Background / History

Before the Third Shinobi World War, Uchiha Fugaku arranged for Yuan to become Orochimaru’s student. The arrangement was both compensation for Fugaku’s nephew and a political investment intended to bring the Uchiha closer to Konoha’s leadership. Yuan initially received more instruction in research than in combat ninjutsu 2 3 35.

Orochimaru’s laboratory subjected captives to repeated vivisections. During the war, his human experimentation extended to ninja from his own village. Working there allowed Yuan to discover his unusual genetic fusion ability, but fear of becoming an experimental subject led him to conceal the discovery and destroy his records 3.

His manipulation is often personal and calculated. Fire Temple Experiment

Following the Nine-Tails attack, Orochimaru gathers his squad near the Fire Temple and takes them to observe a jinchūriki sealing. The monks’ remaining Nine-Tails chakra has become dangerously unstable, but he allows much of the ensuing violence to continue 7 8.

He seals chakra into the prepared host, Kudo. When Kudo cannot withstand it, Orochimaru kills him, extracts the chakra, and leaves Kazuma with the sealing technique, its solution, and the remaining chakra. The experiment supplies information for Orochimaru’s larger interest in capturing tailed beasts 9 24.

Three-Tails Mission

Orochimaru prepares his squad to capture Isobu in Sea Country, teaching Yuan the Spiritualisation Technique and promising a forbidden jutsu as a reward. He hopes that controlling the Three-Tails will weaken Kirigakure and strengthen his own Hokage candidacy 10 12 24.

Danzo instead orders him to assist Kirigakure ANBU in purging bloodline clans opposed to the Third Mizukage. Orochimaru recognizes the political maneuver but places his remaining hopes on Yuan’s ability to control Isobu.
