The combined fleet sailed on, but the oppressive atmosphere of Black Port still hung over everyone. The slaves' tears, blood, and suffering had left even Luffy, the most optimistic of them, much quieter. Amid that stifling mood, Pluton's navigation system picked up a peculiar signal-an uncharted island was emitting a mournful frequency.
"This energy signature..." Sabo pulled up the records. "It matches the 'Island of the Departed' recorded in the Revolutionary Army's archives. Legend says it's a place where people can meet the dead."
Ace's eyes stirred. "Meet... the dead?" Luffy pressed down his straw hat. "Shanks said... people who die live on in our memories." Allen extended his Time Perception. The island's flow of time was unusually sorrowful. "That place is filled with... lingering longing."
As the fleet approached the Island of the Departed, the sorrow in the air was almost tangible. Gray mist shrouded the island, its vegetation was dark-hued, and even the waves breaking against the shore sounded like sighs.
The island's only resident was an old woman who called herself the "Gravekeeper." She wore a gray robe, and her eyes held a thousand years of sorrow.
"You can hear the island's call..." The Gravekeeper's voice sounded like wind blowing past gravestones. "Because all of you have farewells left unfinished in your hearts."
She led them to the "Spring of Remembrance" at the island's center. Its water was like a mirror, reflecting not the present, but scenes from memory.
Luffy saw the moment Ace died in the spring and clenched his fists; Ace saw Rouge's smile before her death, and his flames trembled faintly; Sabo saw the victims of the great fire in the Goa Kingdom, and his steel pipe hummed; Whitebeard saw his departed sons and struck the ground with his naginata; everyone saw their deepest regrets in the spring.
The Gravekeeper explained softly, "The Island of the Departed is not a place to wallow in sorrow, but a sacred place for learning how to turn mourning into the strength to move forward."
She told them the island's origins: an ancient king who had lost all his loved ones discovered a way to give mourning physical form amid his overwhelming grief, creating this place where the living could make peace with the dead.
"But recently, the island's balance has been disrupted." The Gravekeeper pointed sorrowfully at the spring. "Some feelings of mourning have grown too intense, forming 'vengeful spirits' that try to trap the living in sorrow forever."
Just as she said, distorted figures began to emerge from the gray mist, letting out heartbreaking wails. Anyone they touched would sink into deep sorrow, unable to escape.
"These vengeful spirits must be purified." The Gravekeeper handed Allen an ancient funerary urn. "Use this to collect the excess mourning, but the one guiding it must have a strong heart."
Allen took the funerary urn. Through his Time Perception, he could tell it was a vessel capable of holding emotions. He led the others in beginning the purification ritual.
The process was extraordinarily difficult. Every vengeful spirit represented a heart-wrenching sorrow:
· A mother's despair at losing her child;
· A warrior's guilt over failing to protect his companions;
· A lover's longing for someone forever separated from them by death;
To purify them, they first had to understand and empathize with that sorrow, then transform it with hope.
While purifying the vengeful spirit of a pirate who had died protecting him, Luffy broke into loud sobs for the first time. "I don't want anyone to die for me! I want everyone to live!" Facing the vengeful spirit of a victim of a fire he had caused, Ace expressed deep remorse. "My power... should protect, not destroy." Sabo soothed the vengeful spirit of a Revolutionary Army comrade. "Your sacrifice won't be in vain. We'll keep fighting." Whitebeard promised the vengeful spirit of a son who had died for him, "Gurararara! Pops will keep living for you all, too!"
Allen faced the most difficult challenge-a massive vengeful spirit formed from the mourning of countless slaves. Its sorrow was so heavy that even time nearly froze.
"We... hurt so much..." "Why us..." "We want to go home..."
Countless wails flooded his mind, nearly overwhelming Allen. But he did not resist. Instead, he opened his own emotions and fully accepted that sorrow.
"I hear you..." he said softly. "Your pain won't disappear, but it won't be in vain, either."
He poured the promise of justice at Black Port and hope for the future into the vengeful spirit. The enormous spirit was gradually purified, turning into warm motes of light that flowed into the funerary urn.
When the last vengeful spirit was purified, the funerary urn gave off a gentle glow, and the excess mourning was transformed into pure emotional energy.
The Gravekeeper nodded with relief. "You have learned the most important lesson-mourning is not an ending, but a continuation of love."
As thanks, she gave each of them a "Mourning Badge," which could provide emotional protection when needed.
As they left, the sky over the Island of the Departed seemed a little brighter. Sorrow remained in everyone's eyes, but now there was also a measure of peace and resolve.
Luffy looked at Ace and Sabo, smiling for the first time in a long while. "I won't let anyone die again!" Ace ruffled his hair. "Idiot, we're all going to live!" Sabo adjusted his goggles. "For the sake of the departed, we must cherish the living all the more." Whitebeard laughed heartily. "Gurararara! Boys, let's have a feast! Let's celebrate being alive!"
Standing at Pluton's bow, Allen looked back at the receding Island of the Departed. The funerary urn in his hands was warm and heavy.
True strength was not ignoring sorrow, but carrying it and continuing forward.
This heavy mourning would become the power to protect life.
Pluton sailed toward its next destination, carrying the blessings of the dead and the resolve of the living.
And this power that transcended life and death might create miracles.
