"What? Only 66.5%?"
Ren Suo stared blankly. He thought he had played pretty well, killing everyone he was supposed to kill. How had he only barely passed?
There was a question mark beside the mission evaluation. When he checked it, the scoring criteria appeared:
"Completed basic mission objective—60 points;"
"Killed a moderate number of enemies—5 points;"
"Saved a small number of innocents—1 - 0.5 = 0.5 points;"
"Special Achievement: Lolicon—1 point (this score only applies when the total evaluation is below 80 points);"
"Total score: 66.5 points. Evaluation: Barely passed."
Ren Suo rubbed his chin. Does this game have a lot of scoring criteria? Still, the game had an extremely high degree of freedom. There were indeed many details he could have optimized while playing. Now that he could see the score breakdown, he had already found one way to earn more points.
"More importantly, what the hell is this Lolicon achievement..."
He ordered more takeout and lay back on the sofa to continue battling through the game. Ren Suo found the game quite good. It had plenty of freedom, and the enemy AI was reasonable—not brain-dead like cardboard cutouts, nor difficult like Terminators. They reacted to the player's actions, and even differed individually. For example, Ren Suo had seen several assassins become so frightened that they ran away.
Selecting Save File 0, Ren Suo had the Killer start over from the alley. Familiar with the routine now, he lured out the two guards, but this time, instead of killing one of them, he knocked them both unconscious.
He then followed the process step by step. This time, when he entered the Banquet Hall, the game created a new Save File 2 for him.
This time, Ren Suo paid close attention to the Killer's shooting. The last time he attacked in the Banquet Hall, he had not paid much attention to the fleeing guests. He had even accidentally shot several of them while trying to finish the fight quickly.
When the British gentleman came out of the Inner Hall, there were still thirteen living guests in the Banquet Hall.
At that moment, the takeout arrived. Only then did Ren Suo realize that the game did not have a pause option, so he hurried to collect it. The takeout bag seemed to be leaking a little. The deliveryman apologized repeatedly, but Ren Suo did not mind. He quickly brought it into the kitchen, only to accidentally flip open the lid when taking it out. Sauce splashed all over his hands, leaving them greasy and sticky.
When he came back after washing his hands, he saw the British gentleman and the other men in black nervously pointing their guns at the Killer. "Why aren't you leaving?"
Ren Suo hurriedly controlled the Killer out of the Banquet Hall. However, because of the delay, the Ninth Floor exploded just after the Killer left the hall. The game immediately displayed a prompt:
"Kallen Lamperouge has died. Mission failed."
Fine, he would do it again. This time, nothing unexpected happened, and the number of surviving guests in the Banquet Hall rose to fifteen.
When the game evaluated the mission, it was no surprise to Ren Suo that he received a 71% rating!
"Completed basic mission objective—60 points;"
"Killed a moderate number of enemies—5 points;"
"Saved a moderate number of innocents—5 points;"
"Special Achievement: Lolicon—1 point (this score only applies when the total evaluation is below 80 points);"
"Total score: 71 points. Evaluation: Fairly excellent."
"Not excellent, but fairly excellent...?" Ren Suo twitched his lips. "There shouldn't be anything else I can optimize, right?"
At that moment, the game displayed a prompt: "Because the player has received a fairly excellent evaluation and met a hidden requirement, hidden side mission information for this chapter will be unlocked."
"Side Mission: Protect Yuffie Lamperouge. The less damage the target suffers, the higher the score received."
Yuffie Lamperouge?
The person protected in the main mission was Kallen Lamperouge. They were probably members of the same family, right? And this banquet was hosted by the Lamperouge Family, so Kallen and Yuffie were very likely together.
If the player needed to protect her, that meant Yuffie would definitely die without player intervention.
Although Ren Suo had not seen Kallen Lamperouge so far, he could easily deduce that they had to be in the Inner Hall of the Banquet Hall—the British gentleman NPC had come out from there, and the Ninth Floor was not large. Other than the Banquet Hall, there was only the Inner Hall.
But when did Yuffie die?
Ren Suo immediately thought of a crucial time—20:00. Once that time arrived, gunshots would ring out in the Inner Hall, while the assassins in the Banquet Hall would launch their attack at the same time, striking from inside and out to assassinate the guests.
If Yuffie really was in the Inner Hall rather than the Banquet Hall, then she was very likely killed during the gunfight at 20:00.
After finishing his takeout, Ren Suo lay back on the sofa and turned on the Little World Game Console. He loaded Save File 2 and had the Killer scan the Banquet Hall, but aside from a dozen or so assassins radiating crimson-black light, he saw no other markers.
So how was he supposed to find Yuffie Lamperouge?
After thinking for a moment, Ren Suo had the Killer steal a handgun and head straight for the Inner Hall. However, in the passage between the Banquet Hall and the Inner Hall, a middle-aged butler and two men in black stopped Ren Suo.
"Sir, the inside is a private area," the middle-aged butler said apologetically. "You have not been granted permission to enter."
At that moment, the game displayed four options:
① "I am here to find Kallen Lamperouge."
② "I am here to find Yuffie Lamperouge."
③ "Then how can I get in?"
④ (Attack) "Eat Shit!"
Ren Suo chose option ②. The middle-aged butler looked at the Killer, and a faint smile appeared in his eyes. "Miss Yuffie will give a speech at 20:00. Please wait patiently until then."
The options did not disappear. Only option ② turned gray. Ren Suo then selected option ③, and the middle-aged butler said, "I'm sorry, but only partners of the Lamperouge Family are qualified to enter... Ah, now that I think about it, I don't believe there were any Asians invited to this banquet. Or are you...?"
Ren Suo inwardly cursed, but at that moment, a young man happened to approach the Inner Hall. The butler immediately turned to him. "Sir, you are...?"
"I'm Anger Riccar, here on behalf of my Father to celebrate Miss Karen's birthday." Anger smiled faintly. "My clothes got dirty earlier, so I changed into another set nearby. I arrived late. My sincerest apologies."
Only then did Ren Suo learn the actual reason this banquet was being held.
"Ah, Young Master Anger of the Riccar family. It is an honor to meet you for the first time." The middle-aged butler stepped aside. "Please enter."
Ren Suo took a look and realized that unless he used force, he probably could not get in.
But after thinking about it, Yuffie's death should occur within the minute before 20:00. If he had the Killer rush in during that window, he might be able to save her. So Ren Suo waited patiently. When it was 19:59, he had the Killer attack the men in black and the middle-aged butler guarding the passage!
Ren Suo succeeded—against three unprepared people, the Killer, who had mastered hand-to-hand combat, made short work of them.
But he also failed—upon seeing the Killer attack the men in black in the passage, the hidden assassins hesitated for two or three seconds before suddenly drawing their guns and launching their ambush early!
The men in black immediately assumed the Killer was with the assassins. Two more men in black emerged from the passage and opened fire on him. Ren Suo immediately activated Bullet Time and exchanged fire with them, when the assassins behind him shouted:
"He's not one of us!"
Whoosh, whoosh, whoosh. The Killer was shot dead by bullets from behind.
"You died."
At the loading screen, Ren Suo calmed down and realized that forcing his way in was not viable, at least not for the Killer he was controlling.
If it had been the Clown Assassin, Ren Suo might have been able to disguise himself as the British gentleman he had seen before. But the Bald Killer only excelled at combat. He needed to find a more clever approach.
So Ren Suo loaded Save File 0 and started over from the alley once again. This time, instead of having the Killer go directly to the building, he had him stand by the road outside and patiently wait for his target.
"Hm?"
Ren Suo froze slightly. He saw a figure approaching from afar, with a bright blue nail floating above his head. His body also emitted blue light like a breathing LED, practically screaming for Ren Suo to look at him.
And this person was exactly the target in Ren Suo's plan—Anger Riccar, whom he had seen in the previous run.
"This NPC didn't have this kind of marker in the game just now..." Ren Suo found it somewhat strange. "Why did the game automatically mark him the moment I decided to go after him...?"
Ren Suo did not think much of it. He had the Killer approach him. He had originally intended to subdue Anger directly, but dialogue options appeared instead:
① "Mr. Riccar, I am a butler of the Lamperouge Family. Your clothes seem to be dirty. Please come with me and change into a clean set."
② (Attack) "I built this road, I planted this tree. If you want to pass through here, leave behind your toll money!"
Ren Suo was slightly stunned, then immediately chose option ①. Anger smiled. "Ah, that would be troublesome... You know that I'm Anger Riccar?"
The Killer smiled faintly. "As a butler of the Lamperouge Family, I naturally have to memorize information about every guest."
This was too fun!
Ren Suo stood up at once. He was now certain that this game possessed a function that remembered storylines already experienced—otherwise, there was no way to explain why Anger was automatically marked, or why the Killer knew that Anger's clothes were dirty and knew his surname.
"How did they implement a feature like this? Are programmers this good now?" Ren Suo was overjoyed. He had the Killer lead Anger somewhere secluded, immediately knock him unconscious, take Anger's identification and invitation, and swagger toward the Black Briar Building.
This time, the attendant immediately smiled and led him to the elevator. When the Killer reached the Banquet Hall again, the prompt displayed by the game was completely different—
"You have entered the Lampeluki Banquet under the identity of 'Anger Riccar.' Save File 3 created."
"Before 20:00, find a lethal weapon at the banquet and mark suspicious individuals."
Ren Suo then controlled the Killer into the Inner Hall. Naturally, the Killer identified himself to the middle-aged butler as Anger Riccar. As for why Ricard had an Asian son, the middle-aged butler merely curled his lips into a subtle smile and raised no questions.
The Killer passed through smoothly and entered the Inner Hall!
The game displayed another prompt, and even the mission changed:
"You have entered the second hall on the Ninth Floor of the Black Briar Building. Save File 4 created."
"Please protect Kallen Lamperouge."
The Inner Hall was not much different from the Banquet Hall, but there were far fewer people, and everyone was sitting on sofas chatting. At the center of the crowd, Ren Suo finally saw the mission targets he needed to protect—
A tall young woman in a white fitted gown, with long orange-red hair, and an adorable little girl with fiery red hair clutching a teddy bear. Nearby, the British gentleman Ren Suo recognized stood waiting at their side.
Golden inverted pyramid markers floated over both their heads, indicating that they were the people the player needed to protect.
Ren Suo controlled the Assassin to step forward. As the Assassin approached the crowd surrounding the two of them, he said, "Miss Karen, your beauty makes even radiance pale in comparison."
The little girl tightly clutched the tall young woman's skirt and looked timidly at the Assassin. The tall young woman smiled. "Thank you for complimenting my younger sister, but she seems to prefer words like 'cute.'"
Huh? Ren Suo froze and looked at the little girl behind the tall young woman.
Wait, Kallen Lamperouge was actually a little girl?
At that moment, Ren Suo suddenly remembered the "Special Achievement: Lolicon" listed in the previous mission evaluations.
He also remembered the strange expressions of the men in black when the Assassin claimed he had come because he admired Miss Karen.
"This game really gets me..."
