Duties and Capabilities
Imperial Protection
- Guards the empress’s bedchamber and the entrance to the Heaven-Praying Hall during morning court 5.
- Deploys palace experts in response to an assassination attempt; members surround Bu Liuhen once they locate him 2.
- Restricts reassignment of an imperially appointed bodyguard: Shangguan Weiming tells Princess Huai’an that transferring Gu Yuan to her residence requires the empress’s decree 7.
Intelligence and Surveillance
- Monitors palace affairs closely enough to report Huai’an’s private meal with Gu Yuan and the empress dowager’s ancestral home 14.
- Maintains records of martial-world sects and known first-rank experts 18 26.
- Conducts covert missions under direct imperial instructions. Jin Yan’s Qingzhou assignment requires her to conceal her whereabouts, abandon her known identity, and report only to Qi Yueli 18.
- Enforces information suppression, including secrecy surrounding Zhang Qiandao’s detention and Huai’an’s interactions with Gu Yuan 3 14.
Investigation and Detention
- Arrests suspects, prepares case files, examines crime scenes, questions witnesses, and secures residences under investigation 2 26 47.
- Can detain its own members: Gu Yuan is imprisoned after killing Prince Duan’s heir and two officials’ sons 20.
- Operates Cloud-Soaring Pavilion as a guarded prison. Qi Yueli warns that a raid there would trigger a citywide lockdown 15 17.
- Receives assignments involving missing provincial heirs, stolen tribute, and politically sensitive murders 25 46.
Combat Strength and Limitations
- The ten original commanders kill the four imperial prison intruders within ten breaths 3.
- Hundreds of guards participate in the encirclement of Nine Geese Village’s altar 39.
- Under Gu Yuan’s orders, guards coat their blades in Scorching Yang Flame to attack the evil presence 40.
- Ordinary members remain vulnerable to supernatural illusions, ambushes, and unfamiliar sorcery. Guards trapped by the evil barrier require its destruction to awaken, while Lu Ling rescues others from assassins in the underground maze 41 42.
- The Guard cannot initially identify the Heavenly Calamity Sect’s token or determine how sorcery killed the Jiaozhou heir 26 47 50.
Rules and Equipment
Palace Conduct
Zhao Sheng gives Gu Yuan a copy of the Imperial Palace Rules on his first day 5.
- Do not speak out of turn, look where forbidden, or pry into restricted matters.
- Do not form cliques or neglect duties.
- Keep secrets strictly confidential.
- Protect the empress above all else.
- Rule-breaking can lead to dismissal and investigation; Zhao Sheng states that minor violations do not ordinarily warrant execution 5.
Documented Equipment
- Waist token — An identification token Gu Yuan prepares to use if questioned while returning through the capital at night 12.
- Armor and blades — Gu Yuan wears silver armor on duty; guards wield blades during the Nine Geese Village battle 5 40.
- Mission-specific artifacts — Gu Yuan carries the empress-granted Orthodox Yang Sword and uses the Cloud-Peering Mirror during the Heavenly Calamity Sect investigation. Neither is established as standard Guard equipment 36 37 39.
History
Gu Yuan’s Arrest and the Imperial Prison Raid
The Guard arrests Gu Yuan after he drunkenly enters the imperial mausoleum and insults the late emperor. His apparent childhood mental affliction makes the incident suspicious enough to warrant further investigation 1 2.
When Bu Liuhen attacks Qi Yueli, the Guard prepares to pursue him, but she instead orders it to the imperial prison. There, its commanders kill the intruders attempting to rescue Zhang Qiandao. Qi Yueli orders Zhang secretly detained while publicly announcing his disappearance and offering a reward for information 2 3.
Gu Yuan is returned home and appointed an armed imperial bodyguard, bringing the former prisoner into the organization that arrested him 3 4.
Zhang Qiandao’s Escape and Jin Yan’s Assignment
Disguised as Lin Yao, Qi Yueli raids Cloud-Soaring Pavilion herself, knocks out Jin Yan and the other guards, and releases Zhang Qiandao. Unaware of the rescuer’s identity, Jin Yan reports the involvement of an unidentified first-rank expert 17 18.
Qi Yueli ends the investigation into that expert, dismisses Jin Yan from her commander’s post, and privately sends her to investigate Qingzhou 18.
Prince Duan Affair
The Guard imprisons Gu Yuan after his killings at the Bureau of Music. Following the exposure of Prince Duan and two officials’ crimes, Shangguan Weiming delivers the decree clearing and promoting him, along with an assignment to confiscate their property 20 22.
Court officials assume that only the Mystic Shadow Guard could have secretly assembled such extensive evidence. Their belief strengthens their fear that the empress has orchestrated the entire affair 22.
Stolen Tribute and the Heavenly Calamity Sect
Dong Wuj iu’s force finds the missing Mozhou heir alive and recovers a token marked with “calamity” and a ghost’s face. Despite its records, the Guard cannot identify the organization behind it 25 26.
After Gu Yuan’s promotion to commander, Qi Yueli sends him after the stolen tribute with Shangguan Weiming and Dong Wuj iu. The investigation leads to Nine Geese Village, where the Guard ambushes a supposed mountain god receiving child sacrifices 35 36 39.
The operation exposes guards to mind-trapping illusions and a maze defended by Heavenly Calamity Sect assassins. After the fighting, Gu Yuan gathers the survivors, opens the sect’s hidden vault, and orders the guards to inventory the recovered tribute and treasure—while openly declaring that he will take several piles of artifact-making materials 41 42 44.
Jiaozhou Heir Murder
The Guard secures the Jiaozhou heir’s residence and detains Gu Shu for questioning because she visited him before his unexplained death. Qi Yueli assigns Gu Yuan to investigate alongside Commander Duan 46 47.
Gu Yuan’s Witch God Sacrificial Art reveals evidence of a struggle and identifies witchcraft as the killing method. He later explains that the murder plot is designed to exploit the Guard’s inability to trace sorcery: repeated deaths despite imperial protection would undermine public confidence in Qi Yueli 47 50.
Loyalty and Predicted Fate
- Trusted confidants: Zhao Sheng describes the Guard as the empress’s trusted inner circle. Its members react with reverence when they believe she has independently anticipated the prison-break plot 3 5.
- Imperial patronage: Gu Yuan attributes its loyalty partly to Qi Yueli’s treatment of subordinates, citing his own early access to cultivation techniques 8.
- Predicted destruction: Gu Yuan’s diary states that, in the original storyline, a demonically corrupted Qi Yueli sacrifices the entire Guard to advance her cultivation, leaving no survivors. Qi Yueli is visibly shaken by the prediction; the sacrifice has not occurred in the documented events 8.
