Background / History
Transmigration and Black Crow Castle
Chen Mo was a university student in modern Xia State who earned travel money through tutoring. During a beach trip, he entered the sea to help rescue a child despite having little open-water swimming experience. The child survived, but Chen Mo drowned and subsequently awakened on the Starry Continent 1.
Guards belonging to Archmage Black Crow recovered him, and he became a servant at the archmage’s castle beside the Dark Forest. His education helped him stand out, allowing him to become a preparatory apprentice and summon a skeleton spearman. Menial work, including cleaning undead creatures, left him little time for cultivation 1 2.
Aili’s favorable treatment of him attracted the hostility of Young Master Zircon. Assigned to the noble’s expedition against a Dark Demon Tree, Chen Mo recognized that the mission could provide an opportunity to murder him. With local avenues of assistance exhausted, he attempted a Bloodline Sacrifice directed toward his homeland 1 2 4.
Contact with Eastern Xia and Escape
The sacrifice succeeded. Eastern Xia sent firearms, protective equipment, medical supplies, survival gear, and a letter urging him to prioritize his safety. The response moved Chen Mo to tears and established the cross-world support network on which his subsequent development depended 3 4.
During the expedition, Little White killed Young Master Zircon, forcing Chen Mo to abandon any prospect of returning to Black Crow Castle. He compelled Aili and Little Eleven to guide him toward Six-Leaf Woodland, but Aili trapped him in ice and attempted to report him. Little White shot her; Little Eleven then wounded Chen Mo with crossbow bolts before Chen Mo killed him 7 8.
At Six-Leaf Woodland, the young centaur Kajia helped him seek treatment. Witch Doctor Big Eye demanded ten gold coins, which Chen Mo could not afford, but Kajia eventually brought him to Cloudmist Territory’s party, where Master Locke treated his injuries. Chen Mo later secured passage on their chartered airship by offering two finely engraved gold pieces 10 11 12.
Before their paths separated at White Stone Outpost, Liushuang gave him a fifth-tier healing medicine. He reciprocated with a thermite grenade—an exchange that later proved important to both parties 14 22 34.
Mercenary Registration and Magical Education
After defeating the Mountain Vine adventurers hired to target him, Chen Mo reached White Stone City. With Old John’s help, he registered as a zero-rank mercenary, sold recovered equipment, hired Josie and Little John as guides, and paid to keep the black-market pursuit mission against him locked for six months 16 18.
His search for immediate magical instruction led to Deputy Director Vincent. Through bribes and a covert substitution, Chen Mo entered Master Har’s preparatory mage tower under the identity of Roy, an apprentice whose position had been used by a Mercenary Guild informant 23 24 27.
Initially the weakest member of Glimmer Group Three, Chen Mo pursued an intensive training schedule. Morton’s hostility toward an apparent wealthy wastrel gave way to respect for his diligence and comprehension. Remedial lessons corrected his incomplete education, while Psionic Diversion and eventual enlightenment greatly improved his cross-world logistics 28 29 31 34.
Alliance with Cloudmist Territory
Liushuang’s medicine saved a prominent Eastern Xia scholar, prompting Chen Mo to seek further supplies. Upon reuniting with her party, he obtained three additional pills and later negotiated a fifty-year transfer agreement for her future supply of Life’s Eternal Song. In return, he used concealed recording equipment to help her recite her etiquette lessons 22 34 36.
After Morton urged him to leave, Chen Mo traveled with Cloudmist Territory’s party while continuing his cultivation. The Zircon Family’s pursuit escalated into armed conflict. Chen Mo helped Peiwen kill Tikpot with rifle fire and a thermobaric grenade, then agreed to remain with the group after Peiwen promised an independent territory, a pioneering-knight certificate, and an introduction to a magic teacher 35 37 39.
During the ensuing flight, his drones supplied reconnaissance and his summoned weapons helped the party overcome enemy forces. Their route took them through the Dark Forest, Green Luo Mountain Pass, and the war-torn territory beyond the Crystal River 40 41 42 43.
Peiwen’s Death and the Iron Thorn Forest
Peiwen sacrificed himself to prevent the enemy from locating Liushuang and the remaining survivors. Chen Mo stopped her from rushing onto the battlefield and took over the group’s practical direction, but soon discovered that his authority had depended on Peiwen’s backing. When his orders were disregarded, he announced his intention to leave; drone reconnaissance then exposed approaching soldiers and Eliel’s betrayal 46 47.
After the rest of the party died, Chen Mo fled into the Iron Thorn Forest with Liushuang and the badly injured Little White. He used Skylark to plant a diversionary bomb, then escaped with Liushuang aboard the Flying Shuttle. His subsequent use of the new Wasp made the pursuers increasingly reluctant to close in, allowing the pair to reach the Xinpo River 49 50.
Appearance
- Generally good-looking, with a bearing that attracts attention among the castle apprentices 1.
- Black eyes and yellow skin, noted from Young Master Zircon’s perspective 5.
- Initially poor physical conditioning: he struggles through dense jungle and must also help his stumbling skeleton summon along the route 5.
Personality
Chen Mo is observant and socially resourceful. He recognizes Aili’s cultivation of prospective admirers, detects Zircon’s hostility, and later lets strangers infer a prestigious family background without explicitly claiming one. His invented history provides cover for his unusual possessions and lack of a verifiable local identity 1 17.
His defining habit is relentless study. At the mage tower, he sacrifices leisure and conversation to meditation and spell practice; when Morton’s recovery potion reduces his required rest, he uses the saved time for more cultivation. He maintains similarly strict routines while traveling with Cloudmist Territory 29 31 36.
His early confidence exceeds his experience with lethal conflict. Leaving Aili and Little Eleven armed and unrestricted nearly gets him killed, and the shock of being wounded briefly disrupts his control of Little White. He subsequently becomes more cautious about ambushes, equipment readiness, and the limits of his weapons 8 15 39.
Despite his pragmatism, Chen Mo retains strong attachments to kindness, reciprocity, and his homeland. He sincerely thanks Kajia, insists on paying Morton for valuable assistance, and sends detailed magical knowledge home. His gratitude does not make him unconditionally obedient: he refuses to remain responsible for a group that will not accept his command 11 30 31 34 47.
Abilities & Skills
Undead Summoning
Chen Mo’s original magical training centers on summoning an undead creature through an altar. His first summon is the skeleton spearman Little White, also called Xiaobai 1.
- Directs Little White in combat, including the use of modern firearms 7 8.
- Uses its body and attached storage as a carrier and “skeleton safe” for equipment and valuables 18 35.
- Can lose precise control under severe pain or shock; the summon then instinctively attempts to protect him 8.
- Becomes capable of summoning a strong zombie after enlightenment, but prioritizes transporting technological equipment instead 40.
Bloodline Sacrifice and Cross-World Transport
Bloodline Sacrifice connects Chen Mo’s altar to Eastern Xia through a positioning beacon and an elaborate true-name incantation 2.
- Receives weapons, money, supplies, analytical tools, and technical advice from Blue Star 4 22 41.
- Sends medicine, magical items, biological specimens, soil, recordings, and cultivation notes home for research 20 31 34.
- Initially requires nearly a month between sacrifices because of his weak mental power; forced activation with a potion causes prolonged aftereffects 15 19.
- Depends heavily on activation frequency and shipment weight. Technological equipment largely avoids the cross-space overload problems that constrain conventional summons 19.
- Gains a major capacity increase after opening his Elemental Pool 40.
Psionic Diversion
Psionic Diversion divides magical operations into smaller, weakened components. Although its initial energy requirements are low, its complex model demands precise control 19 30.
- Demonstrates three-, four-, and six-way diversion to Morton and his classmates 31.
- Concentrates on reliable four-way diversion after Morton advises him to prioritize fundamental strength 31.
- Applies the technique to a diversion-style summoning altar 31.
- Is warned not to divert offensive spells before mastering the model independently 30.
Meditation and Spell Fundamentals
Morton teaches Chen Mo the Blue Leaf Meditation Method for mental strength and the Glimmer Spell, or Basic Illumination Spell, for mana training 28.
- Learns how mental power, mana, spell models, materials, and external psionic energy interact 29.
- Constructs a Glimmer Spell model that Morton praises as flawless 29.
- Uses nourishing tea, magical materials, and recovery potions to sustain intensive practice 29 31.
- Receives explicit instruction to inspect casting materials against contamination or sabotage 30.
Technological Combat and Reconnaissance
Chen Mo combines imported weapons with reconnaissance equipment and plans supplied by Eastern Xia 22 41 42.
- Uses rifles and grenades against enemies who vastly exceed his personal physical strength 15 39.
- Provides drone reconnaissance to replace lost scouts, identify patrols, and guide evasive movement 42 47.
- Employs remote explosives as diversions during pursuit 49.
- Recognizes that automatic rifle fire and even grenades cannot reliably kill advanced warriors: an entire magazine fails to stop Tikpot outright 39.
Negotiation and Concealment
- Builds a plausible aristocratic cover identity around his surname and supposed estrangement from his family 17.
- Uses a concealed camera and microexpression analyzer during negotiations with Vincent 23.
- Presents imported technology as creations of a “Cyber King” or “Mechanical Emperor,” disguising its actual source 35 40.
- Uses hidden recordings and sound-confined earbuds to coach Liushuang’s recitations rather than genuinely solving her memorization difficulties 36 37.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- QBZ-95-1 automatic rifle — part of Eastern Xia’s first support package; supplied with magazines and additional ammunition 4.
- QSZ-92G pistol — his initial sidearm, also supplied with spare ammunition 4.
- Grenades — offensive, defensive, thermite, and thermobaric types serve different battlefield purposes 15 36 39.
- Protective and survival equipment — includes a stab-resistant vest with inserts, a Kevlar cut-resistant glove, medical supplies, and a fallback letter requesting local assistance 4 15.
- Microexpression analyzer — concealed support equipment used to interpret Vincent’s reactions 23.
- Recording equipment and memory cards — preserve lessons, observations, and cultivation records for transfer to Blue Star 29 31.
- Weather station and automated sample collectors — gather environmental data and specimens around Glimmer Group Three’s grounds 34.
- Three Big-Headed Eagle loitering munitions — each weighs twenty-three kilograms and carries a warhead combining thermobaric, white phosphorus, and nerve-gas components 41.
- Anti-materiel rifle and light sniper rifle — supplied for heavily defended targets and long-range attacks respectively; the heavier rifle uses tungsten-core armor-piercing ammunition 41.
- Skylark and Flying Shuttle — Skylark plants a diversionary bomb; the Flying Shuttle carries Chen Mo and Liushuang through the Iron Thorn Forest 49.
- Wasp — its focused attack leaves enemy equipment comparatively intact, making it useful for recovering magical research material 50.
Relationships
- Little White / Xiaobai — first undead summon, combat assistant, and equipment carrier. Remains with Chen Mo despite being badly injured during the escape with Liushuang 1 35 49.
- Eastern Xia — homeland and principal source of support. Receives his otherworldly discoveries while providing equipment, expert analysis, and a dedicated organization to manage contact 20 22 31.
- Morton — instructor whose initial dislike becomes respect and personal concern. Supplies remedial lessons, recovery potions, and support for enlightenment before urging Chen Mo to leave 28 29 30 34 35.
- Commandery Princess Liushuang — benefactor, trading partner, and eventual fellow fugitive. Supplies healing medicine, receives technological assistance, and escapes with him after her party’s destruction 14 36 49 50.
- Captain Peiwen — military ally who values Chen Mo’s weapons and reconnaissance. Backs his authority within the party and promises territory and educational assistance before dying to protect the survivors 39 42 46 47.
- Kajia — young centaur guide whose persistence helps Chen Mo obtain treatment. Chen Mo rewards him generously and sincerely praises his service 9 10 11.
- Old John and One-Eye — White Stone City contacts who arrange mercenary registration, equipment sales, and guides 17 18.
- Vincent — official bribed to arrange entry into Har’s preparatory mage tower through Roy’s identity 23 24 27.

- Aili — fellow preparatory apprentice who treats him as a promising prospect and shield against unwanted suitors. Her attempt to betray him ends when Little White shoots her 1 7 8.
- Little Eleven — scout who initially warns him to be careful, then attacks him after Aili’s death. Chen Mo kills him in the ensuing struggle 4 8.
- Young Master Zircon and the Zircon Family — initial persecutor and subsequent pursuers. Zircon’s death forces Chen Mo to flee; the family later seeks private vengeance 5 7 37.
