History
Tang Sect Origins
Tang San comes from the Tang Sect and transmigrates into the Douluo world. His familiarity with the sect’s ruthless methods makes Yu Xiaogang’s supposed plan to undermine rival disciples seem plausible to him. Xiao Yao’s understanding of the original story attributes Tang San’s ability to surpass Soul Ring limits to the Asura God taking an interest in him from the moment of his transmigration 2 7.
Overshadowed at Spirit Hall
After obtaining a Mandala Snake Soul Ring, Tang San attracts attention at Nuoding City’s Spirit Hall branch for reaching rank thirteen. That attention quickly shifts to Xiao Yao and Xiao Wu, whose first rings appear older than his and whose Soul Power has reached rank fourteen 4 5.
Tang San resents the branch’s more generous recruitment offer to the pair, especially after his own refusal to join Spirit Hall received a comparatively restrained response. He follows the officials to see who has displaced him, privately resolving to prove himself the true genius 5.
Blaming the disparity on Blue Silver Grass’s poor reputation, he returns to Nuoding Academy and asks Yu Xiaogang for permission to cultivate his hammer Martial Soul. Instead of settling the question, Yu Xiaogang becomes interested in recruiting Xiao Yao and Xiao Wu 6.
Visit to Xiao Yao’s Residence
Tang San accompanies Yu Xiaogang to Xiao Yao’s home, where he tries unsuccessfully to befriend Xiao Wu and supplies Spirit Hall gazettes to support his teacher’s claims to expertise. Both prospective disciples reject Yu Xiaogang 6 7.
Afterward, Tang San confronts his teacher for breaking his promise to focus exclusively on him. Yu Xiaogang claims that he intended to recruit the pair only to squander their talents and remove Tang San’s future rivals. Tang San accepts the explanation with little suspicion 7.
When Yu Xiaogang subsequently suffers from Xiao Yao’s concealed heart flame, Tang San briefly suspects the tea served during their visit. His examination instead leads him to diagnose excessive liver fire and recommend rest, leaving the actual cause undiscovered 9.
New Soul Tournament
Ma Xiunuo recruits Tang San to represent Nuoding City alongside Xiao Yao and Xiao Wu at the New Soul tournament in Mo City. During the journey, Tang San repeatedly tries to impress Xiao Wu, offering food, a hidden weapon, and even himself as a practice target 9.
His eagerness to impress her leads him into a confrontation with Liu Wei. Tang San pierces Liu Wei’s hand with a small bolt but suffers a severe beating; Ma Xiunuo intervenes before Liu Wei can continue the attack 9 10.
Later, Tang San visits his teammates under the pretext of discussing tactics. Xiao Yao recognizes his attempt to win Xiao Wu’s sympathy through an unusually deep hand wound. Xiao Wu pinches the wound, invents a dangerous “microorganism” infection, and persuades him to use Xiao Yao’s supposed medicine—a mixture of cooking seasonings. His repeated applications prolong an injury that should have healed within days to an entire month 10 11.
Xiao Yao and Xiao Wu carry the team through the preliminary rounds. Despite his injured hand, Tang San insists on fighting first against Tanding City in the semifinals, seeking revenge for his humiliation by Liu Wei 11.
His opponent, Qing Rong, burns through Entanglement with the Lie Yan Star Martial Soul. Tang San switches to close combat, but Qing Rong catches him with Flower Net. Unable to escape, Tang San shifts the net slightly and punches Qing Rong unconscious while suffering disabling burns himself. The referee declares a draw 11 12.
His injuries prevent him from participating in the final, leaving Xiao Yao and Xiao Wu to compete without him 12.
Appearance
- Childhood appearance: A boy approximately Xiao Wu’s apparent age, dressed in blue when visiting Xiao Yao’s home 6.
- Bearing: Appears stronger in spirit, vitality, and bearing than Yu Xiaogang during their introduction 6.
- Tournament injuries: Enters the semifinal with his right hand bandaged and suspended from his neck 11.
Personality
Tang San is proud of his talent and sensitive to being overlooked. Spirit Hall’s preference for Xiao Yao and Xiao Wu provokes resentment, while Liu Wei’s humiliation drives him to demand a semifinal appearance despite his injury. He repeatedly affirms that weak Soul Masters, rather than weak Martial Souls, are responsible for failure—even as opponents expose Blue Silver Grass’s limitations 5 11.
His attachment to Yu Xiaogang includes an expectation of exclusive attention. He becomes angry when his teacher seeks other disciples, yet readily accepts the explanation that their recruitment was intended to sabotage potential rivals 7.
Tang San regards his attraction to Xiao Wu as love at first sight. Her presence repeatedly distracts him, and his trust in her allows Xiao Yao and Xiao Wu to deceive him about his wound. Nevertheless, the threat of losing his hand immediately overrides his romantic thoughts, showing that he places his strength above courtship 9 10.
In combat, he is resourceful and decisive. Ma Xiunuo judges him superior to Qing Rong in strength, speed, technique, and cunning; when trapped, Tang San chooses to force a simultaneous defeat rather than retreat 12.
Abilities & Skills
Twin Martial Souls
Tang San possesses Blue Silver Grass and the Clear Sky Hammer 6.
- Blue Silver Grass: His actively cultivated Martial Soul, used for battlefield control and creating openings for close combat 11.
- Clear Sky Hammer: His second Martial Soul. He asks to cultivate it after feeling undervalued, but no subsequent development is documented 6.
- Limitations: Blue Silver Grass is torn apart by Liu Wei’s spear and readily burned away by Qing Rong’s flames 10 11.
First Soul Skill: Entanglement
His Mandala Snake ring grants a technique that rapidly grows Blue Silver Grass around an opponent 4 11.
- Attempts to bind Qing Rong by growing grass up his legs 11.
- Uses additional strands to divert Qing Rong’s attacks while closing the distance 11.
- Fails to restrain Qing Rong when the grass is burned away 11.
Mysterious Heaven Skill
An internal cultivation method whose accumulated power Tang San considers a major advantage over other children’s Hundred-Year Soul Rings 6.
- Channels its internal power into Mysterious Jade Hand during close combat 11.
Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track
An evasive footwork technique used to dodge Qing Rong’s initial fire cloud and approach him under cover of Blue Silver Grass 11.
- Cannot extract Tang San from Flower Net once he has advanced too close to evade it 12.
Mysterious Jade Hand
A hand technique that produces a faint jade glow as Tang San prepares for close combat 11.
- Combined with Mysterious Heaven Skill to strengthen his attempted strike against Qing Rong 11.
Controlling Crane Capturing Dragon
A technique Tang San employs one-handed to shift Qing Rong’s incoming Flower Net 12.
- Creates enough room for a counterpunch, but does not prevent the net from burning and incapacitating him 12.
Purple Demon Eye
A visual technique used to inspect the supposed splinter Xiao Wu claims to remove from his wound 10.
- Reveals no splinter, though Tang San ultimately accepts Xiao Wu’s explanation despite finding nothing 10.
Hidden Weapons and Poison Knowledge
Tang San possesses concealed-projectile techniques and enough poison knowledge that Yu Xiaogang expects him to recognize poisoning 8 10.
- Injures Liu Wei’s hand with a short, nail-like bolt despite the difference in their Soul Power 10.
- Repeatedly confirms that Xiao Yao’s false medicine contains no toxins, but fails to recognize that it is aggravating his wound 11.
- Misidentifies Yu Xiaogang’s heart-flame affliction as excessive liver fire 9.
Equipment
- Twenty-Four Moonlit Bridges — Storage item from which Tang San retrieves stacks of Spirit Hall gazettes during Yu Xiaogang’s recruitment attempt 6.
- Concealed bolt weapon — Launches the short projectile that pierces Liu Wei’s left hand; the wound is shallow rather than disabling 10.
Relationships
- Tang Hao — Father and powerful protector. Xiao Yao considers Clear Sky Douluo’s presence a major reason to avoid recklessly attacking Tang San 4 48.
- Yu Xiaogang — Teacher whom Tang San initially respects and expects to devote himself exclusively to his development. Tang San also examines him after the heart-flame attack 6 7 9.
- Xiao Wu — Unreciprocated romantic interest and temporary teammate. She rejects his advances and collaborates with Xiao Yao in tormenting him 9 10.
- Xiao Yao — Temporary teammate and concealed adversary. He manipulates Tang San into challenging Liu Wei and prepares the false wound medicine 9 10.
- Ma Xiunuo — Tournament recruiter and supervisor. Protects Tang San from Liu Wei, arranges his recovery, and permits him to fight in the semifinals 9 10 11.
- Liu Wei — Tanding City representative who defeats and humiliates him, becoming the focus of his desire for revenge 10 11.
- Qing Rong — Semifinal opponent. Their bout ends in a draw after both lose the ability to continue 11 12.
