Dimensionality Reduction Strike
Abandoned farm camp in East Africa.
Night fell like a vast, ink-soaked velvet cloth, blanketing the land and swallowing the day's heat and glaring sunlight, leaving only a dry, cool air carrying the scent of sand and camel grass. The campfire in the center of the camp was still burning, but its flames had dwindled considerably, its orange glow barely illuminating a few weary faces. Most had returned to their tents to rest, leaving only the shadowy figures of those on night watch moving silently along the edge of the camp.
A faint light still shone from the screen of the ruggedized laptop in Captain Locke's tent. He had just finished a brief, frustrating internal meeting with his vice-captain, "Anvil."
Initial communication with the anonymous client (whom they had already mentally labeled the "Ghost Boss") was progressing slowly. After providing the one-time encrypted communication link, the supposedly "more specific information" offered remained vague, filled with words like "possible," "leaning," and "suspected." Regarding "K's" background, aside from repeatedly emphasizing his technical capabilities and the possibility of "strong support," there was almost nothing else provided. The range given for his possible hiding place remained ridiculously broad.
"This is like asking us to find a specific grain of sand in the Sahara Desert," Anvil complained, scratching his bald head in frustration. "' The Ghost Boss ' is either stupid, or bad, or both. He has no idea what he's looking for and just wants us to try our luck."
Locke was also facing a dilemma. The high bounty was still tempting, but the investigation costs, time costs, and potential risks were all skyrocketing. They needed more precise navigation, which the "Ghost Boss" clearly couldn't provide. He began to seriously consider whether to abandon this seemingly trap-filled job, even though the money was tempting.
"Wait a little longer," he said to the Anvil, as if to himself, "And see if they can still squeeze anything out of us. If there's no substantial progress by tomorrow morning, we'll tell them we need a substantial 'reconnaissance start-up fee' first, otherwise forget about it." This is standard practice in the mercenary world, used to filter out unreliable employers and empty promises.
Just as Locke was about to close his laptop and end this frustrating day, an extremely inconspicuous, even unmarked, encrypted communication software icon in the lower right corner of the screen suddenly began to flash a ghostly green light silently.
It wasn't any of their usual communication tools, nor was it a message notification from a dark web platform. The icon seemed to appear out of thin air, lying quietly in the corner of the system tray, gleaming with an undeniable, cold light.
Locke's muscles tensed instantly, and his left hand almost instinctively gripped the pistol at his waist. Anvil also noticed the anomaly, abruptly raising his head and sharply staring at the screen.
"What is that?" Anvil asked in a low voice, as if afraid of disturbing the Ghost on the screen.
Locke didn't answer; he stared intently at the icon. He had personally set up the computer—firewall, anti-spyware software, physical isolation measures... He was confident that no one could implant such a thing silently. Unless... the other party's intrusion methods were completely beyond his comprehension.
He stared at the green dot for a few seconds, took a deep breath, moved his hand away from the gun, and used his slightly cool fingertips to manipulate the touchpad, tapping the icon.
There was no complicated verification, no login screen. The moment you clicked, an extremely simple, almost unadorned, pure black dialog box popped up, taking up the center of the screen. The dialog box contained only a line of English text in standard white font, and a simple input box below it:
[Connection established. Please verify your identity: Blood Spear Mercenary Corps, Leader, Locke.]
There were no greetings, no explanations, just a direct, almost brutal response. Moreover, the other party accurately called him by his name and mercenary group's code name. A chill ran down Locke's spine.
He looked at the Anvil, Anvil gaze was equally solemn. The anvil nodded to him, indicating a cautious response.
Locke's fingers hovered over the keyboard for a moment before typing a reply, "I am Locke. Who are you? How did you find this place?"
send.
The reply came almost instantly, equally concise:
Who I am is unimportant. What matters is the commission you just made on the dark web regarding 'K'. Abandon it.
Locke's pupils contracted. Not only did they know their identities, but they were also monitoring their interactions with the "Ghost Boss" in real time! The intelligence capabilities behind this...
He forced himself to stay calm and quickly replied, "Reason? It's a big deal."
[That's not business, that's a dead end. The person who issued the commission is Xie Yunchuan. Your target, 'K,' is someone he can't afford to offend, and someone you certainly can't afford to offend either.]
Xie Yunchuan? Locke remembered the name. But what alarmed him even more was the second half of the sentence: "Someone you can't afford to offend?" Could the "powerful background" implied by the "Ghost Boss" be true?
"Words are meaningless. We have our own judgment," Locke probed.
This time, the reply was a second or two slower, but the content was even more shocking:
[The judgment is based on the following: Xie Yunchuan, a former core money laundering partner of a telecom fraud syndicate in Northern Myanmar Xie Yunchuan escaped the net and is currently hiding on the border of N countries in Southeast Asia, at coordinates: X. XXXXX, Y. YYYYY. He hired you as a last-ditch effort.]
A concise text, yet it contained explosive information. Locke had heard a little about what was happening in Northern Myanmar; he knew that a major warlord had fallen, but the details were unclear. If what the other party said was true... a raid that could easily crush such local armed groups—the power behind it was indeed not something "Blood Spear" could easily touch.
"Why should I believe you?" Locke's fingers were a little stiff.
He was answered with three pictures, which were displayed directly in the dialog box.
The first image appears to be a satellite view, clearly marking a villa nestled in the mountains, with precise coordinates listed next to it (consistent with the other party's description), and even marking several possible sniper positions and patrol blind spots with red circles.
The second photo is an enlarged image of a middle-aged Asian man in pajamas with a sinister expression standing on a villa's terrace. Although the resolution isn't top-of-the-line, his features are clearly discernible. Below it is a small caption: Xie Yunchuan, taken 48 hours ago.
The third image is a complex architectural sketch, clearly showing the interior layout of the villa, with even load-bearing walls, pipe layouts, and possible secret room locations marked.
The precision, detail, and real-time nature of the intelligence left Locke and Anvil speechless. This was something no ordinary intelligence broker could obtain. What the other side was demonstrating was a surveillance capability akin to a "God's-eye view."
New text continued to appear in the dialog box, this time carrying an undeniable, calm yet powerful force:
[Now, let's talk business. Abandon Xie Yunchuan's commission and work for me.]
Locke's heart raced. "Work for you? What for? Price?"
[Mission: Using the equipment I provide, proceed to the above coordinates and completely eliminate Xie Yunchuan and all armed personnel around him. Requirements: Confirm the target's death and provide irrefutable evidence. Leave no survivors and do not expose yourself.]
Almost identical to the "Ghost Boss's" request, but with completely opposite objectives! And, "Use the equipment I provide"?
"The price," Locke repeated, his voice hoarse.
[Prepayment: US$100 million. Another US$100 million will be paid upon confirmation of task completion. Total: US$200 million. Funds are currently verifiable.]
Two hundred million US dollars.
Locke felt his breath catch in his throat. The Anvil beside him stared wide-eyed, letting out a hissing sound as if someone was choking him. This amount was more than double the "Ghost Boss's " bounty! And it was a clear two-stage payment, half in advance! More importantly, the target was clear (Xie Yunchuan), the intelligence was infuriatingly precise, and they even provided equipment! This wasn't a commission; it was practically... giving them money, and letting them take revenge on the side? (If what they said was true, Xie Yunchuan was trying to send them to their deaths.)
"Equipment? What equipment?" Anvil couldn't help but lean closer to the screen and growl.
[Based on mission requirements and your current equipment shortages, the preliminary list is as follows: two ' Little Bird ' light attack helicopters (already fitted with basic armor and weapon hardpoints); four M134 7.62mm rotary machine guns and their accompanying ammunition belts (10,000 rounds per gun); twenty sets of fourth-generation individual low-light/infrared fusion night vision devices; forty sets of the latest individual tactical communication systems (including anti-jamming modules); ten M32A1 40mm revolver grenade launchers and their accompanying ammunition; thirty HK416A7 assault rifles (equipped with holographic sights, laser designators, and suppressors) and sufficient ammunition; and a quantity of special equipment such as explosive cord, plastic explosives, and thermal imaging drones. The equipment will be delivered to your designated safe area within 36 hours through a 'legal' military contracting company (coordinates required). Inspection of the goods is permitted beforehand.]
The list hit Locke and Anvil like a hammer blow. This wasn't just the "new stuff" they'd been dreaming of; this was top-tier equipment that many regular special forces units might not even be fully equipped with! "Little Bird" helicopters? M134 Vulcan amphibious assault rifles? Fourth-generation night vision goggles? These things, the other side just gave them away like that, and promised delivery within 36 hours?
The sheer power behind this made Locke feel dizzy. His previous speculations about the "powerful background" behind "K" were now magnified infinitely, becoming incredibly real and terrifying. For someone who could casually mobilize such high-level military resources, crushing their "Blood Spear" would be easier than crushing ants.
"What if we refuse?" Locke asked the foolish question almost instinctively, and immediately regretted it.
The dialog box was silent for a few seconds, then the last line of text appeared:
[You won't refuse. The deposit verification channel is now open. Give me a reply within one hour, along with the coordinates to receive the equipment. Latecomers will not be accepted.]
Below the text appeared an encrypted Bitcoin wallet address and a short verification code. Simultaneously, the other party sent a one-time encrypted number that could be dialed via satellite phone, used to confirm the coordinates and for subsequent contact.
Then, the dialog box closed automatically, and the eerie green icon disappeared from the system tray as if it had never existed. Only the Bitcoin address on the screen representing the exorbitant deposit, and the breathtaking list of equipment in my mind, proved that what had just happened was not an illusion.
The tent was deathly silent. The only sounds were the faint hum of the computer fan and the heavy breathing of the two people inside.
Anvil licked his chapped lips, his voice hoarse. "Boss... this..."
Locke stared at the screen, a fine layer of cold sweat beading on his forehead. He recalled the other party's description of Northern Myanmar, the terrifyingly precise intelligence images, and the understated yet weighty "two hundred million US dollars" and equipment list.
Refuse? They weren't even given the option to refuse. That wasn't a discussion; that was a notification. The consequences of refusing might be worse than touching that mysterious "K".
Accepting? It would mean they would turn their guns on their original employer, "Xie Yunchuan," and use the equipment he provided—enough to wage a small war—to carry out a decapitation operation with one party's intelligence completely transparent. Then, they would take away two hundred million US dollars and a batch of top-tier equipment that they would never normally dare to dream of.
Risk and reward, fear and greed, battled fiercely in Locke's mind. But just seconds later, the scales tipped completely.
What the other side displayed was a complete and utterly overwhelming difference in strength. Faced with such power, the so-called mercenary code, the code of honor, and the fear of the unknown all seemed laughable and fragile. They were just knives selling their lives for money, and now, a sharper "hand," with outrageously high pay and an unimaginably strong grip on the hilt, had reached out to them. They had no reason, nor the ability, to refuse.
Locke exhaled a heavy breath, the last trace of struggle in his eyes replaced by a cold resolve. He looked at the Anvil, Anvil gaze had also turned fiery and fierce, and the anvil nodded firmly at him.
"Reply to him." Locke's voice returned to its usual cold hardness, but trembled slightly. "We'll accept. Tell him that after the deposit is verified, send the receiving coordinates immediately. Also..." He paused, then added, "Find out whether there are any time restrictions on the operation, and... whether we need to leave any 'special souvenirs' for that ' Mr. K '."
Anvil immediately sat down at the computer, his hands trembling slightly with excitement, and began to verify the deposit and reply according to the instructions left by the other party. He knew that from this moment on, the fate of "Blood Spear" had been completely changed.
Outside the window, the Africa night sky hangs low with stars, indifferently watching yet another insignificant shift in loyalty based on violence and money on this land.
Meanwhile, K, far away in the safe house, calmly closed the communication interface after receiving a brief and respectful confirmation reply from "Blood Spear," as if he had simply finished processing a routine purchasing order.
The hunting dogs have been trained, fed fresh meat, and their claws and teeth have been sharpened.
Now, all that's left is for them to pounce on that rabid, defeated dog still lurking in the darkness, oblivious to its fate.
