Qin Yu's ultimate realm, Definition Realm, Meta-Author Ruin ""

Was there such a realm in the world-one outside the cultivation system, outside the rankings of combat power, and even outside the divide between "existence" and "nonexistence"?

Some said there was. Some said it was only a legend. Others said it did not even qualify as a legend, because a legend had at least been told, whereas that realm-it came before "being told."

Qin Yu stood right there.

Stood? Not quite. He did not stand anywhere, because "where" was something he had supplied first. Nor did he come "before" anything, because time was something he had laid down first. If one really had to put it into words, he occupied that position-the vacant position before the story had opened its mouth.

With one hand, he established rules; with the other, he withdrew meaning. As he established them, myriad worlds took shape, laws arrayed themselves, and cause and effect locked into place link by link like iron chains; as he withdrew it, all forms returned to stillness, words fell silent of their own accord, and even the concept of "existence" itself retreated into a state before it had been thought up. The key was-these two things happened simultaneously. Not establishing first and withdrawing afterward, nor withdrawing and then establishing again. The instant something was given out, an opening for taking it back had already been left; the moment everything had been withdrawn, the starting point of rebirth had already been planted.

Just like light and darkness. You thought they were two things? No, they were two sides of one whole. Just like speech and silence. You thought silence meant not speaking? Wrong. Silence was the foundation of speech; without that foundation, you could not even form "words."

So Qin Yu was neither an author nor a character, much less some hidden hand behind the scenes. He was the very prerequisite that allowed a story to begin-prior to its setting, earlier than cause and effect, more primordial than the separation of "being" and "not being."

What could he see? He saw four things at once:

How rules were established-how all things acquired their definitions, how narration built its framework;

How meaning dispersed-how boundaries blurred, how everything returned to silence after the final chapter;

How the plot advanced-how conflicts arose, how characters struggled within the laws;

And what had yet to be written-those branches suspended outside time, those "what ifs" that had almost happened.

The four layers overlapped, like four transparent charts spread out at once, and he saw every layer with perfect clarity. He stood outside all the layers, yet he had written the underlying code of every one. All the heavens and myriad worlds were an open text in his eyes, with nothing he could not read and nothing he could not touch. Fiction, reality, metanarrative, antinarrative-to him, they were all just a sentence within his field of vision.

How did he change the rules?

For a single rule, he drove nails into three places at once: sovereign will said, "It must hold true"; foundational permission said, "It can be overturned"; narrative need said, "It holds true at this moment." Three nails entered the wood simultaneously. You tried pulling one out from outside? Useless. Pulling all three out together? You would have to be on his level. So trying to pry loose a rule he had established from a single layer-dream on.

What about contradictory logic? Simple. Necessity in the upper layer and contingency in the lower layer both held true; affirmation in layer A and negation in layer B each played their own game; narration in the main layer and antinarrative in the branch layer did not interfere with each other. He did not reconcile them or compromise; he simply let them hold true within their respective layers. You said this was impossible? He said the definition of possibility was something he had supplied first.

He could also switch his own state: when establishing rules, he was in the sovereignty state; when withdrawing meaning, he was in the silence state; when entering a story to be a character, he was in the experience state; when doing nothing but watching, he was in the observation state. He switched freely among the four states, his consciousness remaining one continuous, unbroken line from beginning to end.

So in the end, you discovered-Qin Yu was not strong in the sense of being "very powerful." Strength came from comparison; whom could he be compared with? He was a function word in language, referring to nothing, yet without it, you could not even make your words into a sentence; he was a rest in a musical score, making no sound, yet without it, you would have no rhythm; he was the blank space on a canvas, bearing no color, yet without it, you could not even see the colors.

Only with his existence could the story continue to be told. Only with his silence could the story be drawn back in.

The beginning without beginning, the end without end.

Sovereignty and silence dwelled together in this body.

-If there were a "most perfect setting" in the world, it would probably be something like this. But Qin Yu would not admit it, because the word "perfect," too, was something he had defined first.
