Background / History

Cangwu Lin Family

Lin Zhiyan belongs to the Cangwu Lin Family, a distinguished South Sea family that once had two Martial Marquises. Its Martial Marquis and numerous descendants died fighting without retreat during the Great Cataclysm. Although the family no longer has a living Martial Marquis, its sacrifices give Zhiyan exceptional standing; her deputy believes her death would shake the Hall of Martial Virtue 23 35.

Her father, Federation Lieutenant General Lin Youmin, died in the line of duty ten years before the events in Fang City. Her grandfather once held a permanent seat in the Hall of Martial Virtue 43 46.

Imperial Capital Academy

Zhiyan enrolled at Imperial Capital Academy two years after Lu Zhao. She witnessed his demonstration of fine mental-force control, in which more than a hundred suspended steel balls followed intricate, millimeter-precise trajectories. She regarded him as a goal to surpass but never successfully challenged his first-place standing 10.

She chose Laozi’s teachings for her course on the mind. Looking back, she recalls initially mistaking the young Lu Zhao, who was substituting as an instructor, for a teacher 46.

Appearance

Lin Zhiyan has short, ear-length hair, defined features, and a shapely figure. Her short hairstyle gives her an especially sharp appearance, complemented by her black duty uniform 8 13.

  • Clear eyes and thin lips: Her eyes visibly brighten when she uses mental charm 13 18.
  • Proud bearing: She habitually lifts her chin slightly, including when greeting Lu Zhao 13 41.
  • Meticulous cleanliness: After searching a corpse’s memories, she scrubs her hands until the skin reddens and breaks. Lu Zhao later suspects she has an obsession with cleanliness 9 13.

Personality

Zhiyan is proud, decisive, and accustomed to others seeking her favor. Lu Zhao’s refusal to flatter her frustrates her, and she repeatedly tries to make him approach her for help rather than recruit him openly. Her interest combines genuine respect for his ability with a desire to see her former academy idol lower his proud head 13 18 47.

Her pride does not prevent her from acknowledging merit. After Lu Zhao rescues the ambushed force, she publicly credits him with stabilizing the situation, promises to recommend him for a commendation, and offers him a position. She later uses her connections to secure his temporary appointment to the task force 24 38 40.

She has a strong sense of responsibility toward personnel under her command. During the ambush, she insists on reaching the front line to cover their withdrawal and rejects the idea that her own life should matter more than theirs 22 23.

Zhiyan controls her outward emotions carefully; Lu Zhao observes that the emotions she displays are usually those she wants others to see. Beneath her aristocratic manner, she remains pragmatic and prefers intelligent colleagues who understand the political stakes without lengthy explanations 19 48 49.

Abilities & Skills

Mental Shock and Control

Zhiyan can directly attack the mind, disrupting enemies or rendering them unconscious 22 23 45.

  • Wide-area shock: Can instantly knock ordinary people unconscious within fifty meters 45.
  • Concentrated shock: Against the approaching Lao Gao, she estimates that a close-range strike could leave him completely senseless. Its effective range is normally five meters, extended to ten by twisting her mental power into a “rod” 23.
  • Battlefield disruption: Her mental attack disorients Lao Gao during the ambush, prompting him to order Shan Yong to locate her 22.
  • Crowd intervention: Uses spiritual power to stop the confrontation between the Special Response soldiers and Lu Zhao’s group 24.
  • Limitations: Her wide-area attack cannot distinguish allies from enemies. Lu Zhao accompanies her on the Foreign District operation because he is the only participating colleague able to withstand it 45.
  • Vulnerability: Having her mental control broken leaves her visibly pale. Her mental specialization has also provided relatively little bodily enhancement 23.

Memory Searching

Zhiyan can probe a dead person’s mental world for memories 9.

  • Searches the slain Greenwood bandit’s brain and sees him obtain a heavy, deep-blue jade carrying the smell of an ancient tomb 9.
  • Can recover fragments from a shattered mental world, but cannot reliably reconstruct missing sequences 9.
  • Fails to determine the stolen Fate Bone’s hiding place, forcing the investigation to trace the fugitive’s contacts and route instead 9.

Mental Charm

Zhiyan can exert a bewitching influence during conversation 13.

  • Leaves Liu Qiang staring at her in a daze while she questions Lu Zhao 13.
  • Fails to affect Lu Zhao, whose own mental-type ability gives him resistance 13.

Mental Perception and Tracking

Zhiyan can extend her spiritual power outward and use enhanced perception to assess people 18 47.

  • Detects that someone is observing her mentally when she first arrives at Ant Ridge, though she does not immediately locate Lu Zhao 8.
  • Searches for Lu Zhao’s presence near the task force office 18.
  • Recognizes the mental power guiding Lu Zhao’s sniper bullet during the rescue 23.
  • Discerns Xu Fang’s mixture of awe, rigidity, and contempt 47.
  • Describes her Divine Ability as particularly suited to finding people 41.

Command and Political Judgment

Zhiyan directs joint operations and understands how local authorities can obstruct an investigation without openly violating rules 20 22 38.

  • Maintains orderly command during the ambush while other task force members become disorganized 22.
  • Recognizes that Fang City’s resistance concerns political leverage, not merely the arrest of criminals 48.
  • Uses Lu Zhao’s genuine service record to challenge Liu Zhihui’s rapid advancement and indirectly criticize Zhao De 47.
  • Seeks a future in the Circuit Administration Bureau, potentially even as a Martial Marquis, making her reputation and use of authority important to her ambitions 48.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Fate Bone Investigation

  • Arrives at Ant Ridge Border Station with a thirteen-person task force in five bulletproof SUVs 8.
  • Searches the dead bandit’s memories, then recognizes Lu Zhao’s name while reviewing the case 9.
  • Investigates why an outstanding Imperial Capital graduate remains a border platoon leader. She also reprimands Lü Jinshan for failing to search for the stolen item and gives him three days to recover it 10.
  • Questions Lu Zhao personally, attempting both familiarity and mental charm. He refers her to his report and provides no additional information 13.

Thunderbolt 021 and the Ning County Ambush

  • Wants Lu Zhao’s assistance but insists he approach her first. He refuses, and she waits until midnight before leaving angrily 18 19.
  • Approves Zhang Like’s later request for Lu Zhao’s temporary deployment, but Ant Ridge Border Station rejects it 20.
  • Moves to the front line to cover a withdrawal when the operation becomes an ambush. Shan Yong locates her, and her transformed assistant forces him back underground 22.
  • Attempts to prepare a decisive mental strike as Lao Gao approaches, while her deputy insists on evacuating her. Lu Zhao arrives by helicopter and kills Lao Gao before he reaches her 23.
  • Credits Lu Zhao for the rescue and offers him task force work. He declines a full-time post but accepts a temporary advisory arrangement 24.

Fang City Obstruction and Lu Zhao’s Appointment

After the failed operation, the task force relocates its office to Fang City. Marquis Chen’s network obstructs it through surveillance, delayed coordination, absent department heads, threatening letters, and stone-throwing thugs 38.

Zhiyan asks Liang Chengyun to transfer Lu Zhao, but he hesitates because of the Chen Family’s influence. She then appeals directly to Marquis Liu Hanwen, who agrees to help. Lu Zhao subsequently receives a temporary staff-officer appointment signed by Liang Chengyun 38 40.

Fugitive Interception and the Foreign District

  • Leads the search for tomb robbers who stole Fate Bones from the Tomb of the Prince of Jingjiang 41.
  • Visits the frontline outpost with Lu Zhao and tests his stance toward proposals associated with the surrender faction. Lu Zhao interprets this as part of a possible Lin Family challenge to Chen Family influence 42 43.
  • Leads the operation targeting an injured fire-type fugitive on Kabuki Street, taking Lu Zhao with her because his abilities complement her indiscriminate mental shock 45.
  • Uses their conspicuous tour of criminal venues as a display of power rather than a genuinely covert search 46.
  • Challenges Zhao De over easing restrictions between the Chinese District and Federation subjects, then pressures him to cooperate with the investigation and recover the stolen goods 47 48.

Relationships

  • Lu Zhao — Academy senior, former benchmark, and task force colleague. Their relationship mixes professional respect, mutual assistance, political bargaining, and her persistent wish to make him ask for her patronage. He ultimately decides to cooperate only when she follows proper procedures 10 24 38 47 50.
  • Lin Youmin — Her late father. Lu Zhao’s refusal to accept wrongdoing as normal reminds her of him, a comparison that unsettles her but leads her to accommodate Lu Zhao’s objections 46.
  • Liang Chengyun — Public Security General Directorate commander and her father’s former aide. She addresses him as “Uncle Liang” and seeks his help with Lu Zhao’s transfer 38.
  • Liu Hanwen — Martial Marquis and chief of the South Sea Circuit Administrative Council. Agrees to arrange Lu Zhao’s transfer after Liang hesitates 38.
  • Zhang Like — Border defense officer who advocates bringing Lu Zhao into the operation. Zhiyan recognizes his loyalty but initially makes him relay her demand that Lu Zhao approach her himself 18.
  • Lü Jinshan — Border station chief whom she censures for neglecting the Fate Bone search. She later suspects he deliberately allowed a fugitive through the border 10 47.
  • Xu Fang — Adjutant whom she questions about the investigation and instructs on the political reasons behind Fang City’s obstruction 47 48.
  • Zhao De — Fang City executive. She maintains basic respect for his official rank while challenging his policies and demanding cooperation 47 48.
  • Marquis Chen and the Chen Family — The dominant local political network obstructing her task force. Their influence limits what even her connections can accomplish in Fang City 38 47.
