He quickly passed through the outer ring and saw a towering wooden fence, the dividing wall between the inner and outer rings, constructed from rows of sturdy tree stumps.
The entrance to the inner ring was guarded by two burly men.
"A new recruit for the Night Watch Team, I'll take him to the Talisman Master," Shi Meng said.
Hearing this, the two guards didn't stop them and let them pass.
Entering the inner ring, he saw a completely different architectural style from the outer ring.
The outer ring consisted of mud-and-thatch houses, while the inner ring had brick houses with tiled roofs. The streets were clean and tidy, and the people's clothing was more refined and vibrant.
In the very center of the inner ring of the village, an oval-shaped giant stone floated, emitting a faint, soft glow, solemn and mysterious.
The inner ring of the village was clearly much livelier. The people living here had good complexions, clearly well-fed and clothed. The men were strong and imposing, and the women had fair, delicate skin and fine figures.
Seeing Wei Fan, a new face, many young women cast expectant glances his way.
Wei Fan, however, was unaffected. Although the living environment in the inner ring was better, it was still just that. Compared to his life in the modern city, it wasn't particularly good at all.
However, the women in this world were mostly fair-skinned, beautiful, and graceful, making one's imagination run wild.
After walking a hundred paces or so, Wei Fan saw a grand mansion, enclosed by high walls and dark tiles. Two majestic stone lions stood before the main gate, and a plaque in the center bore the characters 'Zhu Mansion' written in a flamboyant calligraphy.
What grandeur!
Wei Fan's gaze deepened as he looked at the local emperor of Wushan Village, the Zhu family.
From within the Zhu Mansion, sounds of music and women's laughter occasionally drifted out, a stark contrast to the outside.
"Let's hurry, the Talisman Master's hut is just ahead," Shi Meng said.
The two arrived in front of a circular stone tower building. The sun was high in the sky, but as they approached the building, they felt a sense of coolness.
"So eerie!" Wei Fan shivered, a feeling of unease rising in his heart.
Shi Meng stepped forward and knocked on the heavy wooden door banded with iron.
Creak.
The wooden door opened, revealing an incredibly dark interior. A figure in a black robe appeared in the shadows, their face obscured. Their movements were stiff, unlike those of a living person.
"What is it?" a hoarse voice asked impatiently.
"Please inform the Talisman Master, a new recruit has joined the Night Watch Team and is here to collect the monthly quota of Little Flame Talismans!"
"Wait here!" the black-robed figure replied coldly before closing the door again.
A moment later, the door opened again. The black-robed figure extended a dark wooden box. "Take it!"
"Thank you, Talisman Master!" Shi Meng took the wooden box and said to Wei Fan, "We've got the Little Flame Talismans, let's head back first!"
"Why does the sense of danger intensify the closer we get to this hut?" Wei Fan asked.
"Your feeling is correct. The area where the Talisman Master resides affects living beings, causing intense unease. Over time, it can even cause irreparable damage to flesh and blood!" Shi Meng said seriously.
"Irreparable damage to flesh and blood?" Wei Fan gasped. No wonder he had felt such a strong sense of crisis earlier.
That figure shrouded in black robes, having stayed in the Talisman Master's hut for so long, perhaps their body had already rotted?
Thinking of this, Wei Fan's scalp tingled.
This world might be more dangerous than he had imagined!
"Here are your Little Flame Talismans. Team members can only hold one at a time. The rest are kept by the Night Watch Team. You can only exchange for a new one after you've used this one up."
Shi Meng opened the box and took out a talisman.
Wei Fan took it. The small yellow talisman felt warm in his hand, inscribed with complex patterns that were profound and difficult to understand, yet they seemed to hold immense power.
"The Little Flame Talisman has the power to counter Oddities. When facing an Oddity, slap the talisman onto your blade, and the blade will turn red-hot.
It's like adding a fire attribute, capable of inflicting massive damage on Oddities," Shi Meng explained. "Of course, this is only effective if you can actually hit the Oddity's body. Otherwise, even with the Little Flame Talisman, your life won't be guaranteed.
Also, higher-level Oddities have stronger resistance to the Little Flame Talisman. After you've cultivated the Three Yuan Battle Art, you should be able to deal with ordinary White Gloom-level Oddities.
If you encounter a Black Gloom, or an Oddity of Black Gloom level or higher, it's best to prioritize your own survival and stall for time while waiting for reinforcements."
