Background / History
Family life and the decision to cultivate
Tang Tiandong grew up in Dangwu Village as a son of Tang Yuan and Miao. Before learning cultivation, he attributed his father’s successful, injury-free hunting to luck and ability, dismissing Tang Tianzi’s suspicions about it 25.
He became increasingly concerned about threats to the household. When Tang Tiansong wanted to marry Yu Wei rather than honor his engagement to the Ye Household, Tiandong warned that their family could not yet afford to offend the Ye lineage. He understood that the siblings would largely have to solve their own difficulties because Tang Yuan deliberately limited his interference in their lives 53.
Tiandong joined his three older siblings in choosing cultivation to protect their household and Dangwu Village from rival lineages and the Western Rong. After receiving resources left by Tang Yuan, he questioned why their cousin Tang Miao had been given a higher-grade Qi Refinement method. He accepted Tang Tiansong’s instruction to follow their father’s arrangements and not seek to borrow Tang Miao’s method 56.
Carefree Cave and the demon rat
Following Tang Yuan’s hint, Tang Tianlan and Tiandong discovered a spirit-spring cave behind Dangwu Village. Tiandong named it Carefree Cave and later had two additional side chambers excavated so that three people could cultivate there simultaneously 61 67.
When Tang Tianya foresaw Tang Tiansong being pursued by a demon rat, Tiandong and Tang Tianzi rushed to the coal mine. Tiandong subsequently charged the rat while carrying the Mystic Spoon; the spoon killed it with a single attack. The siblings then obtained Hou Fei’s help to clear Demon Beasts from the coal and copper mines 63 64.
Tiandong also rescued an injured white short-tailed cat from the mine. Believing it would soon die, he proposed killing it for its beast core, but Tang Tianzi refused and brought it home. The animal later accompanied the family’s Demon Beast hunts as a white lynx 64 65 69.
Household development and market dealings
Over the following years, Tiandong joined hunts in Three Graves Mountain and cultivated in Carefree Cave. He warned Tang Tiansong that excessive pill use and forcibly absorbing Spiritual Qi could damage his prospects of Foundation Establishment. He also proposed increasing coal and copper production, an approach Tiansong rejected because overworking the villagers could undermine their support 69 71 75.
On his first visit to Purple Moon Lake Market, Tiandong traveled with Tang Tianya and Cui Xueyong, sold beast cores for twenty-eight Spirit Stones, and studied prices. Tong Lingling intervened when a stallholder falsely accused Tianya of damaging dragon egg fossils. Tiandong subsequently bought seven Spirit Stones’ worth of fossils from the same stall 73 74.
He later represented the family at Gathering Friends Market to collect gifts for Tiansong’s engagement banquet. Despite ridicule over the Tang Household’s poverty, he remained at his post. Gifts from the Long and Tong households encouraged other lineages to contribute, bringing his recorded collection to seventy-four Spirit Stones from thirty-two households before further gifts arrived 87 90 92.
Marriage negotiations
The Tong Household proposed marrying Tong Lingling to Tiandong at Tang Tiansong’s engagement banquet. Tiandong initially welcomed both Lingling herself and the protection a marriage alliance could provide. However, after Long Zhiyu urged him to ask Lingling to remove her mask, he recoiled at her severely disfigured face 93.
Lingling explained that Nether Bone Poison had caused her condition. When Tiandong failed to provide his birth information, she gave him until the sixth day of the eighth month to submit it or dissolve their engagement 94.
Tiandong then considered marrying into the Long Household. He admitted that he liked Long Zhiyu personally as well as valuing the security her household could offer. Tang Tiansong advised him to treat marriage as a lifelong decision and consult their parents 96. By the time of Tiansong’s death, Long Zhiyu had already sent Tiandong her engagement note 100.
Succession and revenge
After news arrived that Tang Tiansong had been killed, Miao named Tiandong head of the household. Overwhelmed by grief, he initially blamed himself for not securing the Tong marriage alliance. He argued for a cautious, long-term response to the killers, but ultimately agreed with Tang Tianzi to go to Iron Bridge Village that night 100.
Before leaving, he summoned Tang Tianlan by letter and appointed Tang Tianya acting head, charging him with protecting their mother and youngest brother. Tiandong and Tianzi continued toward Iron Bridge Village while Cui Xueyong sought reinforcements 101.
During the retaliation, Tiandong entered the hall demanding the lives of his brother’s killers. He later personally killed more than a hundred members of the Ye Household, young and old, by piercing their hearts. He defended the massacre as the fate the Tang Household might itself have suffered had the siblings failed 102 103.
Tiandong agreed in principle that selling Iron Bridge Village to the Cui Household was preferable to trying to rule its hostile population. He also rejected Tang Jincan’s attempt to blame Tang Miao for Tiansong’s death, citing Miao’s longstanding loyalty to the family 103.
Securing the household
After returning Tiansong’s body home, Tiandong traveled to Divine Dragon Island seeking a marriage alliance with Long Zhiyu. Her clan elder opposed it, and an ordinary alliance was also rejected because the weakened Tang Household could offer little assistance in return 104.
Tiandong instead offered two spirit swords to hire the Long Household’s dragons. After spending seven days sightseeing with Long Zhiyu while acting as her husband, he secured three years of irregular dragon guard duty and emergency reinforcements for Dangwu Village 105.
He organized Tiansong’s funeral and mobilized more than a thousand lineage members to build the family graveyard. At his own request, a grave was also dug for him below his brother’s. Although initially angered by Yu Wei’s red funeral clothing, he ultimately honored her decision to be buried with Tiansong 105 106.
Before departing with the Mystic Spoon, Tang Yuan told Tiandong where to seek him if the household encountered a crisis it could not resolve 107.
Leadership by 4053
By 4053, Tiandong was married to Tong Lingling and had three children. Under his leadership, the Tang Household governed approximately eighty thousand mortals and included more than fifty cultivators, placing it among the fifteen strongest cultivation lineages around Gazing Dragon Lake 118.
The household had devoted substantial resources to Tang Tianya’s development. When Tianya returned at Qi Refinement Sixth Layer and discussed preparing for the Spirit Sunflower Secret Realm, Tiandong assured him that the family was strong enough for him to concentrate on cultivation 118.
Personality
Tiandong combines concern for family security with bluntness and impatience. He quickly recognizes dangerous political imbalances, but can respond harshly to perceived threats: he repeatedly sought permission to kill Tang Jincan for spying on the household and mistreating his brothers. He nevertheless accepted Tang Tiansong’s authority when overruled 53 55 56 57.
He is willing to learn from others and recognizes how much his cultivation owes to his father’s preparations. He listened closely to the younger Yang Musheng’s insights and privately acknowledged that without Tang Yuan’s help, he would not even have qualified to cultivate 87 88.
His conduct after Tiansong’s death reveals both hesitation and ruthlessness. Initially uncertain how to lead, he sought a prudent response before committing to revenge. Once committed, he personally massacred the Ye Household and justified it as necessary to protect his own lineage 100 103.
