Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Karmic Retribution Body | 4 | Zhou Yang’s blade-credit transaction connects their consciousnesses and allows him to control her body. The extremely poor blade makes their connection weak and increases her likelihood of encountering danger. |

| Mindfulness: 3 personal strands | 14 | Gains one strand after surviving the midnight mirror ritual. |
| Opera Communion with Spirits | 29 30 37 | Performs with Zhou Yang against the ghosts’ encirclement. During her later initiation, her portrayal of Gongsun Yan drives back ghostly influences even before she has learned the Draft. |

| Breathing of the Ghost — Right Mindfulness Lock, fifth level recorded | 64 | Her preserved human-body record lists the fifth level after the final performance. A later Imprinting passage instead identifies the preserved technique as fourth level, without explaining the discrepancy 73. |
| Opera Lady; preserved human-body record | 64 | Following the disturbance of the Zhan, her record lists no Mindfulness or identity but retains Breathing of the Ghost and her Gate of Opening Averting God for Zhou Yang to Imprint. No cultivation rank for her Opera Lady identity is specified. |
Background / History
Life in the Lampstand Opera Troupe
Ding Ling’s parents died together. Her mother had taught her that women faced particular hardships and should hold on to someone who genuinely helped them—a lesson Ding Ling later associates with Zhou Yang 8.
As the Lampstand Opera Troupe’s cook and general hand, she performed its hardest work for the least pay and could be ordered around by any troupe member. Although she had never formally studied opera, she taught herself folk performances. Several men in the troupe desired her, but none had succeeded in taking advantage of her 5 6 12 26.
The Midnight Mirror Ritual
The troupe arrived in Daliang Village for a three-day engagement beginning on the second day of the second month. When the villagers developed Soul-Separation Sickness and ghostly incidents began, Chang Dafeng considered sacrificing Ding Ling, who was already ill with a chill, to save the others 2.
After Zhou Yang entered her body through the blade-credit connection, he helped her negotiate rather than submit as an expendable pawn. Ding Ling pressed a hairpin to her neck and threatened suicide, using the troupe’s fear of creating another resentful ghost to demand supernatural instruction. Zhou Yang subsequently forced Chang Dafeng to surrender the painting containing the Draft of Divine Makeup and Ghost Painting 6 7 8.
During the midnight hair-combing ritual, the mirror’s ghosts overwhelmed her senses and drove her personal Mindfulness below zero. Zhou Yang stayed, regained control of her body, and used an operatic curse supplied by Ding Ling while striking the mirror with a horsewhip. She broke free, and the apparent cuts on her face disappeared as the ghost’s influence faded 10 11 12.
Initiation and Escape
Ding Ling survived another ghost encounter while gathering firewood, with Zhou Yang using Breathing of the Ghost through her body to help her escape. She then prepared roe deer hide and intestines for her Gate of Opening ritual 22 23.
Chang Dafeng selected her to play Zhong Kui, despite objections that she was a woman without formal opera training. After further ghost attacks, he initiated her into creating an Averting God. She endured the sensation of ghost shadows eating her intestines and refused Zhou Yang’s offer to suffer in her place 26 29 36 37.
Chang Dafeng secretly placed a suppression curse on her Averting God and dressed her in a cumbersome Zhong Kui costume that restricted her movement. Ding Ling and Zhou Yang escaped through a high window at the fifth watch; when Chang Dafeng activated his curse, Zhou Yang erased it with Breathing of the Ghost 38 39 40.
Investigation of the Opera Ghost
After mastering Breathing of the Ghost herself, Ding Ling entered a suspicious courtyard with Zhou Yang’s guidance. They found paper figures dressed as characters associated with the Draft, then investigated a Zeng clan ancestral hall containing a spirit tablet for “Lady Ding Jiu” 41 42 43.
Zhou Yang’s connection ended just as the Opera Ghost manifested, leaving Ding Ling to face the danger without him. Her subsequent increase in Mindfulness suggested that she had escaped; later ledger records continued to show her developing abilities 44 45 49.
Her survival was subsequently confirmed. Chang Dafeng retrieved her from the Opera Ghost’s vicinity by summoning his Gate of Rest Averting God, but the escape cost him the use of his left arm: Ding Ling witnessed the being swallow the arm, chew it, and spit it back out. Chang Dafeng then kept her under the Bloated Aspect’s control 51 53.
Reunion and Preparations for the Grand Performance
At the river, Chang Dafeng showed Ding Ling that the opposite bank mirrored their own surroundings and explained that crossing would merely return her to the same place. He also admitted that he had concealed the true nature of the threat, which was neither a Puppet nor a group of Puppets 51.
When Zhou Yang returned, Ding Ling initially refused to answer him. His disappearance at the moment of greatest danger had left her feeling that her safety mattered less than his other concerns, although she also believed she had little right to demand more from someone who had repeatedly helped her. After he explained that he too had faced immediate death and had been forced to leave, her resentment gave way to concern for him and regret over her reaction 51 52.
Ding Ling informed Zhou Yang about Chang Dafeng’s Gate of Rest Averting God, connected to the real ghost called Daliao, a dead funeral worker who drained the living’s vitality. On Zhou Yang’s advice, she agreed to perform Zhong Kui Marries Off His Sister with Chang Dafeng while secretly preparing to stage Wujia Slope within it. Chang Dafeng withdrew the Bloated Aspect from her, and Zhou Yang confirmed that he had left no further suppression measures 53.
They returned to the troupe’s camp on the ridge, where Ding Ling continued cooking and learned the performance’s route. She would establish her identity as Zhong Kui onstage, meet Chang Dafeng as Zhong Mei, and lead the wedding procession toward the river bridge. Chang Dafeng supplied a straw attendant possessed by his Gate of Rest Averting God. During preparations, Zhou Yang promised to tell Ding Ling where his home was if she escaped the village alive 54.
The Wedding Procession and Rear Slaughter Gate
During the performance, Ding Ling’s Gate of Opening opened and her Averting God merged with her, making her portrayal of Zhong Kui more than a lifelike imitation. Under the Ghost Candle’s light, her imposing presence dispersed the foul blood directed at her and silenced the audience 56.
The procession encountered the Opera Ghost and the village’s dead. When a corpse seized Ding Ling’s shoulder, the straw attendant burned it with the Ghost Candle’s fire, allowing her to break free. The dead then linked together and called for “Ding Niang’er,” while the Ghost Rhyme obscured her sight and drew her toward their cries. Ding Ling recalled that the Opera Lady associated with the ruined house had been called Ding Jiu, and Zhou Yang used his Supernatural Ripple through their shared connection to tear away the surrounding darkness 57 58.
At the bridge, Chang Dafeng revealed that Ding Ling was to guard the Rear Slaughter Gate and hold back the Gate of Death. Zhou Yang blocked the Bloated Aspect with a Supernatural Ripple, but Ghost Da Le struck Ding Ling with yellow paper and spread its Ghost Rhyme through her body. She stiffened and lost the ability to speak, although she could still answer Zhou Yang through their mental connection 59.
As the ghosts fought, Chang Dafeng expressed regret over sending Ding Ling to her death and collapsed at the bridgehead. Zhou Yang interpreted his final words as an intention to help her, but no immediate action was apparent. The conflict between the ghosts gave Ding Ling only a temporary opportunity to survive 62.
Final Performance and the Debt of Love
Ding Ling washed away her Zhong Kui makeup and took the role of Wang Baochuan, while Zhou Yang used Mindfulness to make the Ghost Mouths sing Xue Pinggui’s part. Their performance moved the paper spectators to tears. As the Opera Ghost repeated the opening lines, its Ghost Rhyme returned to it and it became a paper figure; warm light broke through and its domain ended 63.
Ding Ling asked whether Wang Baochuan would reunite with Xue Pinggui, then begged Zhou Yang to tell her his full name and whereabouts. He considered the possibility that she might someday help him escape Guan Village, but could not bring himself to draw her into his danger. Instead, he told her to go without worry, leaving her to weep and recite the opera’s final lines 63.
The world then fractured around Zhou Yang, and he was expelled from Daliangzi Village. The Knife Credit Ledger announced that he had disturbed the Zhan and recorded Ding Ling’s answer that she had no regrets. Back in Guan Village, he discovered that she had become the Opera Lady and that the ledger now declared he owed her a debt of love. He understood her new role as connected to the Zhan but distinct from the Opera Ghost; the exact process of her transformation was not explained 64.
Ding Ling left him a paper garment bearing blessings she had sewn into it. She also preserved Breathing of the Ghost and her Gate of Opening Averting God in her human-body record, allowing him to continue Imprinting them despite the record’s lack of Mindfulness or identity. Zhou Yang held the paper cloak and grieved for her until daybreak 64.
Her preserved record remained available afterward. Once Zhou Yang created his own Ghost Head Averting God, he spent ten deeds of Good Karma to fully Imprint her Gate of Opening ability onto it. Although a woman’s operatic singing came from its featureless face, he detected no familiar presence within it 72 73.
Appearance
- Build: Slender, with delicate features, a pale neck, and slender hands 6 12 22.
- Hair: Long enough to comb forward over her face during the midnight mirror ritual 10.
- Hands: Despite their slender appearance, her palms are heavily callused from work, allowing her to hold a hot bowl of congee without discomfort 54.
- Ordinary clothing: Coarse clothing, including a blue coarse-cloth jacket 8 10.
- Zhong Kui costume: Red-based yuanbao face paint, a bat-winged cap, raised official’s boots, and extensive padding. The outfit makes her appear broad and imposing but severely limits ordinary movement 39.
- Final performance: After washing off her greasepaint, her slightly pale face and red opera costume make her resemble a bride about to be married 63.
Personality
Ding Ling’s delicate appearance conceals considerable courage and a willingness to resist coercion. She threatens suicide rather than quietly accept a potentially fatal ritual, answers Li Yichun’s insults without yielding, and endures the false-belly initiation despite extreme pain 6 19 37.
Her trust in Zhou Yang develops into a desire to protect him as well as receive his help. When she recognizes that he is frightened, she reassures him instead of losing confidence in him. His absences leave her feeling isolated, while his return immediately lifts her spirits 12 19 39.
She is also observant and capable of deception. She questions Chang Dafeng’s motives for killing Qian Heng, recognizes that her costume is intended to restrain her, and convincingly understates her Mindfulness when questioned. Her courage is not fearlessness: the flayed ghost encountered during breathing practice frightens her into considering abandoning the technique 32 34 35 40.
Her attachment to Zhou Yang includes romantic longing and a strong fear of abandonment. She is embarrassed when she realizes that an apparently affectionate opera passage is not a personal declaration, and she struggles to voice her hurt because she sees herself as the recipient of his kindness rather than someone entitled to his continued help. Once she learns that his departure was forced by his own danger, she immediately worries for him instead 52.
She repeatedly seeks to know his home and ultimately his full name, hoping for a connection beyond their shared-body encounters. Her final recorded response expresses no regret, and she leaves behind both a personal gift and the abilities he needs 54 63 64.
Abilities & Skills
Butchery and Cooking
Her practical skills are established before she gains supernatural abilities 6.
- Skins and dismembers a roe deer while leaving its hide almost intact 23.
- Salts meat, cleans entrails, and prepares meals for the troupe 23.
- Uses her butchery skills to prepare materials for the Gate of Opening ritual 23 36.
- Continues preparing food for herself and Chang Dafeng while they rehearse the final performance 54.
Folk Opera and Opera Communion with Spirits
Ding Ling is self-taught, but can achieve performances that bring a character’s presence into the scene 6 37.
- Supplies the operatic curse Zhou Yang uses against the mirror ghosts 11.
- Portrays Gongsun Yan with a righteous bearing that suppresses ghostly influences 37.
- Uses Zhu Yingtai’s affectionate scene from The Butterfly Lovers to steady herself and master Breathing of the Ghost 41.
- Establishes Zhong Kui’s supernatural presence during the wedding performance, merging her operatic role with her Averting God 56 57.
- Performs Wang Baochuan opposite Zhou Yang’s Xue Pinggui in their final attempt against the Opera Ghost. Zhou Yang supplies his character’s voice through the Ghost Mouths even after Ding Ling has lost ordinary speech 59 63.
Gate of Opening Averting God
Her first documented attainment in the Draft of Divine Makeup and Ghost Painting is an Averting God fixed within the Gate of Opening 38 41.
- Voice and appearance alteration: Imitates Shitou’s voice and makes Chang Dafeng perceive her as the dead boy with his broken neck 38.
- Variable appearance: Zhou Yang initially sees a figure resembling Ding Ling, while she sees a man from her dreams. Beneath its hair, Zhou Yang finds a featureless face 40.
- Support for breathing practice: Helps her use an operatic performance to control Breathing of the Ghost 41.
- Initial Imprinting restriction: Zhou Yang initially cannot imprint her Gate of Opening ability because his Gate has not manifested and he lacks the necessary foundation 50.
- Operatic manifestation: Merges with her during her portrayal of Zhong Kui. Strengthened by the Ghost Candle, it supports a commanding divine bearing and an operatic rebuke against the attacking dead 56 57.
- Preservation and later Imprinting: Remains available in her human-body record after she becomes the Opera Lady. Once Zhou Yang establishes his own Ghost Head Averting God, he fully Imprints her ability with ten deeds of Good Karma 64 72 73.
Breathing of the Ghost
Zhou Yang initially operates this technique through Ding Ling’s body; she does not personally master it until overcoming the flayed ghost’s influence 39 40 41.
- Opens Ghost Mouths in her skin to channel ghostly breath 22 39.
- Clears hostile ghostly aura when Zhou Yang uses it through her palms 27.
- Provides enough strength and agility to climb walls despite the heavy Zhong Kui costume 39 42.
- Reaches the fourth layer of Right Mindfulness Lock in her later ledger record 49.
- Becomes the source of Zhou Yang’s first Breathing of the Ghost Imprinting. His expenditure of three deeds of Good Karma contributes to his acquisition of Supernatural Ripple; this does not establish that Ding Ling independently possesses that derived ability 49 50.
- Is preserved as fifth-level Right Mindfulness Lock in the human-body record shown after her transformation. The later Imprinting passage calls it fourth level, leaving the recorded proficiency inconsistent 64 73.
Shared Consciousness
Her Karmic Retribution Body connection allows direct mental cooperation with Zhou Yang 4 6.
- Communicates with him internally and shares her senses with him 6 42.
- Allows him to take control of her body, including during supernatural attacks 6 11.
- Makes her abilities available for his Imprinting; the poor-quality blade limits each unit of Good Karma to one-tenth of her original proficiency 14 49.
- Does not ensure his continuous presence: disturbances in Guan Village can pull him away from her 12 13.
- Remains usable for internal communication after Ghost Da Le’s attack prevents her from speaking aloud 59.
- Allows Zhou Yang to deploy his Supernatural Ripple around her during the procession through the dead villagers 57 58.
- Fails to carry Zhou Yang’s final replies to her when the disturbance of the Zhan expels him from Daliangzi Village 64.
Preserved Legacy
After Ding Ling becomes the Opera Lady, her ledger entry retains Breathing of the Ghost and her Gate of Opening Averting God despite listing neither Mindfulness nor identity. Zhou Yang understands this as a deliberate preservation of the two abilities he most needs, apparently prepared with knowledge of his capacity to Imprint them 64.
The preserved abilities do not demonstrate that her consciousness survives within an Imprinted Averting God. After fully Imprinting her Gate of Opening ability, Zhou Yang hears operatic singing but senses no familiar presence in his Ghost Head Averting God 73.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Divine painting: Carries the Draft of Divine Makeup and Ghost Painting; obtained from Chang Dafeng through Zhou Yang’s intervention 8 9.
- Route map: Initiation gift from Chang Dafeng marking dangerous places 32.
- Zhong Kui costume: Supports her assigned operatic identity but also serves Chang Dafeng’s attempt to keep her from escaping 34 39.
- False belly and intestines: Ritual materials prepared from roe deer remains and used to attract ghost shadows during her initiation 23 36 37.
- Temporary weapons: Uses or carries a woodcutter’s knife, horsewhip, ornate spear, and Chang Dafeng’s dagger at different points 11 19 30 36.
- Folding fan: Uses a fan painted with large peonies as part of her Zhong Kui performance 56.
- Paper garment / cloak: Leaves this garment to Zhou Yang after becoming the Opera Lady. It bears blessings she sewed into it, and he holds it while grieving for her until daybreak 64.
Relationships
- Zhou Yang — Benefactor, shared-body partner, and supernatural instructor. Their cooperation becomes reciprocal trust; she promises to protect him, while he refuses to teach her a control mechanism that would place her life entirely in his hands 8 12 40. Her feelings develop into romantic longing, complicated by the hurt caused by his abrupt disappearance. They reconcile when he explains that his own life was at stake 51 52. She repeatedly asks for his home and full name, and their last performance pairs them as Wang Baochuan and Xue Pinggui. After her transformation, the ledger records his debt of love to her, while he mourns her and continues benefiting from her preserved abilities 54 63 64 73.
- Chang Dafeng — Troupe leader and eventual master. He teaches her genuine techniques but repeatedly treats her as expendable and attempts to control her through a curse 2 36 38 40. He later rescues and recaptures her at the cost of his arm, releases her from the Bloated Aspect to secure her cooperation, then reveals that she is intended to guard the Rear Slaughter Gate. Before collapsing, he voices regret over sending her to her death 51 53 59 62.
- Li Yichun — Fellow troupe member with whom she frequently quarrels. He seeks information about her new technique, and Zhou Yang warns her that he would endanger others to save himself 19 21. His lingering shadow, together with Qian Heng’s, becomes material for her initiation 36.
- Qian Heng — Fellow troupe member who objects to her playing Zhong Kui. His lingering shadow later becomes material in her initiation ritual 26 36.
- Gao Hongbo — Fellow troupe member who tries to question her about Opera Communion with Spirits and becomes cold when she does not share it 19.
- Opera Ghost — Principal supernatural threat in Daliangzi Village. It influences Ding Ling through opera, confronts her during the investigation and wedding procession, and is finally overcome by her performance with Zhou Yang. Her later identity as the Opera Lady is not treated as identical to this ghost 27 44 57 63 64.
- Gate of Rest Averting God / Ghost Da Le — Chang Dafeng’s dangerous supernatural attendant. Its lantern burns the corpse gripping Ding Ling during the procession, but it later attacks her with yellow paper and leaves her unable to speak 57 59.
- Parents — Both deceased. Her mother’s advice shapes how she understands Zhou Yang’s arrival in her life 8.
