Background / History

Previous Life

Zhou Jinian grew up in the neglected third branch of a prosperous village family. His grandmother’s disdain for his parents helped drive his determination to gain rank and secure an honorable old age for them. After passing the provincial examination, he was appointed magistrate of a remote, impoverished county, but sought a faster route upward through an alliance with a vice director of the Central Secretariat 2.

The vice director’s daughter died from a congenital illness on the eve of their wedding. Zhou Jinian buried her as his principal wife, never married another principal wife, and took no concubines afterward. His career nevertheless advanced until he became director of the Central Secretariat, also called the right chancellor 2.

Xie Ning entered his household as a study attendant after Zhou Wenshu broke their engagement. Following a drunken encounter, Xie Ning was taken in as a concubine and confined within the Zhou residence. Zhou Jinian understood the depth of his feelings only after a political enemy poisoned him and Xie Ning sacrificed his life through a blood exchange to save him. Zhou Jinian subsequently destroyed his enemies, but lived out his remaining years regretting Xie Ning’s death 1 2 3.

Rebirth

Zhou Jinian awakens in his eighteen-year-old body with his memories intact. Recognizing that he has returned to the period when a koi began parasitizing Xie Ning, he resolves to marry him immediately and keep him safe in water 1.

His knowledge does not make the second life predictable. Family injuries and other incidents unfold differently after his intervention, forcing him to abandon the assumption that he can simply follow his memories. He instead concentrates on earning money, strengthening himself, and protecting his family in the present 22 23.

Appearance

  • Build: Tall and initially slender; develops a sturdy, muscular physique with broad shoulders and a narrow waist through exercise and manual work 1 35 41.
  • Features: Straight, striking brows; narrow black eyes; thin lips; handsome, well-formed features 1 6.
  • Hands: Long fingers, defined knuckles, and faintly visible veins on the backs of his hands 20.
  • Bearing: Stern, imposing, and unusually authoritative for an eighteen-year-old, reflecting decades spent in positions of power 1 6.
  • Clothing: Wears scholarly robes and a hair crown in town, but changes into a short cotton tunic and close-fitting trousers for mountain travel 10 15.

Personality

Zhou Jinian is reserved and habitually solemn. Early after his rebirth, he tries to reassure Lin Jin with a smile but finds that years of seriousness have made the expression unfamiliar. His cold appearance conceals considerable patience: he listens attentively to his parents’ repeated advice and gently comforts Xie Ning through illness and fear 2 18 20.

His second life changes the purpose of his ambition. Rather than treating high office as an end in itself, he wants his family to have peace, stability, and sufficient food and clothing. He continues pursuing the examinations because official success can improve their circumstances, but willingly copies books, farms, and sells food despite social prejudice against scholars engaging in trade 14 23 26.

He remains calculating and capable of ruthlessness. In his previous life, he exterminated his political enemies; after rebirth, he more often uses carefully chosen arguments, family obligations, and concern for scholarly reputation to counter his relatives. He also recognizes the limits of his present position, avoiding unnecessary confrontation with powerful local families while he is only a xiucai 1 2 13 37 50.
