Background / History

Raiden Mei attended Senba Academy as the feared “Thunder Queen.” Although many classmates approached her because of her family background, none were genuine friends. Kiana became the first person to approach her without being discouraged by her distant reputation. 149 150

After Raiden Ryoma was imprisoned on accusations of corruption and bribery, Mei was ostracized by classmates and teachers alike. Her belongings were vandalized, and former friends abandoned her. Believing that Kiana had also rejected her after learning the accusations against her father, Mei attempted to jump from the academy rooftop. 151 154

Kiana rescued Mei, defended her from the bullies, and reassured her that she believed Ryoma had been framed. The experience became the foundation of Mei's profound attachment to Kiana. Mei soon began cooking for her, despite her first bento being poorly made, and accompanied Kiana to confront the students who had threatened them. 155

During the Third Honkai outbreak at Senba Academy, Mei witnessed Kiana take a devastating blow intended for her. Believing Kiana dead, Mei awakened as a Herrscher and destroyed the surrounding Honkai Beasts and Anti-Entropy forces. 160

Personality

Mei is fundamentally kind, gentle, and emotionally perceptive. Even after becoming a Herrscher, Kiana recognizes that Mei's desire for vengeance conflicts with her original nature. Mei herself admits that she had once been timid and easily hurt, but refuses to remain helpless after awakening. 154 161

Her deepest motivation is protecting Kiana. This devotion can become frighteningly absolute: after her awakening, Mei declares that she will kill anyone who harms Kiana, whether they are human or not. 160

Mei is also capable of restraint and reflection. After learning that the suffering surrounding Kiana had been orchestrated as part of a larger anti-Honkai plan, she initially lashes out at Chang Yuan but ultimately listens to Himeko's explanation and accepts the burden of playing her assigned role. 210 211

Following her eventual merger with her Herrscher persona, Mei embodies both sides of herself: gentle and caring toward Kiana, but proud, dominant, and composed in battle. 255
