When Are You Bringing My Son-in-Law Home?
That afternoon, Lin Yi checked the time and decided to tell his mom and dad that he and Su Wanqing had gotten their marriage certificates.
He took out his phone and video-called Jiang Yuehua. After only a few rings, a voice came from the other end.
When Jiang Yuehua saw that Lin Yi had called her of his own accord, she figured something good had happened. Otherwise, he wouldn't have called her himself, for fear she'd scold him.
"Son, do you have some good news?"
"Yeah, your daughter-in-law and I got our marriage certificates."
Lin Yi spoke proudly, then held up their marriage certificates.
Jiang Yuehua saw the embossed seals and nodded in satisfaction. "You brat, well done. Give the phone to my daughter-in-law."
"Oh."
Lin Yi nodded. His standing in the family had taken a serious nosedive. He covered the receiver and said to Su Wanqing:
"Honey, my mom wants to talk to you."
"Huh? What do I say?"
Hearing that Jiang Yuehua wanted to talk to her, Su Wanqing grew nervous. After all this time, this was her first meeting with Lin Yi's parents, and it was happening like this.
She didn't know what to say. Should she call her Auntie or Mom?
Thinking that even an ugly daughter-in-law had to meet her in-laws sooner or later, she braced herself and took the phone. Where she came from, the custom was to change how you addressed your in-laws only after the wedding, so she intended to call her Auntie.
But when she opened her mouth, "Mom" suddenly came out.
Su Wanqing's little face turned red in an instant. How had she said something different from what she'd intended?
Jiang Yuehua, on the other hand, was delighted to hear it. "Yes, my dear daughter-in-law! Has Xiao Yi been treating you well lately?"
"If he bullies you, I'll deal with that brat for you."
"Wanqing, whatever it is, big or small, just tell Xiao Yi to help you. Don't wear yourself out."
"..."
Jiang Yuehua rattled on and on, every word taking her precious daughter-in-law's side.
She could tell that Su Wanqing was a good girl, and she wasn't the sort of wicked mother-in-law people feared. On the contrary, she would treat her like a daughter.
Su Wanqing went from being nervous at first to feeling relaxed. She could sense Jiang Yuehua's kindness toward her.
After they chatted for a long time, Su Wanqing handed the phone to Lin Yi with a smile. "Hubby~ Our mom has something to say to you."
"Okay."
Lin Yi nodded and took the phone.
On the screen, Jiang Yuehua spoke very seriously. "Son, I'll start helping you two prepare for the wedding tomorrow. I promise Wanqing will marry into our family in grand style."
"Talk it over with Wanqing and decide when we should visit her family."
"We can't leave out a single one of the three letters and six rites."
"Okay, sure."
Lin Yi answered softly. His mother had thought things through, so he felt reassured.
After hanging up, he went over to Su Wanqing and said gently, "Honey, when should we visit your family? Even an ugly son-in-law has to meet his father-in-law and mother-in-law."
"Um... let's wait a little longer."
Su Wanqing lowered her head in thought. Her parents didn't know she had been pregnant or that she had given birth. She had kept all of it from them.
If she suddenly brought Lin Yi and the children home, there was no telling what her dad would do to him.
Lin Yi didn't know what Su Wanqing was thinking.
But he could tell she had concerns. Now that they were husband and wife, he wanted to help his wife shoulder the burden.
"Honey, whatever's worrying you, let's talk it over together."
After hearing what Lin Yi had to say, Su Wanqing hesitated for a while before finally telling him.
"Actually... my parents don't know I was pregnant or that I had children. I haven't been home at all this past year."
"Honey, I'm sorry you had to shoulder all of that alone."
Lin Yi hadn't known there was another reason. His heart ached as he pulled Su Wanqing into his arms and comforted her softly. "It's okay. They'll find out sooner or later, so we should tell them sooner."
"I'll make sure Uncle and Auntie are satisfied with me."
"Okay."
Su Wanqing nodded and wrapped her arms around Lin Yi. With him there, she wasn't afraid of anything anymore.
Meanwhile, in an apartment building in Fengtian, Su Youzhi was leaning back on the sofa and playing on his phone after dinner.
He kept chuckling as he looked through the posts the old men had shared on their Moments.
Old Zhang downstairs had just posted one: "Who threw a banana peel downstairs? I almost took a tumble. If I'd busted my tailbone, I'd have held you responsible."
He had still been grinning, but when he saw Su Wanqing's post, he rubbed his eyes in disbelief.
The embossed seals on the certificates were conspicuous. They were obviously real.
Su Wanqing would never have dreamed that her dad had started scrolling through Moments. If she had known, she definitely would have blocked him from seeing it beforehand.
Realizing that his little cotton-padded jacket was really married, Su Youzhi hurriedly called Fang Yan out. "Honey, honey, come out here, quick!"
"Something big has happened!"
Fang Yan, who was washing dishes in the kitchen, hurried out when she heard him shouting. She rolled her eyes. "What are you hollering about? What big thing?"
Afraid Fang Yan wouldn't believe him, Su Zhidong quickly handed her the phone. "Honey, our daughter got married."
"You're always talking nonsense."
"If you don't believe me, take a look."
Seeing that Fang Yan didn't believe him, he showed her the screen.
One look was enough to give her a fright. She froze on the spot. "How could our daughter get married without telling us? It's not like we're those close-minded parents."
"Honestly, that child."
"Hey, honey, you know what? The guy our daughter found is pretty good-looking."
Fang Yan rolled her eyes at Su Yongzhi. "Is now the time to worry about that? Hurry up and call our daughter. Ask her what's going on."
"Right, right. You're right, honey."
Su Zhidong grinned, then quickly video-called Su Wanqing.
Su Wanqing, who was in Lin Yi's arms, saw that her dad was video-calling. She hurriedly sat up and motioned for her husband not to speak.
After the call connected, she said in a soft, sweet voice, "Dad, I miss you something fierce."
Lin Yi hadn't expected Su Wanqing to speak with such a strong Northeastern accent the moment she opened her mouth. He found it quite entertaining.
"Yeah, Dad misses his girl too. Um... um..."
Seeing Su Zhidong hesitate, unable to get the words out, Fang Yan snatched the phone from him. "Qingqing, has work been tiring lately?"
"No, it hasn't. Mom, don't you worry."
"Qingqing, don't you have anything to tell your dad and me?" Fang Yan asked tactfully.
Su Wanqing didn't know that her mom and dad already knew she was married. Although Lin Yi had just said they should tell them sooner rather than later, she was afraid her parents wouldn't be able to accept it all at once, so she thought it would be better to tell them about these things gradually.
"No. Mom, Dad, do you have something to tell me?"
Seeing the two of them hemming and hawing, Su Wanqing thought they probably had something important to say.
"Well... did you get married? Your dad only found out when he was scrolling through Moments tonight."
"Sweetie, I don't mean to scold you, but your dad and I aren't close-minded parents. Why didn't you tell us?"
"Mom, I didn't mean to keep it from you. Actually..."
Seeing Su Wanqing hesitate, Fang Yan immediately said, "When are you bringing my son-in-law home?"
