Family Background and Broken Betrothal

Meng Fuyu belongs to the wealthy Meng Family in the capital. His status as its sole future heir, combined with his reputation for being gentle and gentlemanly, made him a desirable partner among the capital’s socialites. He publicly announced his relationship with actress Lin Qian the year before his first documented appearance 113.

Before dating Lin Qian, he had been betrothed to Chu Yu through a verbal promise between her grandfather and a Meng Family elder, who were chess companions. Meng Fuyu initially hoped to strengthen Wen Zhixin’s entertainment career so that her status would satisfy his family’s expectations. During the shop-opening segment, Meng Fuyu wrongly suspected that Gu Jinhuai was interested in Wen Zhixin. When news of his former engagement appeared online, Meng Fuyu confronted Chu Yu, fearing that the circumstances of her rejection would damage his standing with Wen Zhixin. At Gu Jinhuai’s banquet, the Gu and Chu Groups announced that evidence had been submitted to the police. Fang Lanzhi then revealed that Chu Yu herself was Gu Jinhuai’s supposed ex-girlfriend, dismantling the allegations. A mysterious man who had earlier given him a photograph of Wen Zhixin in a taxi delivered further material to his phone. Meng Fuyu had previously accepted Wen Zhixin’s reassurance about their first meeting, but the new disclosure exposed her deception. His feelings for Wen Zhixin make him protective, jealous, and vulnerable to manipulation. He risks public criticism to visit her, interprets Gu Jinhuai’s gestures as romantic competition, and initially believes her account of their first meeting despite receiving a warning.
