Background / History
Arrival in 1984
Before transmigrating, Lin was carrying home a newly purchased NS2 for a gaming session. He finds himself in Los Angeles in 1984, amid the collapse of the North American video game market, and receives unfamiliar memories when his roommate Sam addresses him as Jesse 1.
His original life was steeped in games: he grew up around the millennium, playing systems and genres ranging from the Famicom and Subor to Flash, PC, and mobile games. This attachment—not merely his knowledge of future successes—motivates his decision to remain in game development 15.
Tetris and the First Arcade
Lin rejects Sam's belief that Atari's collapse means video games are finished. Using his beginner system rewards, he builds an early version of Tetris on a Commodore 64 in less than three hours, then persuades Sam to try it through a pizza wager 1 2.
Sam supplies a discarded Pac-Man cabinet, which Lin helps repair before converting it for Tetris. Adding two-player competition requires extensive software and hardware changes, including a difficult port from the C64 to the cabinet's Z80 processor 3 4 6.
The doorstep trial draws queues and earns $125.50 on its first day. Lin arranges copyright-registration paperwork, uses his fault-detection skill to expose damaged equipment during negotiations, and helps secure the old arcade's machines at scrap prices 7 9 10.
Sam offers to finance the arcade's first month's rent if Lin creates another game as good as Tetris. Lin initially selects Salamander as his next project; the game that earns Sam's recognition is an enhanced 1942, featuring wingmen, weapon upgrades, and adaptive pressure. The pair subsequently open the GAMENOVA arcade with three Tetris machines 8 12 13.
Contra and Commercial Expansion
Lin begins selling arcade cabinets through Meyer rather than manufacturing them entirely in-house. When Contra exceeds what his C64 prototype can deliver, he seeks Gerald Lawson's help and refuses to simplify the game merely to fit the existing hardware 15 16 19 21.
Their solution combines a dual-processor prototype with a bank-switched storage board containing eight 32 KB EPROM chips. Lin completes Contra's initial development on June 29, 1984, with testing and optimization still outstanding 22.
At the Conan the Destroyer premiere, Contra impresses Arnold Schwarzenegger enough to secure his interest in an endorsement. As demand spreads, Lin agrees to an exclusive sales arrangement with Meyer at a quoted wholesale price of $4,000 per machine, with 30% paid in advance. Sam also presents registration documents for GAMENOVA Entertainment 22 24 25.
Metal Gear, Development Tools, and NovaBox
Contra's price limits its reach among smaller arcade operators. Lin answers with a lower-cost Metal Gear project built around stealth rather than hardware-intensive combat, and proposes interchangeable arcade boards to separate cabinet and board production 30.
He adapts Metal Gear: Ghost Babel for dual graphics coprocessors and develops a tile-map editor alongside the readable N Language. These tools let Sam build and load a level from documentation. Micro-NOVA recruits Ho Kwok Yuen for its graphics ambitions, and a new ASIC graphics chip helps bring the estimated Metal Gear machine cost down to about $500 33 34 35.
For the NovaBox home console, Lin reaches an agreement with Zilog to jointly develop a dedicated Z80 processor and a complete system-on-chip. His business model permits selling console hardware at cost or a loss while retaining control over cartridge production and charging developers advance royalties based on estimated sales 38.
Street Fighter and the Lee Family
Lin develops a head-to-head fighting game, demonstrating its appeal through dodges, combos, and special moves. Brandon Lee offers to seek his mother Linda's permission to use Bruce Lee's name if the finished game proves worthy 40.
Brandon records martial-arts movements, while Schwarzenegger models Guile. The resulting Street Fighter test build includes Ryu, Zangief, Cammy White, Chun-Li, Fei Long, and Guile 41 43.
Lin's demonstration of Fei Long's deeper moves helps win Brandon's approval. Linda is later moved by the character's resemblance to Bruce Lee during a match; although she calls the game average and demands that the character be strengthened, the system confirms that Lin has earned her approval 44 45.
Recruiting John Carmack
Seeking a pseudo-3D Wolfenstein 3D project and another NovaBox launch title, Lin visits fifteen-year-old John Carmack in a Kansas juvenile detention center. He offers an IBM 5170 and assistance with early release in exchange for a renderer that runs on GAMENOVA's arcade board using N Language and assembly 47 48.
Lin refuses to hire Carmack immediately, citing his schooling, age, and inability to work well with others. He instead tells him to complete the project, return to school, and aim for the University of Kansas 49.
One month later, Carmack arrives with the requested program and a University of Kansas admission letter. Lin lets him stay with him and arranges a demonstration for GAMENOVA's staff 50.
Appearance
- A young Chinese man whom Gerald Lawson initially takes for a student 19.
- Appears only a few years older than fifteen-year-old Carmack—roughly college-graduate age in Carmack's estimation 48.
- Has a distinctive face that helps Vivian recognize him at the university library 10.
Personality
Lin is confident in games even when the surrounding industry has lost faith in them. He treats creating enjoyment as a worthwhile career and draws his commitment from a lifetime of playing games, rather than viewing his future knowledge solely as a route to wealth 1 15.
He combines creative stubbornness with commercial calculation. He refuses to dilute Contra to accommodate inadequate hardware or simply reskin 1942 instead of pursuing Metal Gear, but also designs around machine costs, coin insertion, player retention, and operator profitability 6 12 21 30 42.
His negotiating style is patient and theatrical. He conceals his immediate intentions from Meyer, lets the distributor recognize Tetris's value, and uses the prospect of alternative deals to strengthen his position. During the arcade purchase, he repeatedly stops Sam from revealing how eager they are to buy 7 9 16 17.
Despite his confidence, Lin recognizes the gulf between his startup and companies such as Nintendo, Namco, and Sega. His treatment of Carmack likewise shows that he values teamwork and education alongside raw technical talent 18 49.
