Background and History
Merchant Training and Inheritance
Gray trained as a traveling merchant of the Graycast Corridor. His work combined commerce with intelligence gathering: he carried goods through roughly twenty settlements, recorded changes along his route, and reported developments to Great Labyrinth City. These reports helped the geographically isolated Corridor monitor the continent’s balance of power 241.
He inherited both his route and the small mobile fortress Antasia from his master, Fener. He also hoped to visit the extraordinary landscapes his master had described but never seen, fulfilling the older man’s unrealized dream 154 280 816 820.
Gray and Nora maintained a home in a two-story repair shop in Great Labyrinth City that specialized in repairing mechanically modified people. His master’s younger brother and fellow apprentice operated a fortress repair station and remained an important elder in his life 242 1099.
Contact with Ed and the Eternal Domain Knight
Gray traded with the settlement led by Ed, adding it after Dragonborn Village as the final stop on his route. His stock included Graycast Corridor weapons and dried aberration parts 147 280.
After leaving, he encountered Xilǐ'er, an Eternal Domain knight who denounced him as a monster. Gray initially invoked his civilian status and tried to negotiate, but refused to allow the knight aboard his fortress. He armed himself with inherited mechanical gauntlets and half plate while secretly preparing the fortress’s powerful crossbow 154 155.
Xilǐ'er pierced Gray’s heart, but Gray held the lance—and therefore his opponent—in place until the concealed weapon fired. The bolt pinned both knight and horse to the ground. Gray survived through emergency repairs and his backup heart, only to discover that both opponents were empty suits of armor 156 157.
When the armor and broken weapons began reconstructing themselves, Gray fled rather than risk a second fight 157.
Corpse Tide and Rescue
On a later journey, Gray encountered Blood Corpses far west of the region where he believed they were contained. Pursued to a river, he fought from the Antasia before attempting a zip-line escape. The Blood Corpse leader caught him, and an infected scratch forced Gray to cut flesh from his own leg 282 283 284 285.
Gray sacrificed his left wrist to escape the leader’s grip and severed the zip line, dropping them into the river. He used the creature’s movement to reach shore, then destroyed its brain with his remaining blades. By that point, infection had already spread through his legs and internal organs 285 286.
Using an emergency device inside his chest to remain alive, Gray broke his own spine and abandoned the infected lower portion of his body. He salvaged metal from the remains to protect his chest, then dragged himself west with his hook and fist blade while carrying Ed’s World Tree ornament. Soul Returners eventually found him and received an emergency quest to bring him to Ed 286 287.
Recovery and Work for the Second Holy See
Ed restored enough of Gray’s machinery for him to use his left hand and move with a wooden hammer. Gray pledged personal friendship regardless of whatever relationship developed between their factions. He then helped Ed with mechanical equipment and plans for Gungnir’s training 294 298.
While developing aug-suits, Gray suffered a catastrophic mechanical failure and collapsed. His condition was identified as rejection sickness associated with his earlier injuries. Willow and Ed treated him by reducing his mechanical affinity, replacing his brass components with wood, and regenerating missing human parts from his genes 347 349 352 353.
After recovering, Gray continued engineering work, helped repair the Antasia, and fought alongside Xilǐ'er against Motley. He eventually prepared to return home with an upgraded fortress, a life-support system, and Bennett to help repel Blood Corpses 398 410 417 480.
Trade and the Machine Spirit Discovery
Gray’s return initially led to detention when Corridor authorities discovered Bennett aboard the fortress. He defended the Second Holy See’s legitimacy and argued that its food supplies complemented the Corridor’s bio-armor expertise. His subsequent account of his achievements credited him with establishing friendly relations, a defensive alliance, and technological exchange between the factions 490 492 495 1131.
Trade became frequent enough for Great Labyrinth City to assign another merchant crew to alternate with Gray, providing a monthly service where his own round trip had previously taken two months. He also carried custom mechanical arms supplied by prosthetics workshops seeking customers abroad 727 750.
During another dangerous crossing, the Antasia began operating independently and speaking to him. It remembered his predecessors and said it had watched him grow up. Gray concluded that its earlier self-awareness and its newly acquired ability to communicate were separate developments 818 819 820.
He suspected that exposure to a vampire grand duke’s power, together with the World Tree creation aboard the fortress, had enabled the change. This remained his proposed explanation rather than a fully established mechanism 820 933.
Grand Foundry Master Election
Gray’s candidacy rested on three principal achievements 1089 1131:
- Establishing relations and trade with the Second Holy See.
- Bringing back fortress modifications that absorbed nutrients from soil and delayed self-consumption.
- Discovering a means of activating machine spirits.
Although he passed the first two selection rounds, the authorities had declared him dead. He had to return in person to restore his eligibility, and his modest background left him with little public recognition or an established political team 1090 1097 1099 1100.
Ed sponsored a five-hundred-player escort mission. When the journey fell behind schedule, Soul Returners fitted the Antasia with hundreds of stationary bicycles; Gray pedaled alongside them while other players campaigned for him in Great Labyrinth City 1090 1117.
During his election speech, the machine spirit of The King of Fall Resistance, I Guess demonstrated its capabilities by dismantling and reassembling itself while replacing worn blades. Gray won the election and publicly declared that machine spirits would lead the Corridor into a new future 1135 1138.
Succession and Public Office
During the handover, Balund taught Gray the Corridor’s history and warned that its highest office demanded a willingness to sacrifice everything. Gray then learned that the familiar gray-robed elder was not the whole truth behind the Grand Foundry Master: Aiboke existed within an enormous mechanical mainframe resembling a metal coffin 1139 1140 1141 1142.
The revelations forced Gray and Nora to confront the personal cost of succession. By the time he settled into office, however, Gray regarded himself as Great Labyrinth City’s “mascot” and planned to pursue machine-spirit research and other inventions alongside his public duties 1144 1145 1162.
He later advised the city on personnel investigations and security screening. After an assassination plot culminated in a banquet attack, he funded reconstruction and paid the Concrete Pouring Club’s contract in full before work began. Its crews rebuilt the final ruined street by October of Royal Calendar Year 909 1163 1259 1260 1261 1280.
Appearance
- Face: Square-faced, with a full dark-brown beard that makes him appear older than he is 156 726.
- Merchant clothing: Commonly wears a top hat and an elaborate, bulky coat. The coat conceals defensive mechanisms 144 155 726.
- Original modifications: Exposed brass crankshafts, rods, and other mechanisms surrounded surviving human organs. His voice carried the metallic “Great Labyrinth City mechanical accent” 155 352.
- Reconstructed body: Wooden mechanical arms and chest structures replace his former brass parts, while missing human flesh is regenerated. His metallic vocal quaver disappears after surgery 352 353 398.
- Official attire: Wears a tailored gray formal suit to the banquet, with Aiboke-made soft armor concealed beneath it 1259.
Personality
Gray combines commercial opportunism with professional courtesy. He respects other settlements’ boundaries, approaches civilized hosts with goodwill, and understands why prosthetics makers use him to advertise their work. He is also willing to resell salvaged curiosities at a substantial markup 145 156 750.
His strongest quality is improvisation under pressure. Ed considers him exceptionally capable of adapting in a crisis, a judgment supported by Gray’s concealed-crossbow trap, river escape, and desperate self-amputation. His courage does not make him fearless: he is shaken by resurrection, remembers his mutilation with horror, and avoids joining an expedition against a possible vampire grand duke 157 285 286 1006 1135.
He remains deeply attached to his humanity, Nora, and the Graycast Corridor. Losing flesh troubles him because it takes him further from being human; he nevertheless accepts radical reconstruction to survive. His gratitude is equally personal, expressed through promises of friendship and handmade mechanical gifts 285 298 333 353 449 816.
Abilities and Skills
Mechanical Engineering
Gray understands both replacement implants and external enhancement equipment, including devices usable by people without prior mechanical modification 294.
- Designs and fine-tunes bio-armor and aug-suits for humans and hoofed beasts 347 480 726.
- Repairs fortress machinery, prosthetic components, and inherited weapons 298 417 448.
- Incorporates knowledge taught by mechanically trained Soul Returners into his work 449.
- Gains some ability to control mechanical components mentally after reconstruction, though he notes that stronger Corridor specialists can perform more advanced manipulation 354.
Hybrid Physiology
His reconstructed body combines plant properties, mechanical structures, and human tissue 353 729.
- Living machinery protects vital organs from impacts, though sufficiently powerful blows can still injure him 410.
- Wooden arms regenerate and tolerate external armor pins with little pain; the wounds close quickly after removal 728.
- His earlier brass body slowed the Demonic Tide’s alienating effects, but surviving flesh remained vulnerable to Blood Corpse infection 281 285 286.
- As a middle-tier combatant, he remains susceptible to hostile effects that high-tiers can ignore 1263.
Close-Quarters Combat
Gray is an experienced fighter who originally relies on heavy mechanical gauntlets before adopting a warhammer 155 449.
- Can smash ordinary Blood Corpses apart or tear their heads from their bodies 283 284.
- Uses retractable fist blades, detachable joints, and a wrist hook during emergencies 285 286.
- His heavy arms are poorly suited to throwing weapons, leaving him disadvantaged against mobile ranged opponents 155.
- Large numbers of enemies and stronger Blood Corpse leaders can overwhelm his defenses 284.
Trade, Navigation, and Negotiation
- Locates himself within the Corridor’s settlement network from settlement numbers and maintains route maps 280.
- Collects political intelligence as part of routine commerce 241.
- Explains the mutual value of Corridor military technology and Second Holy See food production 495.
- Secures Sailan’s respect through a direct, personal confrontation despite knowing the general had obstructed his election journey 1260.
