With the air conditioning on, Ren Suo finished his takeout snail noodles in the cool living room, then grabbed a bottle of chilled orange drink with pulp from the fridge. He felt so good, it was as if pleasure ran from his toes all the way to his tongue.
Full and satisfied, Ren Suo lay down on the sofa and continued tackling this "Killer" game.
After the first mission failure, the game automatically rewound to when he was in the alley. It seemed to have an autosave function.
He found that the game had an excellent degree of freedom. It was neither the "I may give you freedom, but you have to do it this way" kind, nor the "I won't teach you anything, so figure it the hell out yourself" kind. Rather, whenever the character Ren Suo controlled acted, the surrounding NPCs immediately reacted, giving him instant feedback.
After Ren Suo had accidentally used the Killer to take out a security guard earlier, he tried the other three options to enter Black Briar Building from the front. As it turned out, with option ①, "I forgot my invitation at home," the attendant would immediately bring out a photo roster and ask the Killer for his name. The attendant would then find the guest and conduct facial recognition verification.
As for option ③, "(Attack him) Why should I report my actions to you?" there was no need to say more. The moment the Killer snapped the attendant's neck, he was riddled with bullets from over a dozen guns mere seconds later.
Option ④, "(Take out 5 pounds) Younger Male Cousin, long time no see..." left Ren Suo both amused and exasperated. After taking the money, the attendant immediately stepped back and shouted, "There's a suspicious person here!" Then two burly security guards came over and hauled the Killer away.
At first glance, none of these four options worked. But in option ①, if Ren Suo could learn a guest's appearance, perhaps he could use Clown Assassin's Myriad Transformations skill to sneak inside.
Option ③ was clearly not the right choice for this scenario at all.
As for option ④, Ren Suo suspected the issue was that the money was insufficient. But the Killer only had 5 pounds on him, so there was nothing he could do.
He had also tried going around to enter from the back of the building. However, there were men in black standing guard at the emergency passage, and every one of them had a gun. The moment a stranger approached, they would aim their weapons at him. The Killer could take down one at most before being shot to pieces.
Still, after several attempts, Ren Suo had vaguely found a proper infiltration method. This time, he chose option ② again. After being rejected by the attendant, he stepped forward, and the two burly guards once more dragged him into the alley.
Once Ren Suo judged that they had walked far enough for the people outside to be completely unable to see into the alley, he struck without hesitation, having the Killer snap one guard's neck!
The other guard tried to retreat and sound the alarm, but the Killer immediately rushed forward, seized his throat, pulled out the baton on his body, and knocked him unconscious with a single blow.
God knew how Ren Suo had only pressed the attack button once, yet the Killer had performed so many moves.
After dealing with the two of them, the Killer changed into one guard's uniform. Once he was fully dressed, the game displayed a prompt:
"Do you wish to disguise yourself as Black Thorns security personnel?"
After confirming, Ren Suo watched the Killer put on the guard's ID badge, pack away his own suit inside the security uniform, then smear mud from the ground across his face. He openly walked out of the alley and headed toward the building.
The Killer walked straight toward the building. When the attendant saw him, he asked, "Where's Terry?"
"Him? He went to take a leak, so I came back first..." Before the Killer could finish, the attendant took two steps back and shouted, "You're not Dennis! Dennis doesn't sound like that—there's a suspicious person here!"
The entrance instantly descended into chaos. Then the gun-toting men in black appeared again, and the screen lost all color...
This time, Ren Suo still chose to kill one and knock out the other. But instead of heading to the building's main entrance, he had the Killer change direction and circle around the side of the building. Taking advantage of the fierce wind and heavy rain, he smashed through a window with one punch and climbed into the first floor.
He then headed toward the emergency passage. Three men in black chatting inside looked at him. Seeing that he was security personnel, they frowned and asked, "What do you want?"
"I ran into some lunatic earlier. Got me filthy all over." The Killer shrugged. The mud on his face looked even filthier beneath the white lights. "I'm going upstairs to change."
The men in black exchanged glances. Finding nothing suspicious, they let the Killer pass.
"Ha!" Ren Suo clenched his fist in celebration. "Just as I thought, the men in black and the security guards aren't part of the same system!"
The attendant and the guards probably knew each other, which was why, even after the Killer disguised himself, the attendant could still expose him from the difference in his voice.
However, these men in black were obviously much better "equipped" than the guards. It now seemed they belonged to two separate systems. The attendant and the security personnel were employees of Black Briar Building, while the men in black were security staff temporarily stationed in the building for tonight's banquet.
He ran all the way to the ninth floor. There were also three men in black at the stairwell entrance. After the Killer bluffed his way past them using the same excuse, Ren Suo immediately controlled him into the ninth-floor corridor. Out of sight of others, he removed the soaked security uniform, changed back into his own suit, and openly passed through the banquet entrance into the dazzling Banquet Hall.
"You have entered the Lampeluki Banquet. Your identity is 'an unknown stranger.' Save file 1 has been created."
The game displayed another prompt:
"Before 20:00, find a lethal weapon at the banquet and mark any suspicious individuals."
What? What? What? Were this game's missions really this open-ended?
Ren Suo checked the game time. It was 19:48. He knew that game time passed at a 1:1 rate with real-world time, so he had ten minutes left to find a weapon and mark suspicious people.
But what weapons could there possibly be at a banquet?
Ren Suo controlled the Killer as he wandered around the banquet. At a table offering forks and knives, he picked up a dinner knife and a fork:
"Dinner knife. Low damage. Can be thrown." "Silver fork. Low damage. Can be thrown."
Those could hardly be considered "lethal" weapons...
As Ren Suo boredly had the Killer wander around, he accidentally bumped head-on into an NPC.
The Killer had accidentally bumped into a noblewoman earlier as well. She had cried out, spilling the wine in her glass, and the Killer had kept backing away while saying "sorry," "sorry." Ren Suo had therefore been very careful while controlling the Killer's movements.
Based on Ren Suo's experience, an NPC who got bumped would at most cry out before being pushed aside. Yet just before this NPC was hit, he suddenly shifted his body a great distance and deftly avoided the Killer.
At that moment, a string of messages popped up in the lower-left corner of the game:
"Gun Mastery activated. You have discovered the automatic pistol 'P19C.'" "P19C's location has been marked." "You have discovered a suspicious individual. The suspicious individual's location has been marked."
Ren Suo watched the man glowing yellow all over, with a red handgun-shaped glow at his waist, swaggering around the banquet. Only then did he understand that "find a weapon" and "find suspicious individuals" were actually the same mission—
The suspicious individual had the weapon he needed on him!
