Background
Kang Shilin was born into both the imperial family and the Duke of Anguo's household. His mother was the late emperor's paternal aunt, making Kang Shilin the late emperor's cousin. His father was the late Duke of Anguo, whose title later passed to Kang Shilin's nephew 180.
He and the late emperor were childhood companions. During one hunting outing, they fought over a rabbit they had shot simultaneously, and Kang Shilin beat the young prince black and blue. Their friendship survived the quarrel; they also studied together and were punished together after secretly visiting a brothel 181.
As adults, Kang Shilin disliked the emperor's vulgar tastes but remained his trusted confidant. His discretion, lack of competing political interests, and refusal to join court disputes allowed the emperor to speak freely with him. He received numerous imperial gifts but refused an offered noble title 184 562.
His standing remained exceptional under Xiao Ge despite his lack of office or rank. He belonged to no princely faction, supported the emperor, and understood that his influence rested on the favor and respect of two successive sovereigns 375 395.
Appearance
Kang Shilin's art name, Layperson Kumu, suits his withered-tree appearance at his introduction 103.
- Tall, thin, and gaunt, with a deeply wrinkled face 103.
- Wears a goatee 103.
- Remains energetic and quick-footed despite his age 181.
- Develops age-related eyesight problems and recurring wrist pain from brushwork; both improve after taking a Recovery Pill 795.
Personality
Kang Shilin is proud, impatient, sharp-tongued, and notoriously aggressive. His displeasure can make his teaching harsh enough to nearly reduce students to tears. Nevertheless, his outbursts are selective: he understands worldly affairs, distinguishes between people worth forgiving and those deserving retaliation, and behaves courteously toward women of upright character 179 181.
Painting takes precedence over convention for him. He dismisses gossip about propriety and willingly learns from a much younger artist when her technique interests him. His apparent disregard for worldly matters masks considerable perception: he recognizes political dangers and can identify hidden motives from details as small as the choice of a letter courier 181 183 206 699.
He is especially indulgent toward Zhao Ruxi. Praise of her delights him far more than praise of himself, and he admires her diligence as much as her talent. His protectiveness does not erase practical caution: he accepts advice when her reputation or safety is at stake and keeps attendants present during confidential conversations to prevent gossip 330 334 600 627.
Abilities & Skills
Landscape Painting
Kang Shilin is regarded as Great Jin's foremost painter, giving court-sponsored painting competitions much of their credibility 183 445.
- Signature subjects: Solitary peaks rising into clouds, with mist winding through mountains 332.
- Original style: Aloof, lofty, cold, and ethereal, reflecting his own temperament 332.
- Technical strength: His distinction initially lies less in inventing techniques than in exceptional vividness, expression, and individual style 331.
- Artistic judgment: Recognizes Zhao Ruxi's emerging new school before she has even finished the painting 331.
Artistic Development
| Development | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Studies Zhao Ruxi's charcoal drawing method | 206 | Practices using light and shadow to give simple objects three-dimensional form. His established brush habits make the unfamiliar medium difficult at first. |
| Achieves a new landscape style | 414 | Watching Zhao Ruxi practice inspires him to give his landscapes greater substance and a weathered sense of reality while retaining their ethereal quality. |
| Makes another advance after physical recovery | 794 795 | A Recovery Pill improves his eyesight and relieves wrist pain. His subsequent painting session produces a further advance in his skills. |
Teaching and Talent Recognition
- Teaches painting at Beining Women's Academy and maintains four formal disciples: Wu Huaisi, Gong Cheng, Wu Zong, and Zhao Ruxi 103 185 394.
- Gives Zhao Ruxi the sobriquet Zhao Zhiwei and teaches her brush-and-ink techniques that she later incorporates into her own development 206 331.
- Values an unrestrained spirit, diligence, and originality rather than mere conformity to elite upbringing 186 600.
- Acknowledges when his disciple's achievement exceeds his own, admitting that he feels unworthy of being her master 401.
Political Perception and Influence
- Uses direct access to Xiao Ge to defend Zhao Ruxi's interests, while holding no official position himself 238 420.
- Mobilizes the painting academy's members into a collective support network for her 322.
- Understands the limits of his protection, accepting that publicly revealing her mathematical talent could expose her to dangers he cannot prevent 415.
- Correctly deduces that Lady Zhu arranged the delivery of Zhao Ruxi's marriage letter because its courier differs from her usual trusted messengers 699.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Taking Zhao Ruxi as a Disciple
Kang Shilin first encounters Xu Xi, later known as Zhao Ruxi, while teaching painting at Beining County Women's Academy. Her drawing fascinates him so much that he asks to study an unfinished portrait immediately 103 104.
He subsequently gathers students and finds premises for her proposed private class, accepting her terms of three thousand taels per person without establishing formal master-disciple relationships. When concerns arise over criticism of the arrangement, Madam Cui proposes that he formally accept Zhao Ruxi as his disciple. He agrees and gives her his cherished imperial jade pendant 181 183 184.
Their instruction becomes reciprocal: he teaches her traditional painting, while she teaches him and other established painters charcoal drawing, light, and shadow 206.
Protecting Her Income and Reputation
- Fu family dispute: Challenges the seizure of an estate Zhao Ruxi wanted to buy. Xiao Ge persuades him to accept its return, but Kang Shilin remains cold toward Fu Yunkai's subsequent apology 237 238.
- Government drawing lessons: Insists on clearly authorized payment of 1,500 taels per official, arguing that her labor deserves compensation just as officials receive salaries 238.
- Private property: Helps secure shops and an estate in her name and urges her to safeguard her savings 270.
- Earl of Zhongqin dispute: Recognizes her proposed apology as a calculated counterattack. He sends Kang An to plead ostentatiously on her behalf and rallies the painters to support her, making the earl's household appear responsible for bullying them 322 323.
- Forced academy transfer: Appeals directly to Xiao Ge when Princess Pingyang and Consort Jin try to force Zhao Ruxi into the Capital Women's Academy, obtaining a promise of protection 419 420.
Promoting Her Art
Kang Shilin waits for a sufficiently prominent opportunity to introduce Zhao Ruxi's new painting style. Xiao Lingyan's auction provides the audience he wants. He contributes a painting but rejects a scheme to secretly buy it back, considering the risk to their reputations unacceptable. Instead, he chooses a work favored by Xiao Ge and arranges for a palace attendant to purchase it 382 383.
Painting Competition Controversy
As a judge, Kang Shilin awards Zhao Ruxi a perfect ten, abandoning their prior agreement that he would score her only slightly above the runner-up. The result invites accusations of favoritism 441.
Rather than engage Mei Zhongjun in the expected angry confrontation, he resigns as judge and announces Zhao Ruxi's withdrawal. Their coordinated departure shifts public sympathy toward them and leaves the competition's organizers facing the consequences 443 444 445.
Supporting Her Official Career
- Accompanies Zhao Ruxi to seek essay guidance from Peng Guoan and reports the arrangement to Xiao Ge 499 500.
- Resigns from Beining Women's Academy before her provincial examination because winter travel has become unsafe and tiring. His disciples arrange gatherings at his home every ten days 542.
- Conveys her refusal of a County Princess title and her request that Zhao Yuanxun receive a suitable local appointment if the emperor judges him capable 562.
- Agrees to relay her preference for an outside posting, even though it means relinquishing the expected advantages of a first-class jinshi placement and Hanlin Academy entry 599.
- Later agrees to help with her plan to return to office once her farming tools and irrigation projects demonstrate their value 757.
Nanyang Visit and Marriage Discussions
Kang Shilin makes an unannounced visit to Zhao Ruxi with Gan Lun, Zhou Wenbai, and Xiao Ruotong. During the visit, his group finds a spring-fed well outside Danyang's north gate; Zhao Ruxi identifies its water as the Jade Milk Spring she needs for her wine project 666 674.
When Xiao Lingyan proposes marriage, Zhao Ruxi asks her master's advice. Kang Shilin initially opposes Lady Zhu's support for the match but listens to her reasoning through Liu Quan. He recognizes Xiao Lingyan's merits and tells Liu Quan that, if the emperor is sincere, he will accommodate Lady Zhu's wishes 699 700.
Recovery Pill
Zhao Ruxi secretly gives Kang Shilin a system-produced Recovery Pill, claiming it came from a physician. He takes it without questioning her intentions. His vision becomes clearer, colors appear brighter, his wrist pain disappears, and his body feels somewhat lighter and stronger 794 795.
Moved that she would give him such precious medicine, he immediately returns to painting and makes another artistic advance 795.
