Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Beyond Grade A — established powerhouse 703 803 Introduced among the strongest Beyond Grade As, with multiple Beyond Grade A kills already credited to him. His avatars were substantially weaker than his main body.
Evolution Cube enhancement 851 865 889 Received evolution energy during the Battle of Lighthouse Star. The completed enhancement increased his genetic-chain capacity and reduced individual abilities’ burden, allowing many more powerful clones to operate simultaneously. It did not advance him beyond Beyond Grade A.
Expanded clone-based combat 892 894 Demonstrated dozens of Quasi-Beyond Grade A clones, overwhelming five Beyond Grade As and briefly resisting eleven. This was an application of his evolution rather than a new realm.
Netherland Heroic Spirit 1396 1406 After his death, conversion removed the need to preserve his original living body. His unrestricted combat strength surpassed his performance in life, allowing him to crush Dilron and dominate Tranquil Tree King.

Background / History

Rise of the Fallen Ark

When Sorokin was weak, he lived alone and relied entirely on himself. Han Xiao later connected that upbringing to his refusal to trust companions and his desire to become “omnipotent.” He accumulated Esper abilities in pursuit of a self-created ultra-high-risk ability that could transform him into a new life-form beyond Peak Beyond Grade A 1040.

Sorokin established the Fallen Ark by sheltering interstellar fugitives. Its fleets hid in the Desolate Universe Belts around the Central Galaxy, while his atrocities made him infamous throughout interstellar society. His victims included civilizations whose planets were devastated and whose surviving populations were forced to migrate 802 806 898.

The Three Universal Civilizations repeatedly suppressed the Fallen Ark, but Sorokin survived through overwhelming strength, elusive spatial abilities, and political maneuvering. Although publicly an enemy of order, his attacks on star cluster and super star cluster civilizations sometimes served the universal civilizations’ interests 803 891 896.

First Encounter with Black Star

An avatar assisted the DarkStar leader’s attack on Han Xiao. It overwhelmed Han Xiao, absorbed his mechanical army’s bombardment, and dragged him into a wormhole. Harofal’s machinery retrieved Han Xiao, leaving the avatar to continue its journey alone 703 704.

Sorokin enjoyed observing his avatars’ independent adventures through their mental connection. This particular journey led to an encounter that changed his ambitions. He later ordered his subordinates to obtain Harofal’s wormhole research; Orosen killed Harofal and extracted the information from his memories 704 744 806.

Pursuit of the Evolution Cube

Sorokin believed the Evolution Cube could transform him. He deployed three avatars against the Star Pupil Protoss: one devastated Planet Avitan to draw Sisko away, another attacked the support fleet, and a third transported Eklin’s group to steal the Cube. His Number One avatar destroyed more than twenty cities during the diversion 744 749.

After the Cube came into Han Xiao’s possession, Sorokin proposed cooperation. He deliberately exposed a Fallen Ark detachment to create an apparently legitimate opportunity for Han Xiao to meet him. Han Xiao rejected the arrangement, recognizing that a secret deal could give Sorokin leverage over him 781 803 804 805.

Sorokin then negotiated with the Arcane Church, offering information about the Evolutionary Civilization in return for help obtaining access to the Cube. He wanted to exploit Sisko’s ability to locate it despite Sisko’s hatred of him 807.

Lighthouse Star and Evolution

During the Arcane Church’s assault on Lighthouse Star, Sorokin infiltrated the Palace of Hidden Spells using several abilities in combination. He overwhelmed Austin and helped breach defenses that six Church experts had struggled to penetrate 850.

Han Xiao stopped his interference by firing evolution energy directly at him. Rather than dodge, Sorokin accepted the enhancement he had sought and withdrew from the immediate fight. The resulting genetic optimization greatly expanded his ability to field clones without exhausting his main body’s capacity 851 854 889.

World Tree Secret and Capture

Using Bold Explorer on the wormhole data, Han Xiao saw Sorokin’s avatar reach a planet surrounded by wormholes and World Tree roots. He realized that Sorokin’s research could connect the Explored Universe to the World Tree Civilization and accelerate a catastrophic war 839 840.

Sorokin had concealed the World Tree’s existence while hinting at the wormhole’s significance, hoping others would help research a passage from which he could ultimately benefit. Han Xiao instead pushed for a joint operation by all Three Universal Civilizations 885 886 893.

In the Ancient Star Desert, Sorokin initially treated five pursuing Beyond Grade As as opponents for testing his evolved strength. His clone army reversed their siege, but six concealed reinforcements arrived after Han Xiao activated the spatial trap. Han Xiao then used a Superpower Silence Character Summon Card against him, creating the opening needed to restrain and seal him inside Space-Time Amber 891 892 893 894.

The civilizations publicized the operation as the “Sorokin’s Fall” incident, emphasizing Han Xiao’s role. His capture also interrupted the Fallen Ark’s wormhole research, buying the Explored Universe more preparation time 895 897.

Gaud and Renewed Imprisonment

When Sorokin was later released from the amber, Han Xiao discovered that he suffered from permanent Soul Tear. Han Xiao inferred that he had divided his soul, leaving a separate consciousness in Gaud through Esper Ability: Rebirth 1222 1227.

Han Xiao defeated and resealed the original body. Sorokin stopped resisting after learning that Han Xiao knew about the World Tree, gambling that he would eventually be released to witness its arrival. Han Xiao separately exposed and imprisoned Gaud 1222 1227.

Death and Heroic Spirit Conversion

During the World Tree War, Han Xiao released Sorokin again and confirmed that the World Tree had arrived. Sorokin expected his knowledge and strength to give him negotiating room, but Han Xiao intended to kill him and use his power through Netherland 1370 1394.

Still injured from his previous defeat and unable to teleport through the spatial stabilization field, Sorokin died to three basic attacks from Han Xiao’s Supreme Celestial Venerable. Before dying, he expressed satisfaction at finally witnessing the higher power he had pursued 1394.

Converted into a Heroic Spirit, Sorokin became far stronger without his former bodily restraints. He decisively defeated Dilron and later overwhelmed Tranquil Tree King, whose mistaken belief that Black Star was preparing an ambush drove him to self-destruct. By the postwar period, Sorokin had accepted his fate and abandoned his old grudge against Han Xiao 1396 1406 1407 1446.

Appearance

  • Hooded robe: Usually wore a hood that concealed his face 807.
  • Main body: Possessed ordinary, ugly facial features; during slumber, his face became a swirling mass of black mist 807 885.
  • Avatars: Humanoid figures of black mist with glowing red cores. Damage could disperse the mist and expose the core before the avatar re-formed 703 749.
  • Stored clones: Could condense into black crystal-like spheres with dark red lights at their centers 889 892.

Personality

Sorokin’s central obsession was greater individual power. He wanted to transcend Peak Beyond Grade A and become a fundamentally different life-form, collecting far more abilities than were practical in combat. His self-reliance became a refusal to depend on anyone else 806 1040.

He valued survival without avoiding danger. Repeated suppression campaigns were opportunities to test himself against Beyond Grade As, and he eagerly anticipated measuring his strength after evolution. He could nevertheless exercise restraint: during the joint hunt, he initially preferred driving his pursuers away to killing them and provoking immediate retaliation 889 893.

His pragmatism did not extend to loyalty toward subordinates. He used a Fallen Ark fleet as bait and abandoned it when negotiations with Han Xiao failed. He was also willing to cooperate secretly with the civilizations that publicly hunted him 803 807.

As a Heroic Spirit, he remained proud and confrontational toward other fighters. His eventual acceptance of Han Xiao’s authority did not make him generally submissive 1396 1446.

Abilities & Skills

Esper Ability: Replication

Sorokin could absorb other Espers’ abilities and power them with his own Beyond Grade A attributes 805 1040.

  • Made even abilities with naturally low ceilings effective against Beyond Grade As 805.
  • Expanded his available techniques rather than directly increasing his level or attributes 1040.
  • Required a successful absorption check; he primarily targeted weaker Espers 1040.
  • Could permanently deprive ordinary victims of their abilities, as happened to Rotel 904.
  • Accumulating too many abilities risked genetic-chain collapse. Han Xiao judged that most of his collection had become a burden rather than a combat asset 1040.

Avatars and Clones

Sorokin created energy-based doubles and assigned abilities to them 704 889.

  • Could observe an avatar through their mental connection, control it directly, or allow it to act independently 704.
  • Before evolution, maintaining numerous powerful clones reduced the capacity available to his main body 889.
  • After evolution, deployed dozens of clones with Quasi-Beyond Grade A combat strength 892.
  • Could assign each particular ability to only one clone at a time; abilities assigned to clones were unavailable to his main body 889 892.
  • Clones generally lacked a true Beyond Grade A’s durability and stamina, and their strength depended heavily on their assigned abilities 892 893.
  • Shared a single soul, allowing psychic attacks to affect the main body despite the number of clones 893.

Energy Absorption and Regeneration

Esper Ability: Black Hole absorbed external energy to replenish his reserves 703 889.

  • Converted incoming bombardment into energy, including attacks that restored an avatar’s dwindling reserves 703.
  • Drew stellar energy directly from a star to manufacture clones before battle 889.
  • Combined energy absorption, Health and Mana Conversion, and cellular regeneration to sustain prolonged combat and replace destroyed clones 892 1222.
  • Absorption did not necessarily negate an entire attack; residual force could still injure him 893.
  • In life, rapid regeneration consumed cellular vitality and lifespan 1222.

Superpower Silence

Suppressed an Esper’s genes through close contact, temporarily preventing ability use 805 807.

  • Effective even against Beyond Grade As when powered by Sorokin’s strength 805.
  • Its Character Summon Card version determined success and duration through differences in level, energy, and Luck, with a minimum successful duration of 0.25 seconds 807.
  • Became the decisive counter to Sorokin himself: Han Xiao used that brief interruption to collapse his clone tactics and enable coordinated restraints 894.

Spatial Movement and Defensive Combinations

Sorokin combined teleportation, Dimensional Crevice, energy refraction, and plasma transformation to bypass defenses and control engagement range 805 850.

  • Used energy refraction to redirect concentrated Psionic Energy cannon fire away from his body 805.
  • Penetrated the Palace of Hidden Spells through a combination of abilities rather than raw force alone 850.
  • Could bypass Han Xiao’s Void Domain Prison using spatial abilities 851.
  • Spatial stabilization weakened his escape methods; the completed space-time lockdown disabled teleportation and Dimensional Crevice 891 894.

Ability Enhancement and Rebirth

His collection included abilities useful beyond direct combat 896 1227.

  • Ability Enhancement: Permanently strengthened a lower-grade Esper’s ability and potential; effective only once per target 896.
  • Rebirth: Enabled Gaud to become a new vessel for his consciousness. The new body possessed Energy Manipulation rather than the original body’s genetically rooted ability-absorption power 1220 1227.
  • Age suppression: Required slumber to suppress aging and briefly restore youth, compensating for the cellular burden of his many abilities 807.

Heroic Spirit Combat

Netherland’s conversion let Sorokin use combinations that had previously been too damaging to his living body 1396 1406.

  • Could accept injuries to his temporary body without the same concern for long-term consequences 1406.
  • Absorbed and reflected the force of Tranquil Tree King’s punch 1406.
  • Coordinated clones and chained abilities so tightly that Tranquil Tree King could find no opening 1406.
  • His unrestricted strength led Han Xiao to judge himself the only fighter who could reliably defeat him, with other top experts capable at best of a draw 1396.

Relationships

  • Han Xiao / Black Star — Repeated enemy, captor, and eventual superior. Han Xiao thwarted his Cube schemes, sealed him twice, killed his original body, and arranged his conversion into a Heroic Spirit 805 894 1222 1394 1396.
  • Gaud — A new vessel carrying Sorokin’s consciousness through Rebirth. Gaud watched the original body’s death and lost hope of escape 1227 1394.
  • Harkison — Long-serving Fallen Ark officer who handled negotiations with the Arcane Church; abandoned Sorokin during the joint suppression operation 807 893.
  • Sisko — Enemy whose civilization Sorokin attacked to steal the Evolution Cube. Their hostility prevented direct cooperation over the Cube’s tracking connection 749 807.
  • Harofal — Wormhole researcher who helped Han Xiao escape an avatar. Sorokin’s subordinates later murdered him to obtain his research 703 744 806.
  • Rotel — Survivor whose home was destroyed and Esper ability stolen by Sorokin, leaving him with lasting hatred and trauma 904.
  • Arcane Church — Temporary partner in the Evolution Cube operation, later a participant in the joint hunt that captured him 807 850 885 894.
  • Dilron — Fellow Heroic Spirit whom Sorokin decisively defeated after their confrontation over status and strength 1396.
  • Tranquil Tree King — World Tree opponent whom Sorokin overwhelmed before the Tree King self-destructed to avoid an imagined Black Star ambush 1406 1407.

Notable Quotes

“Black Star, we’ll meet again sooner or later.” 894

“You didn’t disappoint me... You really did reach... the level I dreamed of. At least before I die... I’ve seen a greater power... It was worth it...” 1394

Trivia

  • Campaigns against the Fallen Ark were so routine that the Three Universal Civilizations’ activities were jokingly summarized as “eating, sleeping, and fighting Sorokin” 802.
  • In Han Xiao’s previous timeline, Esper players sold Sorokin their abilities because death and revival restored them. The Three Universal Civilizations outlawed voluntarily supplying him this way, though players frequently evaded the policy 1040.
  • Han Xiao used Sorokin’s genetic instability as a cautionary example when planning Evans’s development, favoring a small, carefully selected ability collection over indiscriminate absorption 1040.
