old injury flared up this time, and the damage to your heart is fairly serious. Chest tightness and dizziness are normal symptoms, and they'll continue for a while. If you really feel too uncomfortable, have Little Xun turn on the oxygen concentrator for you at night. Otherwise, you won't get any proper rest if you keep waking up because you can't breathe."
Pei Qingyu gave an offhand murmur of assent. Only after a while did he register what he had said. He hurriedly turned his head. "Brother Song, don't tell A-Xun yet. Let me think about it some more."
"Why? Don't you want to stay at his place anymore?"
"It's not like I don't have a home. Why should I keep staying at his place..." Pei Qingyu said quietly.
"All right, as long as you've thought it through." Song Xuanmo knew something must have gone wrong between them, but he didn't press him, merely touching Pei Qingyu's forehead.
Pei Qingyu let out a breath and composed himself. When he lifted his face again, his voice had returned to normal. He gave Song Xuanmo an ingratiating smile and spoke again.
"Brother Song, since I've been so good, could you lend me your phone?"
"Of course." To Pei Qingyu's surprise, Song Xuanmo agreed immediately.
Pei Qingyu froze. Before he could say anything else, Song Xuanmo took out his phone, tapped it a few times, and handed it straight over. Pei Qingyu accepted it in a daze and looked down, only to find that a call had already been placed.
"Hello?"
"Xiao Yu, are you misbehaving again?"
Pei Qingyan's voice came from the other end, a hint of teasing in its sternness.
"Brother, I'm not..." Looking at Song Xuanmo, who was smiling faintly without a word, Pei Qingyu seemed to understand something and denied it helplessly.
"Little Mo is softhearted. Every time you beg him, he can't hold out against you. So I told him to call me directly if you asked him for his phone."
