Background / History
Command of Chicken Coop Base
Xu Feng commands a classified frontline airbase concealed in a mountain valley near Yuzhou. Before Li Zhi’s arrival, he has only two other pilots available, leaving the squadron struggling to maintain its border patrols. He personally welcomes the newcomer and takes responsibility for his training rather than dismissing him as an inexperienced graduate 17.
His hostility toward Peacock Country predates Li Zhi’s posting. Xu Feng witnessed an earlier confrontation in which his wingman collided with a Peacock fighter, and he remains bitter whenever he encounters their aircraft. During Li Zhi’s first patrol, he orders them to retrace their route specifically to force Peacock’s recently landed fighters to scramble again 18.
Training Li Zhi
On Li Zhi’s third day at the base, Xu Feng lets him fly a two-seat Eighth Master. This is not a trainer: its rear seat cannot directly override the front-seat controls. Having heard Lei Hu’s praise of Li Zhi, Xu Feng uses the flight to assess how soon the newcomer can qualify for solo operations 17.
Li Zhi’s subsequent Cobra Maneuver and uneven-flap spin exceed Xu Feng’s expectations—and leave him dizzy in the rear seat. Recognizing that the rookie is already capable of flying alone, Xu Feng immediately submits his application. Lei Hu approves it, making Li Zhi the Southern Military Region’s earliest pilot cleared for solo flight. Since Li Zhi has no assigned aircraft yet, Xu Feng lends him his own fighter 19.
Armed Drone and Security Breach
When Li Zhi encounters a second drone during target practice, Xu Feng establishes that the base launched only one training target. He orders the unidentified armed drone shot down and immediately reports the intrusion to Lei Hu rather than attempting to conceal the security failure 21.
Xu Feng remains at the base to coordinate reports and exchange intelligence with ground troops searching for the drone’s operators, Liu Lei and Liu Xin. With the other pilots still needed for border patrols, he sends Li Zhi on a night flight to collect infrared equipment from 201 Airport. The equipment enables Li Zhi to locate the fugitives 22 23 24.
Afterward, Xu Feng is summoned to division headquarters while Zeng Yuan temporarily takes command. He returns with a military-region commendation for Li Zhi, feeling guilty that the base’s negligence prevented the incident from earning Li Zhi a third-class merit medal 24.
Forced Landing and Aircraft Replacement
When the Eighth Master flown by Li Zhi develops problems in both engines, Xu Feng orders him to eject. Li Zhi refuses because preserving the aircraft could reveal a fault threatening other pilots. Xu Feng understands his reasoning but orders immediate ejection if the remaining engine fails and catches fire. From the tower, he also coordinates a visual landing-gear check and warns Li Zhi when the aircraft’s tail catches fire again 26.
Li Zhi survives the forced landing, preserving the fighter for investigation but leaving the base with only two serviceable aircraft. Xu Feng presses Lei Hu for replacements and obtains a promise of priority delivery within a month. He personally collects the investigating engineers by helicopter to protect the base’s classified location 27 28.
Xu Feng later sends Li Zhi to accept four Jiaolong 10Bs, arranging transport through division headquarters so he can collect his merit medal on the same trip. He wants the aircraft formally secured before another unit can persuade Lei Hu to reallocate them 30.
Border Confrontations and Special Mission
Xu Feng supports Li Zhi’s efforts to unsettle Peacock’s pilots but prepares reinforcements when his low-altitude flying takes him off radar. When the maneuver triggers a wider alert, Xu Feng activates satellite communications and orders him back to the designated altitude 35 36.
After the confrontation ends, Xu Feng insists on a detailed report despite privately admiring the disruption Li Zhi caused. He later explains that Peacock shot down its own uncontrollable fighter and that Dragon Country cannot openly claim responsibility for the outcome 38 39.
During preparations to reclaim territory near Great Snow Mountain, Xu Feng assigns Li Zhi a deliberate diversion: occupy Peacock’s fighters and buy time for the ground forces. His instructions are to stay safe and not fire first, with nearby bases ready to intervene. His repeated emphasis on safety also signals that self-preservation takes precedence over the firing restriction 43 44.
Xu Feng subsequently joins the airborne response and witnesses Li Zhi use a jettisoned drop tank to bring down a Peacock fighter without destroying it. Once the aircraft is down, Xu Feng and the other supporting pilots continue toward the border while Li Zhi returns to resupply 49.
Personality
Xu Feng dislikes bureaucratic ceremony. He invites Li Zhi to address him by name, welcomes him warmly despite his inexperience, and readily jokes with his subordinates. His mischievous side appears when he proposes embarrassing chicken-themed call signs for Li Zhi while refusing to reveal his own 17.
He combines hostility toward Peacock with concern for his pilots. He encourages resistance to provocation, but orders Li Zhi to eject during the engine emergency and repeatedly makes safety the priority before the diversion mission. He is also persistent about obtaining resources, using his audience with Lei Hu to press for both replacement fighters and additional funding 18 26 28 44.
Abilities & Skills
Flight Instruction and Assessment
Xu Feng assesses new pilots through supervised flying rather than relying solely on academy reports 17 19.
- Recognizes Li Zhi’s readiness for solo flight and promptly submits the required application 19.
- Cannot grant final solo-flight clearance himself; approval rests with division headquarters 19.
Squadron and Emergency Coordination
Xu Feng directs patrol assignments, training, security responses, and flight emergencies from the base 17 21 22 26.
- Coordinates with ground search forces and reports developments to higher command during the intelligence breach 22.
- Uses satellite communications when low-altitude flight interrupts ordinary radio contact 35 36.
- Covers flying duties himself when the squadron’s limited personnel and aircraft are stretched 29.
Equipment / Aircraft
- Eighth Master fighter — Xu Feng’s assigned aircraft, which he jokingly calls his “first wife.” He lends it to Li Zhi for training and patrols while the newcomer awaits an aircraft 19 24 25.
- Two-seat Eighth Master — Used for Li Zhi’s initial supervised flights; the rear cockpit lacks direct control-override authority 17.
- Continued Eighth Master use — Xu Feng is still flying the older model when One-Eyed Wolf notices Li Zhi’s newly delivered Jiaolong 10 37.
Relationships
- Li Zhi — Subordinate and initial trainee. Xu Feng becomes an early supporter of his ability, lends him his aircraft, and regrets when secrecy or the base’s failures limit his recognition 17 19 24 39.
- Lei Hu — Division commander and former direct superior. Their familiarity allows Xu Feng to complain bluntly about shortages, though Lei Hu readily rebukes his attempts to extract further concessions 28 30.
- Liao Yifei — Subordinate pilot and frequent participant in squadron banter. Xu Feng uses Li Zhi’s rapid achievements to push him to improve 39 40.
- Zeng Yuan — Senior squadron pilot who temporarily assumes Xu Feng’s duties during his absence at division headquarters 24.
- One-Eyed Wolf — Pilot from the neighboring Wolf’s Lair base and a familiar verbal sparring partner. Their teasing stops immediately when Lei Hu orders them to monitor unusual Peacock activity 37.
Notable Quotes
“I'm the base's squadron leader. My name's Xu Feng. Just call me by my name. We don't stand on ceremony with titles here!” 17
“Don't dwell on it. You deserve credit for this, not blame!” 22
“There are only two requirements this time. First, keep yourself safe. Second, do not open fire first!” 44
Trivia
- Old Hen is inherited, not chosen. Each departing Chicken Coop squadron leader passes the call sign to the next through a final order. Despite his embarrassment, Xu Feng is expected to perpetuate the tradition himself 29.
- Xu Feng admits that he had not brought down a Peacock aircraft in four years when congratulating Li Zhi on his indirect role in the loss of one 39.
