After leaving the Illusory Light Ocean, the Combined Fleet obtained a mysterious set of coordinates-Echo Valley. According to the guidance of the Prism of Light, it held an ancient civilization's secrets of memory and forgetting.
"Echo Valley..." Sabo consulted the records. "According to these accounts, it preserves the echoes of every memory in existence, but also offers the choice to forget." Ace frowned. "Memory and forgetting? What's there to choose?" Luffy's rubber face looked puzzled. "Isn't remembering the taste of meat a good thing?" Allen extended his Time Perception, his expression growing grave. "The flow of time there... is like a whirlpool of memories. Every echo carries a heavy past..."
As Pluton approached Echo Valley, a heart-stopping resonance enveloped everyone. The valley consisted of countless crystals, each storing a memory. Countless voices echoed through the air, like millions of people whispering at once.
"Welcome, travelers of memory." An indistinct figure formed from echoes appeared. "I am Echo of the valley. Here, you can relive any memory, or choose to forget any part of your past."
Echo guided them deeper into the valley. As they ventured farther in, each person began hearing echoes of their own memories:
· Luffy heard the oath he had sworn when becoming brothers with Ace and Sabo;
· Ace heard Rouge's dying words;
· Sabo heard the Revolutionary Army's declaration of ideals;
· Even Allen heard the chaos of the day he had transmigrated...
These memories were so vivid that it felt as though they were experiencing them again. Some people lost themselves in happy recollections, while others trembled at painful memories.
"The echoes will grow stronger and stronger," Echo warned. "You must hold on to yourselves, or the memories will consume you."
Sure enough, the echoes of memories began taking physical form! Scenes from the past reappeared in the valley and could even interact with people! Luffy saw the scene of Sabo's "death" and desperately tried to change history; Ace saw Rouge suffering, and his rage nearly spiraled out of control; Sabo saw a vision of the revolution's failure and sank into deep despair; even Allen saw the instant Ace died during the Paramount War and nearly used Time Jump to go back and change the past!
"These are all echoes! They aren't real!" Echo reminded them anxiously, but many had already lost themselves in their memories.
Even more terrifyingly, a group of "Memory Thieves" appeared! They stole precious memories, left painful recollections behind, and even tampered with memories!
"The Memory Thieves are Imu's lackeys!" Echo revealed. "He is trying to erase every memory of resistance, leaving only a history of obedience!"
A fierce battle erupted! The Memory Thieves' abilities were extraordinarily bizarre:
· They could steal memories, making their targets forget important things;
· They could implant false memories, creating confusion;
· They could even lock memories, trapping their targets within specific recollections!
The Combined Fleet was plunged into a bitter struggle! Everyone was fighting their own memories: "I forgot why I'm fighting!" "This memory is fake!" "I can't get out of this memory!"
Allen channeled his Power of Time. "Time Anchoring: Memory Truth!" He helped everyone distinguish truth from falsehood, but there were too many Memory Thieves!
At the critical moment, Echo made a sacrifice. "Use my echo energy! Remember, true memories aren't a burden, but strength!"
It turned into pure echo energy and merged into everyone's bodies. In an instant, all their memories became clear and orderly. Painful memories became experience, and happy memories became strength.
In a flash of inspiration, Allen combined the echo energy with his Power of Time. "Time Weaving: Great Wall of Memories!"
Using everyone's memories as building blocks, he constructed a defensive line of memories that the Memory Thieves could not breach! Even more astonishingly, sharing memories brought the fleet an unprecedented level of coordination-everyone could draw on the experience and wisdom of others!
The Memory Thieves were driven back, but the valley began to destabilize! Excessive memory resonance had triggered a "memory tsunami," and all the memories were about to erupt out of control!
"You must choose!" Echo's final voice resounded. "Keep every memory, and the valley will collapse; forget some memories, and the valley can stabilize!"
A difficult choice. Every memory was precious, but sacrifices had to be made.
In the end, everyone chose to forget-not painful memories, but those that were too personal and might affect their judgment. For example:
· Allen forgot the specific details of his transmigration, retaining only his knowledge;
· Ace forgot the pain of Rouge's death, retaining only her love;
· Luffy forgot the torment of helplessness, retaining only his determination to strive;
· Sabo forgot the shadow of the revolution's failure, retaining only the light of his ideals.
This selective forgetting stabilized the valley and allowed everyone to focus more on the present.
At the valley's core, Allen discovered the ultimate wisdom of the ancient memory guardians: memories were meant not to be wallowed in, but to be learned from. True wisdom lay not in remembering everything, but in knowing what to remember and what to let go.
Imu's distortion lay in his attempt to control all memories and create a unified view of history, which instead cost him the true meaning of memory.
When they left Echo Valley, everyone received a "memory crystal," which could store important memories and allow them to revisit them when needed.
The fleet became more focused on the present-not forgetting the past, but no longer being bound by it. This sense of liberation brought new strength.
Luffy still treasured his memories, but was no longer troubled by them; Ace still remembered his mother, but was no longer consumed by pain; Sabo still learned from his experiences, but was no longer defined by failure; even the most nostalgic among them learned to set down their burdens.
Standing at Pluton's bow and looking back at Echo Valley as it gradually receded, Allen held a memory crystal that shimmered with the light of choice.
A true master of memory was not someone who remembered everything, but someone who knew how to choose what to remember.
This wisdom of choice would guide them forward, unburdened.
Pluton sailed toward a new journey, carrying acceptance of the past and focus on the future.
And that focus might well be the key to resisting Imu's control over memories.
